The Tripod Collar by Fotodiox attaches your Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens to a tripod or monopod while stabilizing it. A locking knob helps safely secure the collar to your lens. The knob can be loosened, allowing you to turn your camera from landscape to portrait mode without removing your camera from your tripod or adjusting your tripod head. The collar is coated with a matte white finish.

I bought this ring to use on my monopod for long shooting days and I put it through it's paces for the first time at the Lone Star LeMans race in Austin, TX last weekend.Functionally, the ring does what it's supposed to do, but I do not like the mechanism for the clamp. It does not stay closed fully and even when it is, the ring moves around the camera easily. While shooting, I could feel the camera turning inside the ring. There is a layer of felt glued to the inside of the ring and as a result I'll need to remove and replace that or enhance the interface somehow. If the price difference between this and the Canon version weren't so significant, I'd have just bought the Canon. But, at $[$]?

Comments about FotodioX Tripod Collar for Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I bought this to use only occasionally so I didn't want to spend on the Canon branded version which costs several times more money. I think this works just fine. It snaps closed and can not come off unless you turn the knob to loosen it and then pull the knob away from the device. This releases the catch. Just loosening the knob does not allow the collar to pop open. When the knob is turned to tighten the collar does not allow the lens to turn at all.

I have not used the Canon branded one so I don't know what the differences are but this one works just fine. The collar is lined with black felt to keep the movement of the lens within it nice and smooth but there is a little roughness and metal on metal thing happening there too. I might take a file to it sometime soon.

Like I said, it works and that's all it has to do.

It feels solid and balanced well enough on my 7D, fits the lens snugly, i feel not slipping at all. Appreciate the extra safety on the knob that the lens won't fall out. Price is very good value.

Like others, I have balked at the $ price for the Canon lens collar. Thus far (2 shoots), no complaints with this collar. Secure on the lens, has a pin-lock so the collar can't accidentally open, easy to loosen to turn the camera into vertical orientation. Solid on the monopod. Excellent performance to dollar ratio.

This collar works but there is a little bit of wiggle, even after knob is tightened. Still makes the balance of the lens and camera much better so it's a keeper.
