The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera is a bridge-style point-and-shoot digital camera that features a 16.1 megapixel High Sensitivity BSI MOS sensor and Venus Engine image processor to produce high resolution still imagery and full HD 1080i/p video with notable low-light quality. The combination of the processor and sensor enable a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-3200, which can be further expanded to ISO 6400. The processor also affords a wealth of speed to the camera, including the ability to record up to 9 fps in a 3-shot burst, 5 fps with one-shot AF, or 2 fps with continuous AF.

The built-in Lumix DC Vario 60x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 20-1200mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives for working in almost any shooting situation. Benefitting this extensive zoom range is POWER O.I.S., which works to minimize the appearance of camera shake when working with greater zoom magnifications and under low-light conditions. This image stabilization system also features an Active Mode that is well-suited to creating steady HD movies by countering the appearance of camera shake in a variety of directions.

Full HD 1080i video at 60 fps is supported in the high quality AVCHD codec and greatly benefits from the inclusion of a Windshield Zoom Microphone and Dolby Digital audio quality. The built-in stereo microphone works to significantly reduce wind noise in order to provide clearer overall audio quality. Its zoom design is also well-paired to the zoom lens to help achieve natural sounding recordings.

For image monitoring and playback, both a 3.0" 460k-dot LCD monitor and a 0.20" 202k-dot electronic viewfinder are available as bright, clear means for viewing. Also extending the functionality of the FZ70 is a hot shoe to facilitate the use of an external flash and an HDMI port for linking the camera to an HDTV for vivid image playback. A host of creative effects are available too, for enhancing the aesthetic appearance of both still images and movies in-camera.

Lumix DC Vario 60x Optical Zoom Lens
A tremendously long-reaching Lumix DC Vario 60x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 20-1200mm, covering wide-angle to super telephoto lengths to suit shooting from nearly any vantage point. Extending the magnification of this lens even further is Intelligent Resolution technology, which effectively renders the zoom ratio to 120x with minimal image degradation. The maximum f/2.8-5.9 aperture benefits working in low-light conditions at the wide end of the zoom range and also contributes to greater control over focus placement.

The lens construction integrates six aspherical elements, with nine aspherical surfaces, and three extra-low dispersion elements to minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness and clarity.
16.1MP High Sensitivity MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
A 16.1 megapixel 1/2.3" High Sensitivity MOS sensor utilizes Back Side Illuminated technology to render imagery clearly and well-detailed with notable low-light quality. The sensor works in conjunction with the Venus Engine image processor to minimize visible noise and provide a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-3200, which can be further extended to ISO 6400 when working in High Sensitivity mode. The image processor also affords a wealth of speed and performance throughout the camera system including a fast start-up time of 0.9 sec. and full-resolution continuous shooting rates up to 9 fps (in a 3 frame burst), 5 fps with single-shot AF, or 2 fps with continuous AF.
Full HD Video with Dolby Digital Audio
Full HD 1080i video recording at 60 fps is supported in the high quality AVCHD codec for fluid, well-detailed movies and 1080p video at 30 fps is also available in the Internet-friendly MP4 format. A dedicated movie record button allows for a seamless transition into the recording mode and Creative Video Mode settings offer greater control over the appearance of movies by allowing for the adjustment of shutter speed and aperture settings during recording.

Also contributing to effective movies is the use of Dolby Digital Stereo Creator and the inclusion of a Windshield Zoom Microphone, which is able to substantially reduce the amount of wind in audio recordings to realize notably clear sound with videos. The sealed structure of the microphone works to prevent wind from reaching the microphone directly and the draft structure suppresses the retention of air internally in order to realize unaffected sound quality. Additionally, the microphone has audio zoom capabilities to match the lens' zoom in order to provide a realistic sound quality when recording videos.
POWER O.I.S. with Active Mode
POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) works to effectively minimize the appearance of camera shake when shooting with longer shutter speeds or greater zoom magnifications in order to realize stable, sharp, and clear imagery. This stabilization system also features Active Mode, which benefits video recording by accounting for different directions of movement in order to steadier movie recordings, even while walking or moving when recording.
Camera Design
The design of this bridge camera incorporates both a 3.0" 460k-dot rear LCD monitor with anti-reflective coating and a 0.20" 202k-dot electronic viewfinder for live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation. The EVF is a convenient means for eye-level viewing, which is especially useful in bright lighting, and also provides an additional point of contact between you and the camera to further aid in stabilizing shots when working with greater zoom magnifications or when shooting in low-light conditions. A large ergonomic grip is also integrated into the FZ70's design to further add a measure of stability when shooting.

Additionally, a hot shoe is incorporated into the body to support the use of an optional external flash for greater illumination and flash control beyond that of the built-in pop-up flash.
Other Camera Features
  • iA (Intelligent Auto) mode automatically sets all camera exposure settings to clearly render the scene at hand, allowing you to simply compose and shoot. iA Plus Mode allows for even greater control through adjustment of background focus, exposure compensation, and white balance settings.
  • In-camera HDR works to extend the visible dynamic range of image by recording several images at once with varying exposure settings and then overlaying them into a single image to garner greater shadow and highlight detail.
  • Creative Control provides 15 different filter effects for modifying the appearance of your images: Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Star Filter, and One Point Color. Many of these filters can be used during video recording and, additionally, these filters can be applied to images after shooting by using the Creative Retouch mode.
  • Creative Panorama mode automatically stitches together multiple images in order to realize one wide-spanning horizontal or vertical image. A range of filter effects can also be applied to panoramic images, including Retro, Expressive, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Old Days, Cross Process, and One Point Color.
  • RAW file recording renders image files with greater room for post-processing adjustment compared to the standard JPEG file type.
  • An HDMI port is integrated into the camera's design to allow for direct playback of photos and movies to an HDTV.
  • Language support: English and Spanish.

After having the camera for a month, I need to update my review. Many good features are said of this camera, particularly of the zoom, which can actually go to 520X in extreme digital mode. Easy to use camera in the Auto mode, but can be a bit tricky setting the settings in the M mode. Creative control is nice for various effects, but no variable parameter contols. Go to Lightroom or Photoshop for the final shutter snap. Video is very good and can get the maximum time of 29 minutes 59 seconds. I recommend using 1920 AVCHD format, Now on the downside, and Panasonic should have seen this. No mic input, no ability to use wireless remote shutter control, no swivel out LCD panel, and using an external power adapter, the lid will not close, and no access to change batter or SD card while monted on a tripod or stabalizer. I made a DIY camera mount that works great

I bought this camera as a backup for my Canon 60D when outdoors hiking and for adventures. I have an older model Panasonic and love it. I even use it for my underwater photography, so I was expecting a bit more after all of the hype. However, Panasonic didn't even get the basics right on this one. The only setting that gets clear, focused pictures right is the "AI" setting. None of the others can zoom and focus in a decent amount of time. That's pretty basic in my book, focusing on each setting. The other disappointment is the new software. This camera shoots raw, and creates a proprietary file that not even Lightroom can read, so you must use their software, only problem is, it isn't compatible with Windows 7. I use both Mac and a PC, and the software isn't compatible with Mac, and after loading on the PC creates an ongoing cycle that doesn't allow you to actually access the program! And yes, I have deleted it and reinstalled it twice just to be sure it was installing properly. So, I now have HDR images taken at Yellowstone and Grand Tetons that I cannot even access. This is such a disappointment! Wait until they get all of this right before purchasing. They have some real work to do!!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera:

Re: Panasonic DMC-FZ70 A couple of months ago I started out to find me a new hybrid backup camera for my digital SLR and for vacations and hiking trips. I made a list of "must have" features and one of "be nice to have" features. I also put a max price of $. A few of my must haves were long telephoto, threaded front of telephoto lens, RAW format, and viewfinder. After a few weeks of research, the only camera that met almost all of my requirements was the FZ70. I ordered the camera from B&H Photo and received item in short order. Excellent service from B&H Photo. I spent over a week reading the advanced manual and practicing the settings on the camera. As an old tech writer I can tell you that the manual is not well organized and some facts about the settings are not in the manual, or at least not yet found by me. I like the feel and heft of the FZ70. It fits nicely in my hands and seems to be well built for the sale price of $. The stabilization of the camera at long range hand-held telephoto shots seems to do a good job. I use mostly the PASM shooting modes which is where you can get RAW pictures. In the other modes that I have used (Scenic, panoramic, HDR) are all in JPEG but seem to do an excellent job. I am still in the learning curve with a good bit to learn yet. So far I am well pleased with its many functions and performance. For a hybrid it's as close to a DSLR that I have seen. I don't believe it can be beat for the price.

This Lumix was very disappointing as its images are very soft and fuzzy all the way thru the focal range. I compared it to my Lumix DMC-ZS20 which is far suppior in sharpness. I have returned it to B&H.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera:

My job, shooting properties in Yucatan, Mexico, required a good wide angle lens. My hobby shooting nature required a good telefoto lens. My last Canon digital had lenses I could interchange. The camera was expensive and changing lenses was a pain. It got stolen. So I searched around and bought the Panasonic.

I cannot even begin to tell you how extremely pleased I am with this camera! I really searched the internet and there was nothing like it for this price.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera:

After doing some research and read about the Panasonic DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera quality and performance, I decided to order the camera from B&H Super Store.
I'm very happy with the performance and the quality of the camera, pictures qualilty are great and I love the 20-1200mm len. It's amazing thing that Panasonic can compact an 20-1200mm zoom onto this camera. I choose this camera for a couple of reasons because the camera has a long zoom but I don't have to carry big bag and lens and the quality of the pictures are very impressed. And the price that I pay for it is a fraction of a Telephoto zoom lens. I'm very satisfied with the quality and performance of this Panasonic DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera.
Thanks Panasonic for a good job on this Camera.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera:

I was eager to receive my recent order of a Panasonic Lumix FZ70 - but to be blown away by its performance and quality - who would have believed you could get the equivalent of a $1000 DSLR for less that [$]?My main purpose in ordering this camera was to have a digital camera that was light, easily portable and (most importantly )had a viewfinder. I have severe presbyopia and would be constantly taking off and putting on a pair of reading glasses to see the screen of my iPhone which was usually visually obscured by the ambient light of everyday outdoor shooting. This camera solves that problem as I hoped it would...but I discovered it could do so much more. I couldnt have imagined it possessed so many extraordinary features normally assocaited with only the most expensive DSLRs. Hand-held night photography? Chedk. Extreme macros? Check. In camera special effects? Check. And a zoom that has to be experienced to be believed. Focus on a distant feature that literally can barely be seen from your current position and then slowly zoom out until you discover that it is so far away that in the full wide position of the zoom it has disappeared completely! Even has a "hidden" ability to make time-lapse video in the MINIATURE setting. Take pictures in reduced sizes for social media use or go full-blast RAW for Photoshop lovers. Be sure to download the full users manual PDF file for a course in this cameras many, many features. To the cameras amazing feature list (see the description in the details of the catalog listing on B&H's website) add an exceptionally protective and handy carrying case with internal straps that allow the camera lens to be cuddled by the case and leave room from the neck strap as well...and I scarcely need to mention that the kit comes with a 16GB highspeed SD card. I am a confirmed addict of B&H photo and this cements that relationship once again. I am SOOooo happy.

I have been using Lumix cameras for many years. My old FZ18 has served me well but I was ready for an upgrade with some new technology. The FZ70 was the obvious choice! I have had it for a week and love the ease of use, clear and great colors and the editing software built in to the camera. I highly recommend this camera.

Looked at and compared alot of cameras in this price range, some in the [$] range and always came back to this. We are glad we did. What an easy to use Camera. Takes Great pictures, the zoom is just awsome. We used it for the first time at our kids basketball game and after a little figuring out I was a pro taken pro pics. Very Happy, and never regret buying from B&H Photo.

I love this camera. I had a lumix like this before and have missed it ever since. I love the zoom on this camera which comes in very handy when making pictures of kids. You can make a picture up close without getting to close loosing the moment. It is super easy to work with and has some great features.

60x Zoom. 20mm super wide to 1200mm super telephoto. For less than $. No, the image quality is not equal to my 24mp APS-C dSLR, but, to get the range this Panasonic offers I would have to carry 3-5 lenses at 15 punds or more. This is about a pound. No brainer. Besides, I don't do vacations to get images to sell, I do vacations to get memories to keep and this camera deliveres the goods!

I used to use the old 35mm format years ago but got involved with other things in life. I decided, at Christmas time no less, that I wanted to get back into photography. I looked an MANY different manufacturers, models and commentary on them all. Then, while shopping one day, I saw this Lumix on the shelf. I took it down, played with it a bit and promptly went home to do my homework. WOW! 90+% if the people who reviewed the camera loved it. Not wanting to reinvent the wheel and double-checking my past research, I decided to purchase the Lumix DMC-FZ70. I have been so totally impressed with the ease of operation, the many options it has, easy to read screen, the light weight, etc. I could go on and on but I'm sure you're tired of reading this review. Bottom line: this thing ROCKS!

Switch from regular photo to video with the push of a button near the shutter; press again to stop video. Got some impressive video (with sound)and still shots of a huge flock of geese settling in on a flooded rice field off SR 70. Huge 60x zoom and built in anti-shake feature. Haven't had it that long and it keeps surprising me with its features. One of the reasons I bought it was because it had a viewfinder as well as a nice large LCD screen. Seems few bridge cameras have viewfinders any more.

I got this so I wouldn't have to keep changing from my 150-600 lens to my 18-200 lens. This is a wonderful camera for taking those landscape and up close pictures. Great pictures, great camera and great price.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera:

I am a professional photographer/videographer, and I shoot with a Canon 7D. My 15 year old daughter has recently caught the photography bug, but like most kids these days, she changes her mind a lot. She asked for a camera for Christmas, and she actually found this Lumix DMC-FZ70 on her own and brought it to my attention. I put the camera through it's paces when it arrived to make sure it worked for her on Christmas day.I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed with a lot of the features of the camera, but also turned-off by others. But for a $ price point, the PROS definitely outweigh the CONS.I have to first start off by saying the 60X (1200mm) zoom on this camera is phenomenal. Not only in how far it can reach, but also by how well the image stabilization works, it is equally amazing! At full 60X zoom, handheld, I was able to capture very sharp images. With 1200mm at your fingertips, it almost feels naughty knowing how I could photo-snipe people. The only things I don't really like about it, but again, these are easily dismissed with knowing the price I paid are as follows:1: Manual focusing is quite cumbersome. It cannot be achieved with a focus ring on the lens. That isn't an option. You have to push a button to switch to manual focus, then push in on another dial to get to the spot where you can manually focus, and then use the same dial to hone in on your subject, but in a zoomed in view, which is also kind of ugly.2. Sort of on the same subject, using the same dial/button, this is how you would also manually adjust the F-Stop and the shutter speed.3. Battery life is decent, but not as good as the battery in my Canon, but.....the size of the battery for the Lumix is considerably smaller.4. The viewfinder displays an LCD render, same as what you would see on the back of the LCD screen. My preference is a straight clean view from the lens (non-LCD) in the viewfinder. These things aside, taking test photos of the same subjects, I was able to achieve similar results to my Canon 7D. I was able to create nice background blur (bokeh). The video capturing abilities are also very nice. With continuous focus and focus tracking automatically, it is a very nice feature. This camera definitely takes better photos with good lighting (as all cameras do...duh), but not really recommended for anyone who is going to purchase this camera for low-light/night photography.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera:

I bought this camera as a gift for my granddaughter who has developed a very strong interest in photography. She has wanted to expand beyond a simple point and shoot and be more creative and after reading the reviews and specs for the Lumix, I felt it would be a perfect fit for her. When you consider the very wide range of features the camera has that you can learn about at your own pace, together with the price point the camera sells for, well...it's a no-brainer really. It's great for the novice as well as the folks who want to carry along a full-featured camera wherever they go and not be so concerned about making a huge investment. I'd highly recommend the Lumix and I haven't even mentioned the video capabilities which adds considerably to the value.
