Durable, sturdy, and portable... there's not much more I wanted from a lighstand. I use these with Elinchrom 600RX monolights and often with very large softboxes (5' Octadome). They are very sturdy and fold up nicely for transport. I carry four in a Kata stand bag and while heavy, the steel feels sturdier than the aluminum versions.

It can hold a considerable amount of weight and has doubled as a stand for a junior boom and light several times. Total weight with boom, light, and counterweight was around 25-30 lbs and there were no stability issues.

I purchased this as a replacement for some cheap linco stands. The risers on this stand are much sturdier than the linco which tends to bend with moderate weight. I was disappointed to find how easy these stands are to tip over. With the cheap linco stands one sand bag was enough to do the trick. This stand requires two and still not as sturdy as the linco. I have a c-stand which is great and sturdy. Storage and transport are a pain though. I guess I will have to keep looking for something in between. Just not really confident in this stand enough to risk my strobes on it. Will probably use it to hold light weight grip items such as foam core.

This is a great HEAVY stand. User serviceable if you need to repair it. Tall enough for most all uses. Much more convenient to pack vs a c stand.

Well worth the cost. Easy to store and easy to set-up. Solid and strong; to be expected from Matthews. With a few sandbags, easily held up a Profoto D1 monolight in a Profoto 5 ft Octobox on a boom.

Sure, you could always pay less for a stand, but for the little difference in cost, you get A LOT more value and product for your investment!

These stands are nice and solid. They can also hold up most light fixtures you would want to put on them. I did receive one stand with a bent T-Handle on the leg riser but I contacted MSE and they sent me one right away. They are pretty heavy but that isn't a bad thing. They are very solid.

Comments about Matthews Maxi Kit Steel Stand:

I bought these stands as an upgrade, as my last set (a different brand) were cheaply made and the knobs broke on a couple of them on the first use.

I can't boast enough about the quality of the product and how well these are made. I love the heavy duty aspect and can tell these will last me a long time. Since I've had them, I've loved that the knobs don't seem like I'm going to break them if I overtighten. Major plus! Also, these are great at holding heavier weighted items like counter-weighted booms and other various lighting tools like large scrims. Another thing I've noticed that is great, is these don't seem to stick when trying to get the tripod/legs to fold out. It's easy!

If there were one thing I'd say someone might dislike, it'd be how heavy these are, as they do weigh quite a bit, especially if you're carrying them to and fro for on-location shoots. However, this doesn't seem to bother me at all. I prefer good quality heavier products over possibly risking my things blowing over or buckling due to the lightweight materials aspect.

Oh, and I guess the fact that these aren't air-cushioned is a slight downer. Just be careful with them and you'll be fine.

Comments about Matthews Maxi Kit Steel Stand:

I was looking for a stand that would fit in a location lighting kit for some of my heavier lights (1 and 2Ks, 1200 par HMIs) and this was a lifesaver! I've never been quite comfortable putting larger units like those above on aluminum stands but I didn't want the bulk of combo stands, and these are just a perfect in-between! Solid steel construction but still light enough to be easily portable.

The only caveat is that the 5/8" spud on top is (like many other kit stands) relatively short, so don't expect to put a typical C-stand knuckle or something akin on it. But that's not really negative, as it's kind of a built-in safety matter so you don't overload the stand with something it couldn't easily suppport. Like all Matthews products, I give it the highest recomendation!

I was looking for a heavy duty light stand and this is by far the best I've come across, at least in the sub $ range. It's very well built and should last a lifetime. It's also heavy but I consider that a big plus for my needs. The only thing I would have liked is air cushioning, but can't have everything.

If you crave sturdy and long lasting versus light weight and temporary, Mathews steel stands are the way to go. I also use Mathews C stands and the folding stands are a nice compliment to the system. Yes, they are heavy, but that's the trade off for securely and safely mounting heavy lights. I am very satisfied with their performance and quality construction.

Comments about Matthews Maxi Kit Steel Stand:

After much research, I chose this high quality Matthews stand. As I write this, a second Maxi Steel stand is in-route to me from BHPhoto.

Solid construction. No plastic. This is a stand that will allow me to expand my off camera lighting needs with future strobes.

Aluminum stands are great for portability, but I wanted a stand to be multi-functional as well. Hold a solid boom with a strobe or maybe a backdrop, this stand will do whatever I need now and in the future.

Yes I could have purchased a much less expensive stand, but at a sacrifice of quality. A good investment in Matthews pro gear!

My thanks to the other reviewers on B&H for accurate and dependable reviews.

This is not a light weight stand for it's size, but that's what I wanted when I'm putting my personal lighting gear 9' over head... add a sand bag and/or a generator pack and these stands aren't going anywhere if and when they are bumped. These stands are my regular work horses until I need more height and then I'm off to a c-stand or a Junior.

Comments about Matthews Maxi Kit Steel Stand:

I purchased one of these lightstands a few months ago. I was impressed by its sturdiness, effective locking mechanisms, and overall build quality. It is by far the best lightstand I have ever used. I was so impressed that I ordered three more.

Keep in mind, these are not lightweight stands. They aren't the tallest, either. But these things compact down nicely, and they easily hold up a monolight with any modifier I have access to (including a 4'x6' softbox) without bending. For the money, you just can't beat this stand.

You know what you get when you buy gear from Matthews, nothing else than top of the line, beffy and not as heavy as it looks, you won't go wrong, great studio light stand, light enough I even take it on location.

The only stands you will find cheaper will be just that...cheap.
These stands are all steel (no plastic) and built for indoor/outdoor use.
For the height, load capacity and quality, these stands are a great value.

Really solid, works great with 1x1 litepanels and batteries.

I got them as a more compact alternative to c-stands for when I am on the road and they have been great.

Comments about Matthews Maxi Kit Steel Stand:

The Maxi Kit is a nice portable yet strong 'kit'-style stand, but with limits.

It's all steel construction and build make for a robust unit. However, the compact size when closed requires a number of shorter risers to get to max height. This results in the top-most riser essentially being a 5/8" or 'baby' extension rod with a pin machined in - this reduces it's use with heavier mods up high and/or with anything notable extended out with an arm on an extended top riser. In short, a great portable strong kit stand that stands head & shoulders above your basic Alu kit stand, but don't try and stretch it beyond it's design intent.
