I have scanned approximately 200 old negatives that have been in my attic for 20 plus years. I was skeptical about a scanner, but after researching how much it would cost to convert the old negatives to good quality files, I knew that I had to take a chance on a scanner. I have been impressed with the quality of the scans of both pictures and negatives. I scanned a few pictures to see the difference. The file size of a scanned picture is between 300 and 400 KB which will make a good 5X7. I am scanning my negatives at 6400dpi resolution. This generates a file size of about 45 to 50 MB. I import into Aperture and the resulting JPEG is between 3.5 to 6 MB. At this resolution, the scans take between 3 to 4 minutes per image. At 9600dpi the time is greater than 5 minutes and the file size is approximately 100 to 110 MB and the resulting JPEG is between 8 to 9 MB. The quality between to 6400dpi and the 9600dpi is not noticeable for my purposes. Your main enemy with a flat bed scanner is DUST! I have not found the software to be very helpful at reducing the dust. Nothing beats a clean slide and clean scanner.

Although all of the reviews here are overwhelmingly positive, I did find reviews on other sites that mention slow scanning speeds and dust within the unit.

I'm using the unit primarily for old slides and 35mm negatives.

My unit is taking about 3 minutes, 15 seconds per slide or negative (2,400 dpi). That's painfully slow.

The carrier for negatives is a weak point, unless your negatives are quite flat. Any curl to them and the catches on the carrier have a hard time staying closed. They need to make this from beefier material.

Yesterday when I powered-on the unit, I had the lid open for the first time when the scanning light did a self-test and was disappointed to see dust on the inside of the glass scanning surface. If I had seen this before the 30-day return window, I'd have sent it back pronto. Unfortunately, I'm just a few days past.

I do like the fact that the software automatically isolates each slide or negative image and creates a separate file for it. That's sweet.

Super great scanner, I've been in the photography business over forty five (45) years and since all film processing has gone digital, this scanner allows me to scan in and convert negatives from the
Past to computer files of today. Therefore nothing is lost and the other things that can be done with this scanner. Outstanding product. Drdee

Digitizing B&W 120 negatives, have not tried color yet. 1963 to 1995
I have a long way to go. It is a slow process but results are good. The
negative carrier is flimsy, takes time to get used to it. Have not tried 35mm
color slides or negative film, bought the unit to do 21/4 x 21/4 Rollie negatives.

All in all it works well.

I have not used this too much yet, but the quality is exceptional. While cumbersome, the Epson scanner driver/twain is workable, but I would prefer to use the VueScan version, which has a free trial and is $ after that (well worth it). There are some bells and whistles on the front panel that are unimportant to me; I use primarily to scan and restore old photos.

When I bought my new Dell Desktop with windows 8.1
in it I could no longer use my Epson 1660 because
I couldn't get the necessary software drivers for

found the Epson Perfection V550 Photo Film & Document Flat-Bed Scanner! So far I've found it to be a great product(I think Epson makes the best printers & scanners)I really have not had the time to try scanning some negatives & slides with it, but I did try copying my prints & documents & I was quite pleased. I have a Polariod SprintScan 4000 that I used to scan slides & negatives, it uses a SCSI board but, so far, there is no way to connect it to my new Dell desktop! So hopefully this Epson V550 will do a satisfactory slide/neg
scanning job! new technology is great!

Comments about Epson Perfection V550 Photo Film and Document Scanner:

I bought this to scan in family photos. I like how I can put multiple photos on the flatbed at once and it will make separate .jpgs of each. It saves time to batch process. To make the best use of my time, I change the filenames on the finished .jpgs to reflect family members' names while it is scanning a new batch of photos.

I also like how I can change the settings for individual photos in the batch to make each look its best. The preview mode lets me see the result before I scan.

It appears that the digital ICE technology is not available for photos? (only slides or film?) In any case, it won't let me change the setting to turn it on.

The one negative: I have experienced it hanging up numerous times after using it for an hour or so. To get it to work again, I have to unplug the USB connection and plug it back in. This is why I have not given it 5 stars.

I do feel the scanned photos look good. I am doing them at 1200 dpi.

A few months ago i was searching for a small scanner that was able to scan color, b/n negatives, slides and if possible 120mm, to my surprise this one did it and even 4x5. I decided to buy this model after comparing it with other newer and bigger models, but this in paper looked good for the job and once it arrived has performed very well. It is slightly longer and old school scanners but its very light, less than 10 pounds, does previews right away in any format though once you select a big output it will take a few minutes about 8 the more i have waited for 48 bits 800 dpi and 17x19 inches. Other than that is pretty close to a plug n play device. Very simple to use.

I have made some beautiful 16" x 20" prints from the scanned files. The software provided gives the user a full range of control.I am using an iMac computer and an Epson 3880 printer.

I bought this mainly to scan in old 35 mm negatives. I like that you can scan a strip of 5 negs at one time and it separates them into separate JPEG files. So far, I have been happy with the scan quality. It is a little slow, but I expected that based on other reviews.

Comments about Epson Perfection V550 Photo Film and Document Scanner:

Got this to scan old family photo's, slides and negatives for preservation in a digital library for the kids. The unit worked right out of the box so set up was a breeze. The scanner is far more accurate than it really needs to be for the task at hand. With some limitations, it will scan and separate several photos at once and there is no "warm-up" time. The scanner doesn't have an auto feed although with all the shapes, sizes and curvatures of the input data, I doubt one would be useful. I had been using an Epson Workforce 630 for the task but this new flatbed is much faster and sharper and the clean-up and color aides seem to work much better.
