The Genie Motion Control Time Lapse Device from Syrp is your key to the creative world of time lapse photography or real time video. The 4" cube takes up very little space in your bag and at only 3.3 lb it's easy to make it part of your standard rig.

The Genie, which allows both panning and linear motion control, attaches to standard gear such as dollies, sliders, jib arms and tripods. Simply attach the panning accessory to your tripod or support and mount your optional camera and ball head to the 3/8"-16 stud atop the Genie. The weight of your equipment is rarely a concern since it supports up to 44 lb. An illuminated bubble level is built in to help in setting up for panoramas. The Genie has factory presets such as Stars, People or Clouds but you can enter an unlimited amount of user presets into the Genie's memory for custom work. At maximum panning speed a 360° pan takes 5 seconds, while 39" of linear movement takes 23 seconds.

Linear time lapse can be done on a rail or on a linear support system of your own making. While the Genie comes with 9.85' of rope to pull it across the rail, the movement of your time lapse is only limited by the length of your rope. Kevlar-cored rope with lengths of 328', 164' or 32.8' are available for separate purchase. The Genie has been tested successfully on a homemade 60' dual cable stretched over a lake.

Inputs include both USB for firmware and a sensor input. The free firmware upgrade enables bulb ramp-in and ramp-out functions and HDR (High Dynamic Range). Ramping is the process of modifying exposure settings on a camera in order to maintain a desired exposure value while the camera is in Bulb mode. This is especially valuable for transitional day into night, or night into day time lapses.

The sensor input accepts a motion, light, sound or other type of sensor to start your program in response to specific stimuli. The Genie ships with both panning and sliding bases, two slider mounts, 9.85' of rope and a multi-voltage charger for its built-in battery. A three-hour charge gives you about 12 hours of run time, depend on the weight of your camera. The Genie is compatible with approximately 130 cameras from nine major brands.

It also enables the user to setup time-lapse or camera movement to start on a delay timer. Auto Power Off shuts down the Genie when it's unused for 1 hour to save battery power

I am using this with an EOS 5D III to take time-lapse. I have used both the rotation attachment as well as the linear fixture. If you are into time-lapse you will find this a very useful device. It is unique, well thought out, easy to program and use. Battery life is more than 8 hours and charging is quick. The movements are strong; you will not bog this down easily. The accuracy of the movements is incredible. The firmware update went smoothly and it is nice to know that the manufacturer allowed for new features and bug fixes.

So there is a lot to like. But it is not a 5 star device. Elements of "Chinese cheap" are all too obvious. The ballhead is frustrating and of poor quality as compared to RRS or other vendors you might use. The charger feels like it will only last a short time before the stiff and thin wires break. The protective plastic over the screen is easily scratched. Most troubling is that the mechanical connection to the rotation or linear attachments is secure but not solid. When snapped into place I doubt if it will ever come off but it does wiggle around somewhat.

Don't let this stop you if you want to get some really fun and unique video! Companies like Syrp that innovate to let us be more creative should be rewarded. Maybe there will be a Mk II version with a bit better quality that is programmable from an ap.

My goal was use the Genie Motion Controler as a second camera operator on a slider for visual interest. The first issue I experienced was keeping the Genie's tention string tight on both ends of my Cinevate slider with the supplied velcro attachment straps that Syrup supplies with the Genie. It would work for a couple takes and then stretch loose. I would recommend buying some I bolts and small carbeaners that you attach to your slider to raise the strings so they are at a level plane and inline with string wheel mechanism on the Genie. This was the only way I could tighten the the string down to shoot multiple takes with out having to stop the shoot, take the Genie controller off the mount and constanly retighten the sting to move the motion controller along my slider.I was never able to keep them tight for multiple slider motion takes using the velcro attachements that Syrp supplied. They use velcro straps so it is really impossible to lock them down. I also dont like to have to continue to hit buttons to bring the controller back to the start position and start again each time. It would be nice if this could been auto programmed. As mentioned in other reviews to edit your setting requires additional button pushing to make a simple edit. You also need to push the buttons slowly or you will not be able to enter the various menu fuctions. I cant speak to the timelapse as I never used that feature. On a positive side the Genie is built solid and battery life is awesome! The last issue was the noise of the motor while in motion. I film a lot of interview type shoots and it was all most impossible not to pick up the sound of the motor even when the unit was over 12-15 foot away from the talent. I ended up returning the Genie for these reasons!Jeff

