The Onkyo TX-8020 Stereo Receiver features a full discrete amp configuration that provides 50W per channel. It supports Onkyo's WRAT (Wide Range Amp Technology) to ensure natural audio fidelity across a wide frequency range. The receiver also uses a massive EI transformer to drive the speakers accurately at all times - even under heavy loads. For connectivity, the TX-8020 features five analog audio inputs. There's a phono input, an analog audio output and a headphone jack as well. The receiver's other features include an FM/AM tuner with 40 station presets and a single-cable RI system that enables limited control of an RI-ready component.

WRAT (Wide Range Amp Technology)
Onkyo's WRAT (Wide Range Amp Technology) preserves natural audio fidelity across a very wide frequency range. It includes low-negative-feedback amp topology for clear, true-to-life sound; closed ground-loop circuits to reduce distortion; and high instantaneous-current capability to counter impedance fluctuations from the speakers and sudden dynamic gains in music and movie soundtracks.
Discrete Amplifier Design with Quality Parts
Unlike amplifiers based on integrated circuit (IC) boards, Onkyo's discrete amplifiers incorporate hand-selected audio-grade parts into their design. The TX-8020 has fully discrete output stage circuitry with heavy-duty transistors to control running temperatures, lower distortion and increase the life of the product.
High-Current, Low-Impedance Drive
Although your loudspeakers may be rated at 4, 6, or 8 ohms, regular operation will see that resistance spike and plunge for short periods of time. This can place up to 10 times the usual load on your amplifier, and if it can't meet demand, sound quality will suffer audibly. Onkyo's high-current, low-impedance design uses a massive EI transformer to drive your speakers accurately at all times, even under heavy loads.
Independent Bass, Treble & Balance Controls
Bass, treble and balance controls are very useful for optimizing the tonal characteristics of your source material (particularly when the recording is less than perfect), as well as allowing you to correct for the acoustics of your listening space and the frequency response of your speakers. These carefully designed circuits let you fine-tune the sound to your own taste, with zero loss in perceived audio quality.
Wide Selection of Audio Inputs
For many people, the TX-8020 will serve as the heart of a central home entertainment system. To best equip it for this role, Onkyo has included five analog audio inputs to connect your TV, CD player, an AirPlay dock for iPod/iPhone/iPad (such as the DS-A5) and even your personal computer. There's also a moving-magnet phono stage for your choice of turntable, so you can enjoy your vinyl collection.
FM/AM Tuner with 40 Memory Presets
The TX-8020 includes an FM/AM tuner complete with RDS station information in areas that support these broadcasts. The good news is that changing channels is no longer a painful ordeal. You just have to scan once and save up to 40 stations into the preset memory, with 8-character naming capability for each.
High-Quality A/B Speaker Terminals
The TX-8020 features two sets of banana-plug-compatible speaker terminals to enable the connection of speaker pair A and speaker pair B in a multi-room audio setup. The receiver is designed to drive either a single pair of speakers rated at 4-16 ohms or two pairs of 8-16 ohms speakers, allowing you to enjoy the same audio source in two rooms at once.
Remote Interactive Makes System Control Easy
A single-cable RI system enables limited control of an RI-ready component--such as an Onkyo CD player or the optional DS-A5 dock--using the TX-8020 remote. This makes the process of cueing up music and video easier. Connect the DS-A5 and the receiver will automatically power up, select the appropriate input and commence playback as soon as you touch the AirPlay icon on your mobile device or iTunes-equipped computer.

Have had several Onkyo receivers of similar design and one of their desktop mini systems. All have exhibited great build quality and sound, this is no different. There are a couple of other receivers near this price point, but Onkyo builds for the best quality sound, not marketing specs. If you want to claim your receiver has higher watts then get the Sony for forty bucks less (if you care to believe their specs). Otherwise, get the Onky for the best sound under two hundred bucks and enjoy it! In fairness, many people can not tell the difference in sound between amplifiers, I can!

The electronic design of the Onkyo is a bit different than my previous models as it uses encoders rather than mechanical potentiometers for the volume, bass and treble controls. That is good as it SHOULD mean a more reliable product. It also means that the bass and treble can be controlled from the remote which is convenient.

Am running Klipsch Icon KB-15 speakers in a small second bedroom. Source material varies from CD, FM (classical), Sirius and occasionally Pandora. I turn down the treble on the Onkyo one notch and boost the base up two notches (sometimes three) for the best sound in my room and with the Klipsch speakers. There is no loudness compensation, which is no great loss to me.

The amplifier on this receiver is fairly neutral and the bass control does not overly add warmth, just a bit of oomph at the very bottom end of my speakers capability. Actually, that is the way it should work.

The FM tuner section is every bit as sensitive and sounds as good as my previous Onkyo's, which was always very good. Some manufacturers ignore the FM sound quality, but Onkyo does not.

The mechanical feel of this product is actually a bit better than the previous similar models. In particular, it has actual binding posts for the speaker connections as opposed to the oft used spring tensioned connectors....big improvement. The remote is clean and pleasant to hold and use.

I like it, can not select 4.5 or that would be my rating. Will not rate it a five because their are better receivers out there, but in fairness they do cost considerably more.

So for less than 200 buckaroos, this would be my recommendation.

B&H promptly shipped my order and it arrived quickly. The receiver was double boxed for shipment (nice). B&H is a classy outfit that doesn't skimp!

I purchased the TX-8020 to replace my old Mitsubishi DA-R8, a 45 watt/ch receiver I got in 1983. I wanted the convenience of a remote, and my research indicated that the Onkyo was the best quality option for a simple 2 ch receiver. Not even close to the old receiver. The Onkyo, at 50 watts/ch needed to be cranked to 3/4 volume to produce the same relative sound volume as the Mitsu at 1/3 on the knob. And the quality of the Onkyo's sound did not compare to the old Mitsu., as it was very thin and lacking in depth. Sound processors are not what they used to be I guess.Consequently the Onkyo was returned to B&H, a store which by the way is an absolute pleasure to deal with. Visiting the store is a great experience, and the employees are all very helpful.

Comments about Onkyo TX-8020 Stereo Receiver:

I've had it less than a week & used it only 3 times for radio. I use it for FM radio. It was easy to set up. Easy to change stations. I don't know how to use the preset or remote yet. The reception is good enough. I need to use a FM roof antenna to get FM stations where I live.

Was looking for a replacement for the living room stereo and after reading the reviews I chose this one. I wasn't expecting much, but when I turned it on I thought the sound was great and it seems to be built well. Feels solid. I would recommend it! Couldn't be happier.

I'm a two-channel, plain vanilla stereo listener. When my 45 year old receiver recently called it quits, I contacted B&H for advice. Their sales associate directed me to the Onkyo TX-8020. It is a straight forward unit with all the essentials, and satisfies my needs completely. It even has a phono input and banana jacks for my loudspeaker connections! What a rare combination.

Thanks B&H for your advice, and thanks to Onkyo for designing such a great two channel receiver.

This was an update to a 30 year old receiver that was showing a slight problem. This is a perfect bare bones receiver for home use. Not an extreme amount of power that is just right at times. Sounds good at low volumes as well as high volumes. Simple minimal controls. Easy to setup and use.

a great concept, simple design focused solely on sound quality; no extras, no surround, no wireless; result - low price; great sound, the THD (total harmonic distortion) is one of the lowest on the market in any price range; i use to to play CDs, watch movies, and listen a classic rock radio station; i like the output for a subwoofer, and the overall simplicity

Comments about Onkyo TX-8020 Stereo Receiver:
