Recently, many couples are supplementing their photography packages with equally artistic wedding videos. This new breed of wedding videography is wedding photography in motion. As a result, there is a new call in this billon-dollar-a-year industry for filmmakers and cinematographers with an artistic eye and talent for composition.

In this 3 hour seminar, Kelly Mena will demonstrate what goes into creating a visually artistic and cinematic wedding video that even families will want to watch. From the ins-and-outs of filming a wedding to how to market yourself, this program will emphasize using creativity as a means of maintaining a business through art.

Kelly will begin with a discussion on using one’s artistic eye to capture the day, including composition, camera choice, camera functions and tricks, and using one’s environment to enhance imagery. The lectures will also take into consideration the importance of editing and choice of music in setting the tone and presentation of footage. Finally, the seminar will get down and dirty about marketing yourself properly. Do you want to freelance for yourself? Work for a studio? What kind of clients do you want to appeal to? These questions will lead the audience toward the style and type of business they are interested in pursuing, whether it be a full time studio of their own or freelance work.

This workshop applies to photographers interested in expanding to video, filmmakers, camera operators, and wedding videographers looking for a means of developing their work and business.
As we walk the Highline, David and other B&H Mavens will be on hand to help with the lessons learned from the earlier days class. This is a great time to learn camera menu navigation and modes in the field under tutelage!

The 15 Features of Your DSLR That Every Photographer Should Know

Speaker: Jeff Cable
Date: Thursday, April 25, 2013
Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Event Type: Photography
To follow up on one of B&H's most successful video trainings, taught by Jeff Cable, which was titled "The 15 features of Photoshop every photographer should know", Jeff is back to teach "The 15 features of your DSLR that you need to know". If you have always wanted to expose some pinholes but were never quite sure how to get started, this is your chance to do it with a group of like-minded photographers. And if you’re a pinhole veteran, join us for some new tips as well as the adventure of joining in Worldwide Pinhole Day festivities. Why try pinhole? A pinhole camera takes making a photograph back to basics and requires you to think and see in a different way. As photography equipment has gone more and more high tech, an increasing number of photographers are reaching back to old, traditional techniques, both as a way of touching history, and also as a way of recharging their creative batteries. Pinhole is one of those traditional techniques, and one that is easily accessible. In this Photo Walk we will go out on the streets of The Big Apple, and just like other pinholers will be doing all across the world on this day, we’ll do some pinhole shooting ourselves, accompanied by our B&H pinhole mavens. And after the day is over, you’ll be eligible to enter the images you made in our Pinhole Photography contest for the chance to win one of three prizes.

Website Critique With Squarespace

Speaker: Natalie Gourvitch, Squarespace
Date: Monday, April 29, 2013
Time: 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Event Type: Photography
Squarespace will be hosting an open website critique where you can get real-time feedback on your website and learn from other photographers’ websites.
What many artists and artisans have had success with is to bypass the middleman and market their work directly to the people on the art fair circuit. The advantages are numerous, unlike commercial jobs or gallery shows where you have to wait to be paid; With an art fair, you can make a picture today and sell it this weekend, cash in hand. It can be a great, extra revenue stream that you can partake in a much or as little as you like, but it can also have some pitfalls you would rather avoid.

In this lecture, Deborah will discuss both sides of the coin to help you figure out if art fairs are for you, and if they are, how to make them work for you.

Some of the topics Deborah will discuss:

How to determine if Art Fairs are the right venues for you and your work

How to find the shows, and how to determine if they are “good“ shows for you

How to apply effectively (the best shows are highly competitive, often getting ten times as many applicants as they have spots)

How to present your work, and how to create a display

Effective sales techniques & marketing strategies for your work for these venues - How to be prepared for anything a show might throw at you

How to handle the media and promote your work

Being a responsible representative of the photography community

A social media presence and a web site (or two) are required just to keep up. The best way to separate from the crowd is to develop, promote and disseminate a personal project. Each project is unique to the individual, but successful projects that carry over from the personal to the professional realm showcase the photographer’s skills and help end-users know the photographer’s personality.

David is going to take you through the evolution of his project “Foreclosed Dreams.” He started with a vague idea and ended up with a body of work that has been featured in numerous publications, exhibitions and web-site profiles including the N.Y. Times Lensblog and the ABC News website. He has also made money off the project while using it to get more work.

David worked to make sure his projects dovetailed with larger political and cultural themes, ensuring wide dissemination of the work. Though David will be talking specifically about his“Foreclosed Dreams” project, from the start to the present, he will draw onhis decades of experience working as a self-employed photographer to share his larger strategies for developing and disseminating the all important personal project.

In this program, David Brommer will cover the basic concepts of composition as established by the masters of the Renaissance. Commencing with the classic rule of thirds and leaping into theories of color and balance, David will touch upon a range of topics, including image construction, positive and negative space, as well as other advanced composition. General shooting questions like, “Is the shot better if it’s a horizontal or vertically composed?” and conceptual ideas such as integrating theme and subject context will be explored. Another factor to be considered is color vs. black and white, and how these two treatments can influence the visual impact of the photograph. Just when your head is spinning with new cropping and composing ideas, David will demonstrate special shooting techniques including how to create a pan blur, zooming the lens during exposure and low angle (worms eye view) shooting tips.

This seminar is designed for anyone wishing to take their photography to the next level by learning how to frame and compose their image according to simple visual rules. It will matter not if your digital or film, single lens reflex or point and shoot, good composition is the first consideration when making a good photograph. Henri Cartier-Bresson said, “To photograph is to hold ones breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It’s at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy.” Understanding composition and utilizing it is an invaluable skill to mastering the image.
.

David recently contributed to a Peachpitt press book, "Composition: From Snapshots to Great Shots" that is available at B&H and fine bookstores and was also featured on the B&H InSights blog too.

Back to Basics: Wedding Photography Sponsored by Canon

Speaker: Joe Buissink
Date: Tuesday, May 7, 2013
Time: 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Event Type: Photography

Joe’s photography is about capturing the moments, and the essence of the person in those moments. His work redefines wedding photography, and has been described as “Fine Art”. Joe began photographing weddings because he was drawn to the open and honest display of emotions. He considers himself a ‘seeker of truth’ at weddings - searching intently for those rare and intimate moments between loved ones. This search has not only defined Joe’s style of photography, but has also guided his passion and has become the driving force behind what Joe considers his greatest obsession.

In Joe's own words:
"Over the last 15 years, I’ve had the extreme honor of photographing weddings for couples from all over the world and each one of them proves for me, time and time again, what a wonderful gift this has been. Each and every wedding I’ve photographed has given me the opportunity to bear witness and play a part in the most near and dear moments in a couple’s life together. The depth of that realization still overwhelms me today."

Not really an epiphany right? Well to Peter, it is the challenge he is up against everyday and he has found that it’s not a straightforward as it may seem.

First off, when shooting a headshot you’ll have the barrel of your camera in close proximity to your subject, making them well aware of that fact the nanosecond you point it in their general direction. Everyone reacts differently to being in front of a camera especially if they know it is pinpointed on their face. There is no rhyme or reason as to why some behave cool as cucumbers and others seem to instantly have an outer body experience.

Our job as photographers is to not only take a technically beautiful image, but also to coach our subjects in order to bring the best out of them. Peter has always considered the job twofold, one part photographic technique and the other a flurry of constant photographer banter. The proper use of both allows the photographer and subject to capture a headshot that both people can be proud of.

So how is it done? That is precisely what Peter will discuss during this lecture.

Topics will include:

•The Equipment
•The Light
•The Capture
•The Workflow
Learning to control your environment, rather than letting your environment control you, is the way to be a more competent photographer. Wouldn’t the ability to turn daytime into nighttime and nighttime into day make you feel you could handle any environment you’ll find yourself shooting in? This workshop will soon have you controlling your environment using off-camera flash photography.

Join Cliff Hausner in this all-day, two-part workshop covering the art of flash-to-ambient ratio photography. You will overpower daylight with your flash to hide backgrounds, or under power the flash to add a sweet fill light. Cliff will break down this practice so participants will understand how light works, but also how it works in relation to shooting outdoors.

This workshop is in two parts (and they must be registered for separately):

Part 1: From 10am to noon, Cliff will be in the B&H Event Space, covering basic lighting concepts for overall looks. Light shaping tools will be examined: how they work, and why a shooter would choose one over another, and in what environmental conditions they are applied.

Part 2: From 1:30 - 4pm the workshop moves outdoors, where participants will cover the techniques learned in the morning session. Portable, lightweight packs and Profoto AIR remotes will be used to fire wirelessly. Small groups will ensure you’ll get hands-on time and instructor attention in this session.

***For Part 1, a full classroom of attendants are welcome. For Part 2, there will be a maximum or 25 people participating, (5 per group, 1 instructor with each group). Each group will have one Profoto AcuteB battery pack and a Sekonic light meter. The morning and afternoon sessions must be signed up for separately – and you must attend the morning session (arriving on time) to be able to attend the afternoon session.

Register here for Part 1.

Participants must bring a DSLR camera with a hotshoe for the afternoon session.
David will lead a photo tour through the beautiful Bronx Zoo, with plenty of photo instruction and tips along the way.

Whether you are looking to brush up on your wildlife photography skills in preparation for a planned safari, or just want to enjoy some of the best animal photography opportunities anywhere in the New York area, you’ll enjoy and learn from participating.

Attendees will not only receive instruction as they walk, but a helpful handout with time-tested tips for photographing mammals and birds in a zoo setting. Some of the highlights of the tour are planned to include:

• The Zoo’s new baby giraffes (they’ll be 14 and 20 months old)
• The Zoo’s Silverback Gorilla (he is now comfortable enough to come out, so maybe we’ll get lucky)
• The Zoo’s Madagascar and Congo exhibits

One of the great things about zoo photography is that you don’t need a lot of gear. Anyone with a DSLR or even a mirrorless camera or a point and shoot with a long zoom can enjoy it -- but for best results long and fast lenses on an interchangeable lens camera are helpful.

Before the event, we’ll send you more suggestions on equipment as well as details on where we will meet up.

Our workshop is FREE, but attendees will be responsible for their own admission fee into the Zoo, $29.95 for an all-day pass at the ticket window. <a href="http://www.bronxzoo.com/

In this session Vincent will discuss the journey that he takes, or rather the journey that takes him, down the path of creating his images. From people, places and things, San Francisco to New York, Burma to India, infrared black and white to full-color visible spectrum, Vincent Versace will discuss his use of cameras, digital infrared black and white as well as the lenses he uses, the post processing choices and software he uses, and why he makes the choices he makes. All focused towards one goal: the print. It is not about taking a photograph, but how to be taken by a photograph.

The Wizard of Oz: Vincent Versace Reviews Your Work Sponsored by Epson, X-Rite & Lexar

Speaker: Vincent Versace
Date: Monday, June 3, 2013
Time: 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Event Type: Photography
One of the best ways to expand your artistic horizon as a visual photographic artist is to having your images seen through the eyes another photographer. By going through artist critiques specifically ones that focuses on better ways both technically as well as compositionally is the best way to add clarity to your artistic vision by engaging a dialog that is geared towards resolving the technical issues that get in the way of your artistic voice being heard.

The goal of this session is for Vincent to not only look at, evaluate and critique your photographs but to also have the group of your fellow photographers discuss the merits of each of the participants images. As the images are projected each image will become a learning experience not only for the individual photographer who captured it but for the entire group as well. All attendees to bring their best work to class.

To participate in this session, bring your NO MORE THAN THREE of your images sized to 1600 pixels in the widest dimension at 100ppi in the sRGB color spaced save as a jpeg and at maximum quality.
There are numerous ways to convert an image from color to hues of gray. But which one works best–and why–are questions that may be asked but are rarely if ever answered. Vincent Versace will show you some of the best ways to convert an image to black and white without ever leaving the RGB color space. In this book, you will learn which methods give you the best results and when to choose a simple or a complex solution. Different images have different needs as they are converted to black and white, and Vincent covers them all, leaving no stone unturned in his quest to create amazing, timeless black and white images–and teach the reader how to do the same. From Oz to Kansas includes coverage of Adobe Photoshop and Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro. Versace shares the knowledge he’s gained from decades of research and real-world experience to help the reader take black and white images from "good enough" to fine art quality.
The Cloisters museum and gardens, the branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe was assembled from architectural elements, both domestic and religious, that largely date from the twelfth through the fifteenth century. Needless to say, the photo opportunity is going to be spectacular!

Vincent Versace will be the Lord of the Castle for a day as he leads you on a magical photo walk through the gardens and terraces. Since this is such a divine place to photograph, we have also invited David Piazza from Westcott who will be bringing models and innovative, easy to use lights such as the Icelight and sturdy Westcott reflectors so everyone will get a chance to create some unforgettable imagery, complete with models.

We will meet directly at the main entrance to the Cloisters at 11:30 AM. You must be registered to attend this event. No standbys will be allowed to participate as the Cloisters have strict rules for numbers of people in groups. You will have to purchase a $20 group ticket to enter the museum and participate. Please bring $20 cash and do not prepay online. We will run three groups and we ask that you stay with your group during the event (again, these are the rules of the museum to keep congestion limited as we move about).

Please bring your cameras. We suggest an assortment of lenses from wide angle to portrait telephoto. Flash is not permitted at the museum, so leave your speed lights at home. Tripods are ok, however since this is a photo walk, you may wish to simply increase your ISO and forego the weight and hassle of a tripod. Make sure your batteries are charged and you have plenty of memory.

Once you are registered, expect an email from us with further instructions.

Please visit the Cloisters website here

Part 2: Demystifying Long Exposures and Timelapse
One of the constant challenges for photographers is the limitation of the camera to capture a scene as we see it with our eyes. HDR is aimed at addressing this limitation. HDR techniques allow a greater dynamic range of luminance between the lightest and darkest areas of an image. Using software to merge and process multiple frames shot at different exposures, the photographer produces images that capture the feelings that moved us to take the picture in the first place.

HDR is a surprisingly easy technique that anyone can master with just a little help getting started. Using Photomatix, HDR Efex Pro, and other pieces of software, Alan Kesselhaut will show you how to start with a good HDR image and make it a great HDR image.

The class will include:

An introduction to HDR, (including the 4 secrets of HDR Photography), gear, camera set-up and shooting tips, a discussion and demonstration of HDR processing software, and demonstration of HDR post-processing techniques.
These techniques changed the world of photography. Photographers found new life for their imagery and took to reinventing their slides into painterly one-of-a-kind gems. We all ran out to buy Day Lab printers, stocked up on slide film and hoarded all sorts of fine art printing papers. This workshop will show you how to use new materials and techniques to get similar results. You will leave here with new knowledge and perhaps a sample or two.

This workshop will be divided into two segments starting with the Faux Image Transfer technique. Through examples and demonstration you will be guided in the process and enjoy making your own sample. It’s easier to go home with correct exposures but harder to actually learn the craft of photography. Join professional photographer Tim Cooper as he explains the practice and benefits of Zone System Metering with modern Digital SLRS.

Ansel Adams’ original Zone System was based on metering multiple subjects in your composition, assessing their tonalities, and placing them in the correct spot on the exposure scale. This method helped us achieve accurate and consistent exposures in difficult lighting. Cameras may have changed, but our techniques have stayed the same. Tim will begin by reviewing basic exposure theory including gray cards and average tonalities. Next, Tim will give an overview of the metering patterns and show you how to use your built in meter to practice the Zone System. Wrapping up the session, he’ll show you how Zone Metering will not only help you achieve perfect exposures, but it will help you achieve a better sense of light, recognize tonal differences, create better compositions, know when to use filters, and the best way to use your flash. In short, while learning how to get a better exposure, you are really learning the entire craft of photography.

The Landscape Photographer's Guide to Magic Light Sponsored by Manfrotto

Speaker: Tim Cooper
Date: Tuesday, June 18, 2013
Time: 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Event Type: Photography
Join professional landscape photographer Tim Cooper for an information packed lecture on Magic Light. Making great landscape photos will often require a little planning so Tim explains the differences between Civil Twilight, Nautical Twilight, Sunrise and Sunset so that you can be in the right location at exactly the right time. The lecture will also include sections on necessary filters, field techniques, composition and ends with tons of tricks and tips to help you make stunning and dynamic photographs of the natural world.
Gabriel is a self-taught photographer who has been capturing the moments of time with everything from pinhole to the latest digital cameras. Using his wide range of experience across different photographic mediums, he will teach you how to properly meter and process your long exposures using either film or digital capture.