Comments about Syrp Genie Motion Control Time Lapse Device:

This little thing is amazing, you can do so much with it. Easy to navigate menu, it already comes with built in pre-sets (even more easy), you can also have your own costume presets, but my favorite part is that is super lightweight, fits almost anywhere, quick to setup and you are ready to go. I personally would recommend this to any friend and family. The only issues I had on the field was one time it wasn't sending the signal to the camera to take the picture so the Syrp Genie was moving, telling how many pictures and how much time was left on the screen but the shutter on the camera wasn't even moving at all. I tried everything from connecting, disconnecting the cable, turning off both camera and Syrp, taking of batteries, I even tried to reset it but it gave me nothing; so I lost an entire day of production. The weather was pretty chill that day, it wasn't cold or hot, I don't know why wasn't working or what was happening in the moment. The next day I recharged the Syrp without being dead and all of a sudden it was fine like nothing happened. That is the only problem I had so far with it, it was just glitching that day. At the end I still use it almost every single day and it haven't been causing more problems so that is a good thing. I really like this product I think is revolutionary for many purposes.

Comments about Syrp Genie Motion Control Time Lapse Device:

Great idea, decent product. My only issue is the removable base isn't very sturdy, there is too much play which could be a problem if it's windy. I would give this 5 stars if the base was tight. Easy to use, I like that you can save custom settings. I plan to by the slider track soon. Firmware was easy to update. Battery last a long time even in the cold. My first time lapse was a 3 hour night time lapse in 10 degree weather and it didn't even put a dent in the battery. Here is a video example http://youtu.be/kIsazvnKXYc

Comments about Syrp Genie Motion Control Time Lapse Device:

So I've had this product for several months and taken it out into the field half a dozen times. My frustration is centered around the base mount. The main head sits on the removable Panning platform, however the platform shakes. It moves perhaps 1-2mm in all directions or a slight rattle. For $...I would expect the base to be stable..not ratteling. It worked in calm conditions...but when the winds picked up to about 7-10mph the balance of the camera and lens created movement on the base...which is driving me crazy. I don't know why they didnt put bearings down and seal the plate so it's completely stable. The panning programs are easy to use and for timelapse or exposure work longer than 30 seconds or the max exposure setting on your camera, an additional intervolmeter will be necessary as the Genie does not have the ability to set exposure control like an introvolmeter.

I use the syrp with my video cameras to capture time lapse and also use it for cameras which are without an operator. Setting the unit to slide means I can get nice panning shots without a camera operator needing to be there.

              Very simple to set up.

Looking forward to experimenting more with the possibilities...

Quality of the product is very high and support from syrp in NZ is A1.

Comments about Syrp Genie Motion Control Time Lapse Device:

I was able to set it up an use right out of the box. I plan to use it for time lapse video and coporate profile projects. The precision of the pan and tilt head is phenomenal

I would prefer a stronger and longer cable though.

Comments about Syrp Genie Motion Control Time Lapse Device:

The unit seems solidly built. Fit and finish are very good - especially parts that connect to the head & tripod. However, I thought I felt some minute play in the connection - and I'm not sure where it comes from - but once the unit was going - it did not seem to make much difference.

The weight of 3.3 lbs may not seem like much, but in this small package its density makes it seem heavier than it is. That's not a drawback - I think it helps add some stability.

In a first test-shoot my Canon intervalometer battery died. I'd planned to use it instead of the $20 cable (so I did not order it - my bad - make sure you order the extra the cable, sold separately. *Hey BH - you need to offer the cable as part of the default bundle!*).

Consequently, I had to trigger the images every 5 seconds...600 times...by hand. As a test this shoot taught me a lot - and how easy it is to program the unit; plan a time-lapse; see a preview of its path; save the settings - or just go with its defaults which are quite good - and check my batteries.

It even has a countdown clock so I could see how long the cramps in my extremities were going to last...

It seemed a bit pricey at first - but the added ease and impressive results definitely justify the cost because the benefits are so high.

As rough as my test was - with manually triggering the camera - the results were truly spectacular. We'll see just how robust this unit is - I plan to use it on every shoot in some way or another...

Now if I can just get my fingers to uncurl...

Comments about Syrp Genie Motion Control Time Lapse Device:
