As a storage profesional with over 20 years of experienced I was intrigued by this product. I needed fast external storage and my MacBook Pro has the TB port.

I wondered if the some of the pitfalls from other reviewers were true. Since my job requires finding the truth I did some digging and research found some answers that lead me to purchase the RS5212. Three importants questions needed to be answered.

First, was the RS5212 truely a ThunderBolt(TB) device? The answer is yes. The TB logo means the product is certified by Intel and Apple. Intel and Apple approves the product before it can get that TB seal of approval.

Second, I will definetly purchase other TB products in the future but would a single TB connection on the RS5212 be a deal breaker. Turns out that is the way the product is designed, can't really fault it here besides I am looking into getting a TB hub or dock to add more devices.

Third, what type of performance should I expect from the RS5212. Could a TB throughput be slower than USB 3.0? That would be unusal, according to my math, 10Gb/s TB beats USB 3.0 5Gb/s, thats based on the specification. Both I had to see and test for myself. Regardless of the device I was benchmarking (SSD or HDD) the TB connection does have higher performance than USB 3.0

For any user looking for fast external storage you should get the RS5212, easy to intall and easy to setup.

If you've got USB 3 and HDD, I think a Newer Voyager is a better investment for $37. This unit is manly for use with SSDs.

      Problems, in order of importance:

#1: the circuitry in the unit gets very hot and this transfers to the drive making it hot to the touch. This is the first dock I've ever used that heats up the drive just from being inserted.

#2: when your unmount your HDD from the desktop, the drive doesn't spin down.

#3: no Thunderbolt cable is included (an extra $30-$40)

#4: there is only one TB port, so you can't daisy chain the unit

#5: there is no ON/OFF switch

#6: Out of the box, using a Western Digital WD20ERFX Blackmagic Disk Speed Test reports slower performance than the Voyager Dock (the difference is negligible using HDD but it is slower).

As an overall solution, I can't recommend it unless you are using SSD's to take advantage of the Thunderbolt speeds.

Comments about HighPoint RocketStor RS5212 Thunderbolt Storage Dock:

In a word - it works! We received the drive bay, connected it with the B&H Thunderbolt cable, plugged in a WD black drive and had 90MB/s write and 100MB/s read according to Blackmagic speed test on a 2011 vintage iMac. It was nice that the drives came up instantly. We connected power, the thunderbolt cable and stuck a drive in. OS 10.9 recognized it instantly. It blows away the eSATA Sonnet 5-bay drive connected through a P34 to Thunderbolt system. That thing barely runs at 28MB/s. My USB3 WD Passports give me 48MB/s. I wish the case were more sound and that it covered more of the drive. It really looks like it was built for SSD based on the form factor. This isn't something I'd use in a tough field environment but at the desk, it's not too bad. The price is right, far below that of other way overpriced enclosures. Really should a 5-bay drive cost 6 bills? No, it should be priced at what this unit costs.Drive arrays are massively overpriced compared to all other electronics. But price for delivery, I'm happy we bought this. Once more reasonably priced arrays come up, we'll supplant this one but until then, it's working fine so far.

Great dock to transfer your SS Drives via thunderbolt. Works with our samsung 512 SSD's. Wish the case was made of something other then plastic, but it works well for what it is - price was a little steam for a dock, but it is the only one on the market at the time of purchase at the lowest price.

Comments about HighPoint RocketStor RS5212 Thunderbolt Storage Dock:

This dock has far surpassed our expectations, we have used them for the last year and they have performed at a high level, handling our onsite solid state drives through to our 4TB seagate working drives. It has transformed our travel workflow meaning we can take less gear. More recently I used this dock with my laptop on a Red Dragon 6K project and again it performed as I expected a thunderbolt dock should. Excellent. The only downside is the lack of a built in fan for the longer periods of use.

I use this for video editing with Premiere Pro CC. Currently, this dock is the cheapest way to transition from the Firewire 800 interface to Thunderbolt 1. Construction is good enough, a very simple design. One fairly cheap choice made by the designers is that they didn't bother to include a power button, which means I usually unplug this after ejecting the disk, to let it sit overnight (otherwise it will be spinning the HD all night, even when not in use). Also, it can get really hot, you might want to point a fan at it. At a third of the price of a robust, 4-bay enclosure like the Promise Pegasus line, you get what you pay for.

Great for restoring system images to new drives in minutes, performing data recoveries or cloning drives. I do not like the light on the front which looks like a button and probably should be a power button but doesn't function as such. I would prefer the dock to have a second thunderbolt port to extend the chain further, but unfortunately this dock terminates the chain. It does function well, though my MacBook Pro had trouble recognising the dock and required several resets of the Parameter RAM (CMD+OPT+P+R) keys on startup before it functioned properly - this is not a problem of the dock, but a helpful tip for others experiencing issues with connections.

I purchased this product as part of a home backup solution, to work with a Mac Mini backup server. It worked great – no software or special configuration needed. Just plug in the hard drives, plugin in the power, then plug it into the Mac's Thunderbolt port. Suddenly I've got 8TB (2 4TB Hard drive – not included) of reliable high-speed storage. A few things to note with this product: 1) The hard drives plug into the top of the unit – like pieces of bread in an old-fashioned toaster – and about half of the bare drive is exposed. This wasn't completely obvious to me from the product's picture. 2) There's only one thunderbolt port – so you can't daisy chain multiple RocketStores together without a Thunderbolt hub. 3) Thunderbolt cable sold separately.

The ordering process at B&H went smooth, I received a tracking number and my order was delivered on time. Overall an A+ online shopping experience!

If you're running any Mac computer with Thunderbolt drive, this is a great investment. For the price of this storage dock and bare drives, you'll save quite a bit vs stacking up on separate external drives which usually run an average of $- for 1TB (YMMV).It's fast. I have a bunch of 3TB internal drives I buy online for about $.. so this thing is perfect for saving/archiving stuff and its fast enough to run FCP with work and project files on a caddy drive.

It's great to have a flexible dock with a Thunderbolt interface. It works. It's a little pricey, otherwise would be 5 stars.

I purchased this along with the new OWC dual elite thunderbolt enclosure and the RocketStor won out- Easily! And it was the cheaper option which made it even better.
The unit is dead quiet, super easy to use and incredibly simple to swap in and out drives! I read another review that said the unit got super hot to the touch, but after using it for a solid month I haven't had it get remotely hot. Abosultely love this product and wish I would have purchased it months ago!

It's fast. I use it a lot and have had no issues.

                                I have three complaints:

                                1) It needs a power switch. I don't like hot swapping drives with the power running. I haven't had any issues, but it's asking for trouble.

                                2) There needs to be two thunderbolt ports on future versions.

                                3) It's very cheap plastic. I think they could spend a bit of time thinking how to make something more sturdy.

                                Otherwise, it works very well.

Plugged this in to my thunderbolt equipped macbook pro and inserted a SSD that we use to record video on a Blackmagic Hyperdeck. It transferred a 3GB file in seconds. It's such a huge upgrade from the similar USB2 dock we were using!

Rather than opening up my iMac to install an additional SSD startup disc inside with a kit I opted to use this. It works great, so much faster than the internal HD. Second one, the original HD failed all to quickly out of warranty. Plus, I still have an additional slot to access any of the old drives.

Works as expected. Fast. You can have dual hard drives mounted. Unmount either with no problems. Copy from one hard drive to the other in the dock. Just makes thing so easy. And not having to buy external boxes all the time is even better.

To Summarize: This thing is awesome! Well worth the money depending on your needs/wants
***I have only had it for about a week so I can't speak at all to durability or how long it will last... It's plastic but it doesn't feel too flimsy. Pray for Mojo ;)

My situation was that I have a MBP with a 256gb ssd and I use it for work and personal and music production. So with Windows, programs, music etc it was filling up quick and I wanted something dedicated for music. Def didn't want to buy a new computer so I decided to buy this Thunderbolt hard drive bay and a used 512gb ssd from an auction website. My intention was to install mac osx and all my music production stuff on the new old drive and when I come home I can boot the MBP from the drive connected via this rocketstor interface and run everything from there. My concerns about speed were instantly abated once I hooked it up and tried it. Installed OSX 10.8.5 in like 9 minutes and it boots just as fast as if it was in my computer. So far I can't tell any functional issues using it this way. The cool thing too is that I put my stock hdd in the other slot and can use that as my time machine backup and it is super quick (which means I'll actually do it once in a while) This thing would be super handy for someone who wants to install OS's and programs etc without having to put them in a machine or for back-up or for what I'm doing.

One issue is that there is no thunderbolt pass through which means if you don't have an overpriced finicky thunderbolt display from our good fruit friends then your display port is taken by this device. I solved this issue for less than a Ulysses S. Grant by purchasing a usb display adapter (sabrent uga-2k-195) Now I can hook up any monitor via dvi, vga or hdmi (all are included) and connect to my laptop through one of my usb ports. This probably isnt great for high res high frame rate video games but I watched an HD movie with no issues and general usage is perfect.

Overall it may seem a bit pricey but if you have a legitimate use the price gets forgotten quickly once your life gets easier and data moves around faster. It's a shame thunderbolt interfaces are still so expensive cuz its ef n awesome how fast it is.

Comments about HighPoint RocketStor RS5212 Thunderbolt Storage Dock:

I think most realize at this point in time, that your typical MacBook owner, outside of a film professional or developer, probably doesn't feel they have much use for the Thunderbolt port. That said, I hated that feeling - of not being able to use what has been sitting right in front of me all this time, so I decided to take the plunge.
This little dock has managed to change my opinion about Thunderbolt, entirely (it's not all hype).
Very fast, very simple – basically, anything you put in it will run at full speed and instantly mounts to the desktop (unlike most USB and firewire options in my experience). Yes, smooth may best describe the experience – it meshes very well with my work and play habits. You kind of get what apple was shooting for here, having seemingly avoided USB 3.0 for so long - especially once you use this thing for a few days. I can't say I miss the hiccups or the lag, or the occasional drive drops, or drives not always spinning down after you remove them, or having to reboot to access something and yeah…I started to make a mental list of all the annoying little things I no longer have to deal with.
External drives are a necessity for me (long-term storage for pictures, media and my artwork), and in the past I had settled for USB like everyone else. After experiencing the difference, I'm never going back….simple as that.
Definitely worth the investment - if your system has a Thunderbolt port and you work with external drives in any way, shape or form, it seems like a waste of time and money to settle for something else.

Comments about HighPoint RocketStor RS5212 Thunderbolt Storage Dock:
