The player supports five lossless audio formats including APE, FLAC, ALAC, WMA and WAV. Plus, it also features master copy class audio playback.

The player has 8GB of flash memory and the microSD card slot supports up to 64GB of memory expansion. It offers multiple digital and analog audio output options as well. The built-in rechargeable battery recharges via USB and provides up to 10 hours of continuous playback. The player is also equipped with a 2.4" TFT color display and adjustable circuit hardware for bass and treble controls.

Supports Five Main Lossless Music Formats
The X3 supports APE, FLAC, ALAC, WMA and WAV music formats. This should ensure that music lovers won't have to be bothered with incompatible formats since even the Apple-exclusive ALAC format is supported.
HD Music at Master Copy Class
The X3 can support master copy music at 192kHz/24-bit for high-quality HD music enjoyment.
Lightweight & Portable Design
With compact dimensions and a weight of only 4.3 oz (122 g), the X3 is ultra-portable so you can enjoy your music anywhere.
10 Hours of Playback Time & Standard USB Smart Charging
The X3's built-in 3.7V lithium polymer battery has a 3000mAh capacity that guarantees up to 10 hours of playback time per charge. Plus, standard USB smart charging technology means you can recharge the device using a PC USB port, a USB adapter or a mobile power charger. And, once you get the firmware version 1.0 upgrade, the device should support 12-15 hours of playback.
High-Quality DAC Chip
The X3 doesn't use the DAC function of its main controller chip. Instead, it features a professional WOLFSON WM8740 DAC chip, which has been used in the Hi-Fi REGA Saturn CD player. It's also used in other Hi-Fi audio players from Sony and Astell&Kern.
High Dynamic & Current Output Amplifier
Similarly to the DAC chip, the X3 doesn't use the amplifier function of the main controller chip. Instead, it employs a separate AD8397 amplifier chip, which has high current output power. When boosting headphones at 16 ohms, the output power can run up to 300mA. The high current is also responsible for a warmer timbre and flexible bass effect similar to an A-class amplifier.
Bass & Treble Adjustable Circuit Hardware
While most portable music players use DSP technology and software to adjust audio settings for bass and treble, the X3 uses bass and treble adjustable circuit hardware resulting from analogous circuits, which provide more natural sound adjustments that won't influence the sounds in other frequency ranges.
Born Specifically for Music Appreciation
Although the X3 is powerful enough to run an Android operating system, it is made solely for music enjoyment. This means that there is no video playing or picture displaying function. However, it does display classification, album info, cover art and lyrics when possible. It also supports gapless function, boost volume and maximum volume settings for more convenient music enjoyment.
Multiple Output Options
The X3 includes a headphone jack, a line out audio jack and a digital coaxial audio output. This allows you to use the device as an HD music player or as an analog signal source to boost headphones after connecting to an amplifier. You can also use it as a powerful DAC and connect it to an audio decoder through the digital coaxial output. There's a USB 2.0 port as well.
Display & Exterior Design
The X3 features a 2.4" color TFT LCD screen with 320 x 240 resolution. The player also features an aluminum alloy cover with a button trim panel, a plastic shell and buttons with a metal CD grain.
Memory & Expandable Memory
The X3 has 8GB of internal storage capacity with the actual available space closer to 7.8GB. This can be expanded by up to 64GB when you use the microSD card slot.
Independent Charging Indicator
The double charge indicator features a red light that indicates the device is charging and a green light that signals the X3 is fully charged. The unit's display features a battery gauge indicator as well.

When you couple the X3 with any of the V-Moda Crossfade headphones... the first thing you'll say about the sound is WOW! This is the same word that my friends said when I have them try this combination. The sound is just incredible... very detailed and would make any iPod sound cheap! I've decided to give away my old iPod which can never produce this kind of sound quality.

I bought this player for its top-notch fidelity and ability to play 24-bit/96Khz files, and it doesn't disappoint in that respect. However, I was unable to find anything in the software or the user guide about using playlists on the device. When you have a 32 GB SD card with hundreds or even thousands of tracks in the player , you really need a way to manage that music, so the lack of playlist support is a pretty serious flaw to me.

Comments about Fiio X3 Portable Music Player:

As Fiio recommended, I tried to upgrade the included software when I first received my X3. Fiio's directions managed to be incomplete, redundant, and contradictory all at once. I emailed B&H, but they couldn't explain the prcoess either (who can blame them if the mfg. can't explain?). While I debated returning it, Fiio updated their web site a couple weeks later. The new directions, supplemented by visits to a couple technical sites to enact what Fiio was directing, allowed a successful upgrade, and I was ready to rock. The unit sounded great--and then the headphone jack failed. Ironically, this portable player has never been outside my living room. I wonder how well it could hold up in portable use. With the delays in software updating, the 30 day window for exchange is past. I am waiting to see if B&H will take pity on me, but meanwhile I would say this player promises but does not deliver.

