The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera is a bridge-style point-and-shoot digital camera that features a 16.1 megapixel High Sensitivity BSI MOS sensor and Venus Engine image processor to produce high resolution still imagery and full HD 1080i/p video with notable low-light quality. The combination of the processor and sensor enable a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-3200, which can be further expanded to ISO 6400. The processor also affords a wealth of speed to the camera, including the ability to record up to 9 fps in a 3-shot burst, 5 fps with one-shot AF, or 2 fps with continuous AF.

The built-in Lumix DC Vario 60x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 20-1200mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives for working in almost any shooting situation. Benefitting this extensive zoom range is POWER O.I.S., which works to minimize the appearance of camera shake when working with greater zoom magnifications and under low-light conditions. This image stabilization system also features an Active Mode that is well-suited to creating steady HD movies by countering the appearance of camera shake in a variety of directions.

Full HD 1080i video at 60 fps is supported in the high quality AVCHD codec and greatly benefits from the inclusion of a Windshield Zoom Microphone and Dolby Digital audio quality. The built-in stereo microphone works to significantly reduce wind noise in order to provide clearer overall audio quality. Its zoom design is also well-paired to the zoom lens to help achieve natural sounding recordings.

For image monitoring and playback, both a 3.0" 460k-dot LCD monitor and a 0.20" 202k-dot electronic viewfinder are available as bright, clear means for viewing. Also extending the functionality of the FZ70 is a hot shoe to facilitate the use of an external flash and an HDMI port for linking the camera to an HDTV for vivid image playback. A host of creative effects are available too, for enhancing the aesthetic appearance of both still images and movies in-camera.

Lumix DC Vario 60x Optical Zoom Lens
A tremendously long-reaching Lumix DC Vario 60x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 20-1200mm, covering wide-angle to super telephoto lengths to suit shooting from nearly any vantage point. Extending the magnification of this lens even further is Intelligent Resolution technology, which effectively renders the zoom ratio to 120x with minimal image degradation. The maximum f/2.8-5.9 aperture benefits working in low-light conditions at the wide end of the zoom range and also contributes to greater control over focus placement.

The lens construction integrates six aspherical elements, with nine aspherical surfaces, and three extra-low dispersion elements to minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness and clarity.
16.1MP High Sensitivity MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
A 16.1 megapixel 1/2.3" High Sensitivity MOS sensor utilizes Back Side Illuminated technology to render imagery clearly and well-detailed with notable low-light quality. The sensor works in conjunction with the Venus Engine image processor to minimize visible noise and provide a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-3200, which can be further extended to ISO 6400 when working in High Sensitivity mode. The image processor also affords a wealth of speed and performance throughout the camera system including a fast start-up time of 0.9 sec. and full-resolution continuous shooting rates up to 9 fps (in a 3 frame burst), 5 fps with single-shot AF, or 2 fps with continuous AF.
Full HD Video with Dolby Digital Audio
Full HD 1080i video recording at 60 fps is supported in the high quality AVCHD codec for fluid, well-detailed movies and 1080p video at 30 fps is also available in the Internet-friendly MP4 format. A dedicated movie record button allows for a seamless transition into the recording mode and Creative Video Mode settings offer greater control over the appearance of movies by allowing for the adjustment of shutter speed and aperture settings during recording.

Also contributing to effective movies is the use of Dolby Digital Stereo Creator and the inclusion of a Windshield Zoom Microphone, which is able to substantially reduce the amount of wind in audio recordings to realize notably clear sound with videos. The sealed structure of the microphone works to prevent wind from reaching the microphone directly and the draft structure suppresses the retention of air internally in order to realize unaffected sound quality. Additionally, the microphone has audio zoom capabilities to match the lens' zoom in order to provide a realistic sound quality when recording videos.
POWER O.I.S. with Active Mode
POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) works to effectively minimize the appearance of camera shake when shooting with longer shutter speeds or greater zoom magnifications in order to realize stable, sharp, and clear imagery. This stabilization system also features Active Mode, which benefits video recording by accounting for different directions of movement in order to steadier movie recordings, even while walking or moving when recording.
Camera Design
The design of this bridge camera incorporates both a 3.0" 460k-dot rear LCD monitor with anti-reflective coating and a 0.20" 202k-dot electronic viewfinder for live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation. The EVF is a convenient means for eye-level viewing, which is especially useful in bright lighting, and also provides an additional point of contact between you and the camera to further aid in stabilizing shots when working with greater zoom magnifications or when shooting in low-light conditions. A large ergonomic grip is also integrated into the FZ70's design to further add a measure of stability when shooting.

Additionally, a hot shoe is incorporated into the body to support the use of an optional external flash for greater illumination and flash control beyond that of the built-in pop-up flash.
Other Camera Features
  • iA (Intelligent Auto) mode automatically sets all camera exposure settings to clearly render the scene at hand, allowing you to simply compose and shoot. iA Plus Mode allows for even greater control through adjustment of background focus, exposure compensation, and white balance settings.
  • In-camera HDR works to extend the visible dynamic range of image by recording several images at once with varying exposure settings and then overlaying them into a single image to garner greater shadow and highlight detail.
  • Creative Control provides 15 different filter effects for modifying the appearance of your images: Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Star Filter, and One Point Color. Many of these filters can be used during video recording and, additionally, these filters can be applied to images after shooting by using the Creative Retouch mode.
  • Creative Panorama mode automatically stitches together multiple images in order to realize one wide-spanning horizontal or vertical image. A range of filter effects can also be applied to panoramic images, including Retro, Expressive, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Old Days, Cross Process, and One Point Color.
  • RAW file recording renders image files with greater room for post-processing adjustment compared to the standard JPEG file type.
  • An HDMI port is integrated into the camera's design to allow for direct playback of photos and movies to an HDTV.
  • Language support: English and Spanish.

After having the camera for a month, I need to update my review. Many good features are said of this camera, particularly of the zoom, which can actually go to 520X in extreme digital mode. Easy to use camera in the Auto mode, but can be a bit tricky setting the settings in the M mode. Creative control is nice for various effects, but no variable parameter contols. Go to Lightroom or Photoshop for the final shutter snap. Video is very good and can get the maximum time of 29 minutes 59 seconds. I recommend using 1920 AVCHD format, Now on the downside, and Panasonic should have seen this. No mic input, no ability to use wireless remote shutter control, no swivel out LCD panel, and using an external power adapter, the lid will not close, and no access to change batter or SD card while monted on a tripod or stabalizer. I made a DIY camera mount that works great

I bought this camera as a backup for my Canon 60D when outdoors hiking and for adventures. I have an older model Panasonic and love it. I even use it for my underwater photography, so I was expecting a bit more after all of the hype. However, Panasonic didn't even get the basics right on this one. The only setting that gets clear, focused pictures right is the "AI" setting. None of the others can zoom and focus in a decent amount of time. That's pretty basic in my book, focusing on each setting. The other disappointment is the new software. This camera shoots raw, and creates a proprietary file that not even Lightroom can read, so you must use their software, only problem is, it isn't compatible with Windows 7. I use both Mac and a PC, and the software isn't compatible with Mac, and after loading on the PC creates an ongoing cycle that doesn't allow you to actually access the program! And yes, I have deleted it and reinstalled it twice just to be sure it was installing properly. So, I now have HDR images taken at Yellowstone and Grand Tetons that I cannot even access. This is such a disappointment! Wait until they get all of this right before purchasing. They have some real work to do!!

I am basically a point and shoot type, but I intend to explore more features of this camera as the summer unfolds! The few instances I have had to appreciate this camera in action have been amazing!! I have no doubt that I made a wise decision to buy this camera, and to buy from B&H. I have called them with a couple of questions that I couldn't resolve, and they walked me through them quickly and professionally.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera:

I am a huge nature fan and bird watcher and I really wanted a camera with a bigger zoom than what I was using (Panasonic FH25). I did some research and found the Panasonic FZ720. I LOVE the 60X zoom! I have been able to get some great bird/critter shots without getting so close and scaring them off. I also enjoy using the macro mode to get real close up to natures patterns. The only thing that isn't so great, is the amount of time it takes to take the picture. However, it is a very long lens, which is the main reason the pictures take time to process. Overall, I am very pleased with the camera.

I am not an experienced photographer and really wanted a camera that was easy to use right out of the box. The Lumix DMC-FZ70 was that camera!
What I love about this camera is that I was able to take some really beautiful shots using the fully automatic mode and I can experiment and learn in the manual mode.
I am also looking forward to using my Lumix to make short educational videos. I have not yet done that so stay tuned!
I feel I received excellent service and advice from the staff at B & H, shipping was fast and free and I had an excellent out-of- the box experience with this camera. I have only had it two weeks, but I love it.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera:

Bought the FZ70 when I noticed that I was often attaching a teleconverter to my failing, but not quite dead, FZ100. I have APSC equipment, with lenses up to 500mm, but was using the FZ as my "walking in the woods" camera almost exclusively for the convienience and weight. I figured that the extra zoom range would be welcome, but worried about hand holding a 1200mm equivalent lens in the less than perfect light that comes with shooting birds and wildlife. I have to say that the stabilization system on this camera blew me away. I'm taking a good percentage of decently crisp photos at full zoom at 1/10 to 1/30 of a second! Really! The FZ70s image quality is good for a small sensor camera, but I generally limit the ISO to 400 (I'm old enough to remember when ASA400 was hi-speed film), and shoot in RAW to get as much detail as possible. Focus is fast and generally accurate. The FZ70 is bigger than the FZ100 but not much heavier, and its certainly handier than the FZ100 with a Nikon TC 17 screwed on the front. There are some downsides to the camera. The rear screen is fixed. There's no lens hood, and the glass is really close to the end of the tube (but the lens is threaded so I added a UV filter to give me some protection). I was disappointed to discover that there's no port for a cable release, which is hard to understand on a camera with a lens this long that still lets me add a teleconverter if I feel the need. I'm satisfied that, given my interest in nature photography, where you never seem to have a lens that's quite long enough, the FZ70 was a good choice. If you're not into shooting birds and beasts, you may find a camera with an articulating screen and a lens hood will suit you better.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera:

I am so pleased with my new DMC-FZ70. Having a much older version - the DMC-LZ2 - I was aware of the excellent quality of these Panasonic cameras. I design jewelry and use this camera almost every day to shoot my new work for my website and marketing pieces. Adjusting to shooting in RAW has been a process, but I'm quickly learning what I need to do to make my work really pop off the page. I'd definitely recommend it to a friend.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera:

I bought this camera as a low-cost solution for covering events as I do for companies ever so often. I'm saving to buy a GH3/4 early next year so I didn't wanna get anything too expensive in the interim.

I'm loving it so far. The low-light / nighttime video performance is what really stands out for me, does a really good job at the nighttime events I go to, with the occasional help of external lights sometimes. The image stabilization is impressive and the zoom is out of this world! Literally! I can see onto my friends' front porch across the street!

I compared videos from this to my friends' T3i (with 18-55mm lens) that I sometimes use and I don't see any major differences.

On a whole, it captures decent video (which is the primary reason I bought it), the pictures are okay to me, don't really use it for that.

I do recommend downloading the Advanced User's manual from Panasonic too, it covers a ton more than what is covered in the manual it comes with.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera:

I use the camera for wildlife, nature, birding and biological identification. For blowing up pics for large prints (larger than 20 inches) the pics will loose clarity. The overall picture quality is quite good for a non-dslr. I especially like the array of manual controls that enable me to work my camera to the best of its ability, which again is surprisingly good. $ for a massive telephoto setup, or $ for twice the range and a little less clarity. Auto-focus could be faster, especially for birds in motion.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera:

I have a holiday coming up and did not want to take my best camera for fear of damage or theft. I purchased the Lumix DMC FZ70 for its extraordinary range of focal lengths in a fixed lens. At max telephoto it is 1200 mm. There are other bridge-style cameras which offer this, but only the FZ70 offers a max wide angle of 20 mm - ideal for landscapes and for up-close group shots. It's light, just the right size, and the controls are easy and intuitive. Seems pretty robust too. And it clearly has a great image stabilisation system, because you can actually take good pictures, hand held,at max telephoto. So far, the results look pretty good. It's probably not ideal for low light, having a smallish max aperture at most focal lengths, and at ISO more than 800 the noise becomes intrusive. But as a holiday camera, it ticks most of the boxes.

I am very pleased with our new Lumix.
The optics and 60x Optical Zoom are incredible!
In our case, the camera is used by many different staff members which means that great photos can be obtained in full auto mode with the shooter doing little more than aim & snap. But the camera is loaded with many enhancement features and manual modes that also allows those more experienced to obtain professional effects varying from adjustable depth-of-field to specialized digital effects.
Another great feature of the Lumix series is how very quickly that first shot can be taken within about one second of powering on the camera.

The FZ70 is worth the money for the average photo taker who wants to go a little further but does not want to go overboard. For the money it has some great features but if you are really serious you will need to step up to equipment that is very expensive. For what you get this is a great camera for the money. B&H was great with the price and delivery.

I am just a grandmother not into photography..just wanted better closer shots than a point and shoot for my Daughter. She has two children and got this camera for taking pictures on the ball field, DIY photo shots and sessions and well as every day life. The zoom is great you can get just child face or the whole field. I love how it focus on his face and blurs the background in close ups. It is not real bulky or to heavy, which was a concern of mine. So we can carry it around to events.
It will take some practice getting focus on the long zoom, and it takes a few seconds to focus when zoomed all the way out.
I have not learned how to use it well yet, but so far the color and sharpness is great for the price and size.

I bought this camera because of the 20mm wide angle lens on a point&shoot telephoto. What a fabulous camera. The lens is quick to focus, the range is phenomenal, the controls are simple to operate and the photos are are great. This is one of the most versatile digital cameras I have owned. All this at an amazingly low price.

Purchasing from a online store can sometimes be a nightmare. Communication is at the top of my list when deciding which store to do business with. With BH, they are #1 in my book for selection, pricing, customer service that are very informative on products they offer. The follow-up communications regarding order(s) and shipping info is spot on. What else would a consumer need! I only wish BH sold everything...then I wouldn't have to look and do due-diligence to find a store that compares to the high standardS that BH delivers. Your biggest fan!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera:

I was initially worried that the long zoom would be unusable in a camera at this price. Even at full zoom though, this camera takes great, clear shots (just make sure you are using a tripod). The settings are easy to use, and the camera fits really well in my hands. Focusing is fast, and with the automatic review turned off I can take the next shot within a second or so.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera:

I've got several other superzoom digicams, point an shoots and SLR but the more I have worked with this, the more impressed I am. Is it comparable to a $2500 DSLR, no. Is it still very useful even for those who have them, yes. Digicams are never quite DSLR's and that's true here as well but this is by far as close as I've seen one come. In some cases it's more than a DLSR because most can't afford a 1200 mm lens that's worth mounting on even the cheapest. When I first looked at this camera it sounded like one that if it's too good to be true, it really is. The other reviews were surprisingly good though so I gave it a shot. My biggest concern was being able to handhold at those long focal lengths and it's ability to focus there. Indoor my Sony and Nikon supper zooms frequently can't focus at full zoom and they are only 30 and 36x compared to the 60x on this which has no trouble focusing at full zoom indoors. In addition, I have gotten great shots outside at 1200 mm at 1/30 of a second and I don't have a terribly steady hand. That's pretty impressive. That full zoom really is usable. I shot two images from my front porch. The first at wide, you could barely see a birdhouse way out in my yard. It's was a dot you would overlook if I didn't point it out. The second shot at full zoom, it nearly filled the frame. Birdwatchers, you'll really enjoy this camera and the AF is fast enough to keep that zoom usable. One test shot in it's extended zoom mode at 5 MP you could see the material makeup of the piece of paper I shot. It is noisy compared to a DSLR, but in line with the other digicams and better than many. It looks like it would still be OK for typical prints over a wide range of iso's. The ability to add filters (55mm) and flash are also huge advantages. The layout is very good and I like being able to shoot square format images in camera. That's not a big deal, but a nice plus. The custom memory allows me to save all the settings I need to use a non-dedicated auto-aperture flash with it. Works great and I could even tune and save the white balance exactly to my liking. This tuning is by color temperature and a matrix layout for optimal control. This is common on DLSR's but not on many digicams and to me, an important feature. Macro is quite good and also to my surprise, the lens distortion was much better than I expected. I'm comparing to the 10-20 sigma and 8-16 sigma. Those are wider lenses, but also far more expensive than this complete camera. Sharpness was also decent, an notably better than by 10x and 36x Nikons. I have not messed with raw yet. The writeups on Silkypix were pretty poor but I will try it at some point anyway. Generally, if I'm serious enough to want RAW, I'm shooting a DLSR. Will I use this to shoot a wedding? Not as a main camera but I will bring it in case I need that killer zoom for something. In the early days of digital when some customers wanted all digital, I've sure shot with less and I would not be terribly uncomfortable if I actually needed to use it for something more serious. So great camera for everyday shooters, soccer moms and I think you could even get away with it for theater. It did remarkably well in a museum I was at with similar and very dynamic lighting. If you really need low light though and especially if the subjects are moving, this is probably not your answer but for many other needs, even those who have other cameras, this is a great addition and an incredible value. I've shown this to my camera friends and a couple have already gone out to buy them. These people are all DLSR owners and very competent photographers.
