The red Nikon COOLPIX L620 Digital Camera is a compact point-and-shoot that features an 18.1 megapixel 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor and EXPEED C2 image processor to produce high resolution still imagery and HD 1080i video at 60 fps with impressive low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 3200. Benefitting from the performance of the image sensor is the built-in NIKKOR 14x optical zoom lens that provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 25-350mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto-length perspectives to suit working in almost any situation. Lens-shift type Vibration Reduction aids the zoom range of this lens by minimizing the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when working in dimly-lit conditions and with greater zoom magnifications. Also contributing to producing sharper imagery is a comfortable grip design and Motion Blur Reduction.

For bright, clear viewing, image playback, and for configuring camera settings, a 3.0" 460k-dot LCD monitor is available and the rear and top panel of the camera are intuitively designed, placing all camera controls within easy reach. To creatively enhance imagery, a range of built-in Special Effects can be applied to both stills and movies, including Monochrome, Sepia, and Selective Color. For automatic control over exposure settings, an Easy Auto Mode can be utilized to allow for the camera to determine all exposure settings or, alternatively, Scene Auto Mode can be used to provide 18 different scene modes to choose from depending on the specific conditions. Furthermore, Nikon's Smart Portrait System, Smile Timer, and Target Finding AF will balance focus and camera settings based on a detected subject to ensure proper exposure and sharpness.

18.1MP BSI CMOS Sensor and 1080i HD Video
The 18.1 megapixel 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor is capable of recording high resolution imagery that is suitable for both online sharing as well as printing. The BSI (backside illumination) sensor design, along with the EXPEED C2 image processor, provides notable low-light quality with a maximum sensitivity of ISO 3200. The sensor also supports 1080i HD video recording at 60 fps with stereo sound, which is easily accessible via a dedicated movie button on the rear of the camera. An HS Movie function can also be utilized to allow playback at either half or twice the speed of the normal recording for dramatic effect and an HDMI port is integrated into the L620's design to facilitate direct playback on an HDTV, with support for the CEC feature for HDMI that permits playback control using the TV's remote control.
NIKKOR 14x Optical Zoom Lens and VR Image Stabilization
The integration of a genuine glass NIKKOR lens builds on the quality afforded by the imaging sensor. The 14x optical zoom covers wide-angle to telephoto-length perspectives with a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 25-350mm, making this camera suitable for capturing almost any type of scene with ease. This lens is benefitted with the inclusion of optical Vibration Reduction, which works to reduce the appearance of camera shake and blur that can become increasingly notable when shooting in low-light conditions or at the telephoto end of the zoom range. Also contributing to sharper imagery is a large ergonomic grip and Motion Blur Reduction; both of which strive to minimize the effects of camera shake while shooting for greater clarity.
Scene Auto Selector and Easy Auto Mode
The L620 is specifically designed to allow you to focus on being in the moment and photographing rather than concentrating solely on how to photograph the moment. Easy Auto Mode will automatically control all camera settings for true point-and-shoot functionality. More specialized in approach, Scene Auto Selector will automatically assign one of 18 different Scene Modes to optimize the camera's settings to those that are best suited the type of scene you are photographing in. You can also select from these Scene Modes on your own, to give a more creative appearance to your imagery.
Other Camera Features
  • A large 3.0" 460k-dot LCD monitor is available for clear live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation.
  • The built-in pop-up flash can be used to provide additional illumination to dimly-lit scenes.
  • Consecutive shot combining technology automatically records multiple exposures into a single frame to help reduce image blur and noise to benefit working in low-light conditions.
  • High-speed consecutive shooting modes are ideal for capturing fast-moving subject matter.
  • A range of built-in Special Effects, including Monochrome, Sepia, and Selective Color, can be applied to creatively enhance imagery.
  • Nikon's Smart Portrait System and Target Finding AF systems help to ensure that sharp focus is maintained and that exposure is properly balanced depending on your intended subject
  • Smile timer (BSS) mode records five consecutive exposures and then automatically selects the frame featuring the best smile.
  • Helping to reduce red-eye, eye color correction can alleviate any coloration in eyes from the on-camera flash for up to 12 people and five pets (cats and dogs) within a single image.
  • Compatible with Eye-Fi wireless memory cards.

Features galor at the press of a button, but which button do I push? And which mode do I choose? It can be confusing. Do I use sunset or dusk? Which one is best for indoor performaces? It will take some practise and experimenting to figure out which is best for the situation.
Pushing the shutter button halfway is tricky - too easy to take a photo when trying to focus.
I photographed a concert and recorded some of it and even zoomed in and with low light without flash, the photos and video are great quality.
I have already recommended it to people and will continue to do so. It is a great camera with lots of features at a modest price.

This is my 5th Nikon digital camera over the past 10 yrs, including two digital SLR bodies I use for better photography. Many times I can't or don't want to haul the SLR bodies and lenses, so I like having a small point-and-shoot camera, too. I got this L620 to replace an L3 I bought in '08. I wanted a camera with better low light performance than the L3, image stablization, and additional user control. A P7800 would've been ideal, but I didn't want to spend that much money, so this was an admitted compromise.

I have yet to fully test the camera, having only shot about 50 images, and only shot one short video, but so far I am unimpressed. The biggest problem is the color saturation and balance. Many of the images I've taken in open shade or under cloudy conditions using the auto features are "washed out," unlike with the L3. It doesn't appear to be an overexposure tendency, an issue I had with my D40. Rather, it may be the auto white balance or even the CMOS sensor itself, as some reds have a magenta cast, too. (See attached image. Actual leaves were bright crimson.) I certainly don't want to have to manually adjust lots of images on my computer to make them look right, but so far, about half of what I shot needs adjustment. The funny thing is that the images look good on the monitor, but once the exposure is recorded, the replay shows obvious differences. Indoor photos under artificial light don't seem to have the same problem.

The camera has a maximum resolution of 4896x3672 (18M pixels, 5MB file size) which is much greater than I will likely need. For my purposes, the 4M pixels (2272x1704, 1 MB file size) option is what I will likely shoot at most often. So far, I've only tried 8M and 4M. All modes but one shoot at a 4:3 aspect ratio, and that other mode shoots at 16:9. I would prefer an option to shoot at the 3:2 ratio used by my SLRs, since that transfers directly to the most common 4x6 paper size without cropping.

Like the L3 before, the auto program tends to choose low ISO sensitivities and slow shutter speeds. I tried shooting my dogs playing outdoors in open shade and all the motion was blurred, as the camera chose ISO 125 and a shutter speed of 1/50 (f/3.9). I have not tried the Sports mode, yet, but I could manually up the ISO to 400 and sometimes get a faster shutter speed. The L620 doesn't offer shutter or aperture priority.

The 14x zoom range is nice, but any zooming in still mode requires 2-3 sec. for the autofocus to readjust, so you can't really follow a subject by zooming when taking photos. (However, zooming in video mode does not seem to immediately throw the camera out of focus.)

The camera comes with two AA alkaline batteries that were exhausted in only 50 shots (10% of which used flash). I have yet to fully test the rechargable Ni-MH cells I bought. I like the fact that it takes AA cells, as it is easy to carry spares, but if you can only get 50-100 shots per pair of batteries, that would be annoying.

I also bought the recommended 16GB SDHC card. At 4 megapixels, that will hold ~9,000 images, or up to ~30 min. of video.

The camera arrived with a small defect (surface nick) in the monitor screen, but it doesn't affect performance.

Comments about COOLPIX L620 Digital Camera (Black):

I commnly take pictures with DSLR cameras, but when I was going to travel overseas, so the conserve space I needed a good pocket camera. All the point and shoot cameras I have had in the past, I have never been quite happy with. I was looking for a camera that wasn't too small (which many point and shoots are too small) so I would be able to hold it without trouble. The camera fit the bill and is still able to easily fit in my pocket. Another problem I would have with my previous point and shoot cameras is that the UI is always clunky and not friendly. This camera is super friendly to use. I wasn't quite qesting for a camera that could shoot video, but this one does it almost flawlessly with how clear the image is.

I use the camera for casual picture-taking, for "record" pictures, and for carrying around "just in case." Its point-and-shoot mode is extremely simple to use. I think picture quality is excellent, although I have not done any quantifiable experiments. The optical zoom range is astonishing. Its convenience and quality will likely cause me to leave my SLR at home.

Comments about COOLPIX L620 Digital Camera (Black):

Features galor at the press of a button, but which button do I push? And which mode do I choose? It can be confusing. Do I use sunset or dusk? Which one is best for indoor performaces? It will take some practise and experimenting to figure out which is best for the situation.
Pushing the shutter button halfway is tricky - too easy to take a photo when trying to focus.
I photographed a concert and recorded some of it and even zoomed in and with low light without flash, the photos and video are great quality.
I have already recommended it to people and will continue to do so. It is a great camera with lots of features at a modest price.

Comments about COOLPIX L620 Digital Camera (Red):

While I was thoroughly impressed with this little camera in the beginning, I have to withdraw my recommendation because of its ability to eat batteries. It also has absolutely no low battery warning to give you time to change them before it dies. It also has the habit of just freezing up when the batteries are almost gone, giving you the impression something is wrong with it. It is sad as I liked the camera otherwise.

I haven't put it through all the paces yet, but so far this has been the best pocket camera I've owned. I've had a variety over the years, trying to keep it cheap since it will most likely be abused. I have a DSLR for the quality shots, but always want to have a little one to carry around. It has taken some excellent low-light shots which weren't so great on my last camera. I'm happy with this one. My only complaint is the lack of viewfinder which is so common these days in the smaller cameras. You just can't see the screen in bright sunlight in any of them.
