Join award winning industrial photographer, Stephen Mallon, for a lecture on two significant bodies of work, including “American Reclamation” and “The Salvage of Flight 1549”. “American Reclamation” chronicles the recycling culture and industry in America, and contains portraits of people, machines, processes and products born from recycling. It is a haunting, yet beautifully abstract portrayal of rubber processing plants, incinerators, tires, and machinery. “The Salvage of Flight 1549,” documents the aftermath of this unforgettable and extraordinary event, in which Flight 1549 crashed into the Hudson River without a single case of fatality. As the only photographer with access to the scene of the crash, Stephen has created one of a kind large-scale photographs that have been featured at Wired.com, Professional Photographer magazine, PDN Pulse, aphotoeditor.com, Artworks magazine, photographeronline.com, CBS news and MSNBC.

Spinning off the success of his images, Stephen has turned “The Salvage of Flight 1549” into a photography exhibit at a prominent art gallery in Brooklyn. He’ll discuss the process of getting your own show, from determining the location of your venue, framing your photos, setting your prices, promoting your exhibit, to choosing what kind of wine to serve at the opening. Stephen will also provide advice on how to get started in fine art photography by talking about his own experience with this genre. Lastly, Stephen will discuss his role with ASMP (American Society of Media Photographers), his volunteer work, and his involvement with other not-for-profits, including City Harvest, NY Cares, and Flashes of Hope.

Better Photographic Composition - Beyond the Rule of Thirds

Digital cameras can practically do it all, but what they can’t do is adjust for good composition, a fundamental quality of a great image. Ironically, the technological wonders of the digital era have made some of us blind to seeing photographs as art, and although the latest digital cameras may be able to perform in almost any light, if you can’t “see” the shot, then you won’t capture the image.

In this program, David Brommer will cover the basic concepts of composition as established by the masters of the Renaissance. Commencing with the classic rule of thirds and leaping into theories of color and balance, David will touch upon a range of topics, including image construction, positive and negative space, as well as other advanced composition. General shooting questions like, “Is the shot better if it’s a horizontal or vertically composed?” and conceptual ideas such as integrating theme and subject context will be explored. Another factor to be considered is color vs. black and white, and how these two treatments can influence the visual impact of the photograph. Just when your head is spinning with new cropping and composing ideas, David will demonstrate special shooting techniques including how to create a pan blur, zooming the lens during exposure and low angle (worms eye view) shooting tips.

This seminar is designed for anyone wishing to take their photography to the next level by learning how to frame and compose their image according to simple visual rules. It will matter not if your digital or film, single lens reflex or point and shoot, good composition is the first consideration when making a good photograph. Henri Cartier-Bresson said, “To photograph is to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It's at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy.” Understanding composition and utilizing it is an invaluable skill to mastering the image.

Joyce Tenneson, one of the most respected photographers of our time, will deliver a special lecture at B&H on a new book entitled The View. Tenneson has asked photographers around the world to submit photographs of a view that has somehow, and for some unknown reason, become unforgettable and meaningful to them in a deep way. Rather than simply beautiful landscape photographs, Tenneson is seeking to uncover something about universal perception - what it is about certain places or photographs that for some mysterious reason, speak to our heart in poignant manners.

Several years ago, Tenneson started investigating whether or not there had been any research done on why certain locations strike awe in the viewer, and why these locations are different for each person. For example, why is one person inexplicably attracted to the desert, or the mountains, or the ocean and what are the psychological forces behind this attraction? Tenneson found there was very little research that shed light on this phenomenon. This inspired her to organize and edit a book that includes not only photographs, but also short statements from each photographer describing the personal significance of that particular view. She plans to have the View Project expand to an interactive website where people from around the world can submit photos and share views that have deeply affected them as well.

The B&H Event Space is pleased to announce that Maine Media Workshops will be hosting a series of portfolio reviews for all levels of aspiring and professional photographers who have created a body of work to be critiqued. A team of industry professionals, each an instructor at Maine Media Workshops, will be at the B&H Event Space to provide 20 minute one-on-one review sessions, in which you will receive valuable feedback on your portfolio.

In order to sign up for a portfolio review, please register online for a 2-hour session of your choice. Once you have registered, you will receive an email from Maine Media Workshops with the name of your Reviewer and your 20 minute timeslot. On the day of your review, please bring a current portfolio of your work, either in the form of print or digital. Please note that if you bring a CD of your images, you must also have a laptop to display your work.

The value of attending a portfolio review is immeasurable. In addition to receiving creative guidance from a highly acclaimed professional photographer, you will also have the opportunity to engage in dialogue with your peers. Light may be complicated; sometimes it shines in a variety of flavors such as daylight pouring in through a window to a room lit with fluorescents. How do you handle this type of lighting to get professional results? It does present a challenge, but with a proper understanding of exposure, color temperature and light quality you will be able to photograph in any situation with accurate and pleasing results.

Join B&H Maven Jason Friedman and Professional Photographer David Nicholas as they simplify mixed lighting (continuous light, whether it may be man-made or sunlight mixed with strobe). In this comprehensive five hour seminar, this duo will explore the interrelationship between aperture, shutter speed and how they affect both your flash and ambient exposure. You will gain an understanding of color temperature and how to correct for different lighting situations. You'll learn how to maximize your on-camera flash for event photography with shutter dragging as well as how to master fill flash outdoors to achieve strobe over sun, strobe at sun and strobe under sun. Attendees will be able to master light when it comes from varying sources and intensity.

The seminar will kick off in the B&H Event Space for a brief technical overview of concepts in lighting. SocialDocumentary.net was launched in October 2008 and today features more than 180 online documentary photography exhibits created by photographers from around the world. The goal of SocialDocumentary.net is to use the power of photography to promote global awareness. SDN members include photographers, NGOs, journalists, editors, and students who create and explore documentary websites. Recent exhibits have explored oil workers in the Niger River Delta, male sex workers in India, Central American immigrant women during their journey north, and Iraqi and Afghan refugees in Greece.

Starting in September, SocialDocumentary.net (SDN) is issuing a Call for Entries, “Crisis & Opportunity: Documenting the Global Recession” for photo essays that provide insight into how ordinary citizens around the world are coping during these new “hard times” and how individuals, companies, industries, family businesses, communities, and governments are responding to the crisis. The B&H Event Space is pleased to present internationally acclaimed Fine Art Photographer, Robin Schwartz. Robin creates meticulously composed, disquieting portraits of her daughter, Amelia, interacting with a range of exotic animals, from monkeys to kangaroos. Her photographs are drawn from real journeys undertaken with Amelia, but also depict relationships with animals through invented worlds where Amelia and the animals not only co-exist, but also interact. The world that Robin and her daughter explore is one where the line between human and animal overlaps or is blurred.

During her lecture at B&H, Robin will discuss her project “Amelia’s World: Animal Affinity,” which displays Amelia’s remarkable relationship with animals. This body of work conveys Amelia’s extraordinary comfort level with animals, which they in turn share with her. Robin’s passion for animals and the spiritual connection she gains from photographing them inspired her to explore on a deeper level the real and fictional interspecies relationships, portrayed through portraits of Amelia. Robin has always been obsessed with animals, having a necessity for their company and always consciously working at developing relationships with them. Conversely, Amelia is oblivious to her unique gift with animals; her childlike innocence breaks down barriers with animals which allow them to interact on an intimate level that many adults could never experience. It is this special quality in Amelia that Robin strives to capture through her images.

As Amelia’s personality matures, this project will continue to evolve; Robin will explore the future of Amelia and her relationship to animals. “Amelia is my priority, my muse, my co-conspirator, my tormentor and my bliss. The Sandhog Project: An Exploration Of The Subterranean World Of Miners

What is The Sandhog Project?

Sandhogs are miners who are 800 feet below Manhattan tunneling bedrock to create the 60 mile long City Water Tunnel #3, which will provide fresh water and prevent a catastrophic water shortage in the city. The future of the Metropolis depends on the efforts of these unseen miners. Since construction began in 1970, one Sandhog has lost his life in a mining-related accident for approximately each mile tunneled. Few people though know about this mammoth excavation–or the story of the Sandhogs themselves.

Gina states, “This simultaneity of their underground reality and my above ground life inspired me to explore and embrace the city for what it is—a living, interrelated, sculptural body. Over the past five years I have photographed the Sandhogs, illuminating the vibrant subculture and complex infrastructure in a rich organic light. The Sandhog Project is a multi-faceted work of photo, video, web and installation art to spark the public’s consciousness of this essential, yet largely unknown perilous subterranean world. By placing my photographs and videos in public spaces (physical and virtual) and directly involving people through on the street interviews, I endeavor to ask the public to reflect on their daily experiences - what is our role in and relationship to the city?”

Gina will be presenting images and video from the project, while talking about the creative, as well as the practical, processes of developing this body of work. She will also talk about the equipment and technique used to capture the sandhogs’ subterranean reality. Copies of the book will be on hand for purchase and signing.

Join internationally acclaimed photojournalist, Peter Turnley, for an insightful look into humanity amidst the last three decades of history, geo-politics, and everyday life in different countries from around the world. Peter’s presentation will weave in and out of images depicting life worldwide, in moments of conflict, hardship, and political change, as well as images of major world figures that influenced the direction history during the last three decades. Turnley’s visual exploration of the world, in which he captures the "decisive moments" from each country he traveled to, offers moments of beauty and esthetic power that characterize the daily life of different regions.

Turnley will speak with great sincerity about his beginnings in photography and the incredible gift that vision and sight can offer to any observer willing to keep their heart and mind open to the infinite images waiting to be discovered at the corner of any street. Turnley will share his photographs from the Gulf War of 1991, the Balkans (Bosnia), Somalia, Rwanda, South Africa, Chechnya, Haiti, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Kosovo, and the war in Iraq. He will also reveal other dimensions of work by showing his black and white street photography in Paris and the United States.

Turnley is one of the rare contemporary photographers whose experience, philosophical roots, and vision are rooted strongly in both the traditions of America and Europe; he has divided his life between living in the US and in Paris. He was the young assistant to the great French photographer Robert Doisneau and has been influenced by such masters as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andre Kertesz, Eugene Smith, Edouard Boubat, Robert Frank and Willy Ronis. Turnley’s lecture is a transformational experience, and will speak in one way or another to the realities of the world familiar to every person in the audience.

Nikon Wireless Flash Hands-on Workshop with Shooting Stations

Nikon Training Specialist, Paul Van Allen, delivers a special hands-on workshop designed specifically for Nikon owners who are getting started with wireless flash. Paul will begin with a short overview of the buttons and menus for wireless flash. After a solid understanding of how to set-up your gear, you will be photographing at the “Shooting Stations” set-up in the B&H Event Space so that you can practice making the most of this amazing technology. Participants will need to bring their own NIKON camera and lenses, and Nikon will provide all the flashes necessary for this event. Due to the technology used by the other manufacturers, non-Nikon cameras will not function properly for this workshop.

The recommend cameras for this workshop are the: D80, D90, D200, D300, and D700 as all these cameras have the wireless commander system built-in.

Lens recommendation: a moderate telephoto (80mm through 135mm) that will focus closer than about 5 feet. Other lenses may be used with varying degrees of results.

Note to owners of D40/D40x/D60/D70/D70s/D5000/D3/D3x: You may participate in this workshop but you will need to provide an additional item to trigger the different groups of Nikon flashes wirelessly. The only recommended triggers for your cameras are: SB-800 or SB-900 or SU-800.