I bought this play high quality FLAC files while riding my motorcycle. The availability of a Line Out plug gives great performance in my amplified audio system. The instructions are a little flaky in Chinese/English, but this more than overcome by the excellent offerings on YouTube. Glad I bought it, and would recommend it to you too.

Comments about Fiio X3 Portable Music Player:

Sound quality is great for a device in this price class. The ability to play 24-bit/192kHz files is fantastic. I'm somewhat of an audiophile, but not enough to spend a lot of money on the hobby.Unfortunately, the interface is a bit backwards and indicative of the developers' general lack of exposure to common UI concepts of the past 15 years. I do not blame them as they are based in China and they are a bit behind in that area. The physical button layout is weird and unnatural, but you might get used to it after a while (though I don't think it will ever be second-nature to me). I CAN navigate within a folder of music without taking the x3 out of my pocket to look at the screen, which is good enough. I am using Firmware 3.0 (the latest at this point).Overall, I believe this is the best value in an "audiophile" DAP. You could pay more (a lot more) for something nicer, but this does the job for me, personally. The controls and a few bugs in the OS are the only thing holding it down. It's also kind of ugly, but that can be advantageous when you are out and about in public :)

Having owned other players, this sets the standard. The sound is an awesome listening experience with my Woodees earbuds. Very sleek and compact, hard to believe it produces such great sound. Could have more internal memory, but the extra 64GB card I purchased has opened the door wide.

The favorites and cataloging need to be simplified. However, getting the music on it is a snap.

I haven't hesitated to show if off and recommend it to my friends. Worth every penny.

Comments about Fiio X3 Portable Music Player:

I use this as my daily music player for FLAC files.

              Pros:
-No audible noise floor with sensitive balanced armature IEMs. Other players I've had from Apple and Sandisk in the past have had very audible noise floors which makes balanced armature IEMs unusable.
-Came with screen protector already applied and perfectly so.
-Device already fitted in silicone case.
-After firmware update, can be used as a USB DAC to be used with a computer.
-No audible noise floor when used as a USB DAC even with sensitive balanced armature IEMs, this is rare for USB DACs.
              -Plays all music formats.
              -Supports 64GB MicroSD cards.
-Firmware updates are easy to install.
-Has great physical buttons and the button layout is decent and convenient.
-UI is fast, intuitive and clear.
-Battery performance is as advertised, which is 10 hours of playback.

              Cons:
-Gapless playback did not work until firmware update.

As the headline says, this is what a portable media player should sound like! I am on the constant move, and working in different areas. The sound quality of this player is bar-none. The player physically feels sturdy and has a solid weight and feel to it. The interface is quick and easy to learn and navigate. Only wish that the memory held more, depending on your file type you could run out of space real fast. Looking beyond the memory, you cannot go wrong with this player, a must have if you are serious about the music you listen to.

Comments about Fiio X3 Portable Music Player:

With latest firmware this device can be used as both a player (with all advantages of its formats support) and a USB DAC.

It's nice being able to listen to the music, then connect USB cable to the computer, playback stops and the computer's sound output switches to the headphones because I have configured USB DAC as having higher priority than all other output devices in Pulseaudio/Phonon settings (I use KDE on Linux -- no idea how it looks in Windows or MacOS). This is similar to how on radios the sound switches from speakers to headphones when they are plugged in.

If the device is in the storage mode when it is connected over USB, it is seen just like any other player, a device with files, separately internal flash and microSD card, so files can be managed by copying or using rsync.

The main disadvantage is the lack of playlist support, playback simply follows directories or categories, however repeat and shuffle are still available.

Comments about Fiio X3 Portable Music Player:

WOW! WOW! WOW! For portable music listening I've always used an ipod. Recently I've become much more interested in hearing more from my music. I read some reviews and recommendations on various sites and decided to get one of these X3's. Well, holy moly! Using FLAC or AIFF files on this thing has really allowed me to hear things in music that I've been missing. There's a bigger sound stage, more detail, clearer sound, and just subtlety that is now revealed. I just wish I had gotten this sooner. Pair it with a great pair of headphones and BOOM! Personal concert hall.

Comments about Fiio X3 Portable Music Player:

Does sound a little better (specially mids and low end). I am not a bass head. I'm a High Freq guy? Anyways, do have to set the treble to highest and bass to lowest. BUT the output through the headphones and line out still continues to be 20Hz-20Khz, so I guess the only way you can hear the HD tracks is through the optical out, correct? Which kind of defeats the purposes of a portable player. But still considering all, it's the cheapest and best at what it does!

                      Pros:
                      - Finally can play (not always hear) music with higher frequency than CD's.
                      - Plays all/almost all music formats.
                      - Can install up to standard 64GB microSD card.
                      - Internal 8GB
                      - Can be upgraded, hopefully by the community also.

                      Cons:
                      - You will not hear higher than 20KHz through headphones or line out (back to my Sansa Clip X).
                      - Buttons and interface is a little behind the curve (back to my Sansa Clip X).
                      - Heavy

I preiously wrote reviews of this device as a music player. Now I've had the time to connect it up to my Mac Book Pro in its DAC mode. This is accessed in the System Setting menu by changing USB Mode from Storage to DAC. This allows you to play digital music stored on your computer through the X3.

I connected the X3 to a USB 3.0 port and checked the Audio Midi settings and sure enough it was already set to 192KHz 24Bit. Played some 192/24 files and OMG it is fantastic.

I have been using an Audioengine D1, but it is limited to 96KHz on USB. Theoretically it could do 192KHz with an optical output, but the Mac Core Audio limits it to 96Khz no matter what you do.

The X3 can do 192/24 via USB and it works very well.

Audio quality is very good with FLAC files and a decent set of headphones.

Setup was relatively easy; just follow the instructions very carefully and make sure the external memory card is formatted as FAT32. The firmware update also went smoothly, and the new DAC functionality and setup (be sure to follow the instructions for Windows 8) worked as advertised.

At $[$]this is a no-brainer. Solid build. Decent interface. And amazing ability. Use it for all my listening needs. From quite listening sessions with good headphones to flights/car travel. The amp and the DAC both beat the socks off anything that iPods/iPhones do AND everything else in this price bracket. Can't think of any negatives - other than - finding HD music is tough. But a little digging can sort it out. So get one of these - and re-build your music library. Re burn your CD collection to FLAC. GIGO - garbage in - garbage out. Start collecting great sounding music you love @ 192khz/24bit - as opposed to 44khz/16bit 128kbps mp3s - and it will change the game.

Comments about Fiio X3 Portable Music Player:

First, a brief profile of the author. I'm an "aspiring" audiophile, rather than an aficionado, so I try to use good equipment but with realistic expectations, due to my needs and budget.

The portable music player I was using until purchasing the X3 was a popular Sony MP3 player, from their NWZ series, coupled with a pair of Etymotic HF5 headphones.

The first impressions of using the X3:

                                    1) The level of details is much higher. Any recording imperfections are also much better reproduced (as expected). Just to give you an idea: in some of the recordings, including the samples that come with the player, the microphone line noise was very obvious. At first, I thought that the X3 had an issue but then I checked and I could vaguely hear the same noise while using other ways of playing the same files.

                                    2) The bass details and the dynamic range (bass to high) sound good to me, much much better than on the little Sony player. I used the same files on both players to evaluate this.

                                    3) The mid and high range sounded clear to me. On the other player, the passages with intense highs sounded hard to distinguish.

                                    4) After 2 hours of listening to music at approximately half the max volume there was no ear fatigue, unlike with the other player.

                                    5) The X3 is very big and heavy compared with the other player so it's not good for using at the gym, for example.

                                    6) The X3's user interface is rudimentary - somewhat slow, unpolished and simplistic. There's no way to search. The file names scroll very slowly, even with the latest firmware. The buttons are somewhat difficult to use while in the dark, especially if the X3's cover is on it, although this might get better with practice.

                                    7) Obviously, in addition to the X3's capabilities, the quality of the listening experience will also be affected by the quality of the recordings and by the headphones. I could only experiment with the first, by playing high quality mp3s vs flacs and music from different labels. The biggest difference I found so far was due to the quality of the recordings, rather than the file format (surprising to me).

                                    8) The player froze twice in the first two days of using it. First with the firmware the device came with and second with the latest firmware. This is very hard to swallow so I'm considering returning the device if this happens again.

                                    9) The user documentation has some issues and requires editing by a native English speaker. The X3 documentation appears to be unavailable on Fiio's web site (!).

                                    10) Getting the player to work with a 64GB microSD xc card was difficult - the card must be formatted using either the FAT32 format with a 32kB cluster size, using a formatting tool found on the web, or in the NTFS format. Sometimes these cards arrive preformatted in other formats, such as exFAT, and there's no documentation from Fiio to help explain what needs to be done. This makes getting those cards to work with the X3 a time consuming exercise for the technically knowleadgeable and non-trivial, or even impossible, for the less technical users.
