Dr. Singer will discuss how he has “invented a new way of photographing flowers that reveals the plant form, color, and texture in remarkable detail” (Audobon magazine).

Recently featured on CBS News Sunday Morning, Dr. Singer has received the Hasselblad Laureate Award winner based on his contribution to fine art photography and to “our perception and appreciation of the botanical world.” Botanica Magnifica has recently been reviewed in Reader’s Digest, Vanity Fair, Shutterbug, and ARTnews magazines.

Using novel digital camera techniques that did not exist ten years ago, Singer has created masterpieces of photographic art. Inspired by the work of the great botanical artists that came before him, Dr. Singer has developed a style of modern digital photography that possesses both the clarity and the artistry of traditional botanical illustration. Revealing the delicate structures of plants at a level of detail unachievable with brush and paint, Botanica Magnifica provides an entirely new appreciation of the complexity and individuality of these living beings.

With its spectacular photographs and informative text, this landmark book is one of the most impressive volumes of natural history ever published.

In this program, David Brommer will cover the basic concepts of composition as established by the masters of the Renaissance. Commencing with the classic rule of thirds and leaping into theories of color and balance, David will touch upon a range of topics, including image construction, positive and negative space, as well as other advanced composition. General shooting questions like, “Is the shot better if it’s a horizontal or vertically composed?” and conceptual ideas such as integrating theme and subject context will be explored. Another factor to be considered is color vs. black and white, and how these two treatments can influence the visual impact of the photograph. Just when your head is spinning with new cropping and composing ideas, David will demonstrate special shooting techniques including how to create a pan blur, zooming the lens during exposure and low angle (worms eye view) shooting tips.

This seminar is designed for anyone wishing to take their photography to the next level by learning how to frame and compose their image according to simple visual rules. It will matter not if your digital or film, single lens reflex or point and shoot, good composition is the first consideration when making a good photograph. Henri Cartier-Bresson said, “To photograph is to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It's at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy.” Understanding composition and utilizing it is an invaluable skill to mastering the image.

Final Cut Studio - The Revolution Continues!

Speaker: Don Peebles
Date: Thursday, October 15, 2009
Time: 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Event Type: Video, Software
Apple's Final Cut Studio is the most widely used professional video editing tool set available today. With over 100 new features the recent release of Final Cut Studio advances the art and technology of Filmmaking with innovations that help you work faster, collaborate more efficiently, and finish brilliantly. Join B&H and Don Peebles of Apple for an overview of many of the exciting new features including the expanded family of Pro Res codecs, new speed and frame rate tools, Alpha transitions, iChat Theater, Global transitions, new format support for AVC-Intra and native 4K REDCODE support as well as new shadows and reflections in Motion, new export and sharing options in Compressor, Powerful new Sound editing tools in SoundTrack Pro and new 3rd party announcements such as the AJA KiPRO field recording device for Pro Res.
They’ll cover basic concepts, techniques and practices that will have you coming home from your trip more excited than you were when you began!

SIX ELEMENTS OF A WOW IMAGE. There are six basic steps that all come together to create the wallop to make a wall hanger of an image. These can easily be incorporated into one’s mental photo “tool bag” and the Silvermans will demonstrate these and make them easily accessible to any photographer.

PHOTOGRAPHING PEOPLE: What trip is complete without capturing the culture and the energy of the place visited. Even a farmers market in a local nearby town has its own sense of flavor and energy and working with some good design strategies and natural light can have you bring home a real sense of the people and their own story. Good discussion regarding how to approach people in any given area and be comfortable in taking your photos. Candid shots as well as controlling the situation are all considered in this discussion.

PHOTOGRAPHING LANDSCAPE AND CITYSCAPES: Whether you are standing on a beautiful bluff overlooking a glorious sunset or wandering through a handcraft fair in a distant land; there is a way to “bring it home” with your camera. The Silvermans will describe the best way to approach any given scene and come home with winning images and not a lot of the same old stuff.

CLEANING CAMERA’S SENSOR: No doubt about it; cleaning your sensor can be a real challenge and particularly pre and post travel. A good discussion of how to handle dirt and weather elements while traveling will also be included.

Tenneson has asked photographers around the world to submit photographs of a view that has somehow, and for some unknown reason, become unforgettable and meaningful to them in a deep way. Rather than simply beautiful landscape photographs, Tenneson is seeking to uncover something about universal perception - what it is about certain places or photographs that for some mysterious reason, speak to our heart in poignant manners.

Several years ago, Tenneson started investigating whether or not there had been any research done on why certain locations strike awe in the viewer, and why these locations are different for each person. For example, why is one person inexplicably attracted to the desert, or the mountains, or the ocean and what are the psychological forces behind this attraction? Tenneson found there was very little research that shed light on this phenomenon. This inspired her to organize and edit a book that includes not only photographs, but also short statements from each photographer describing the personal significance of that particular view. She plans to have the View Project expand to an interactive website where people from around the world can submit photos and share views that have deeply affected them as well.
Forty-three years later his photographic archives testify to the breadth of his curiosity and the strength of his personality; his pictures are raw with emotion and redolent of place and humanity. Whether photographing the extremes of war or coaxing Bono to reveal himself to the camera Kratochvil digs deeper with his lens than most would dream possible.
Kratochvil is still exploring. In his presentation at B&H Photo he will talk about his unfinished journey, illustrating his story with pictures from his archive and answering questions about how to overcome convention to surprise and inspire the viewer with a different view.

ReCapture Your Vision: Image Enhancement Techniques with Nik Software

Speaker: Janice Wendt
Date: Monday, October 26, 2009
Time: 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Event Type: Software
Ever wonder why your captured images do not live up to your expectations? The exposure was right, the lighting was right, and most important, the framing was right. But the image did not live up to what you envision. Learn re-touching techniques using Nik Software that bring back the "alive" feeling, the mood, and all that inspired you when you captured the image.
Come join us for an autumnal adventure as we capture the pinnacle of fall by photographing the transformation of leaves in Central Park. Whether they lie on the ground, or hang from the trees, there’s no shortage of angles or awe inspiring colors to shoot, and with a Lensbaby you’ll witness leaves in ways you never imagined possible. This event is your opportunity to try out the Lensbaby lineup of selective focus SLR lenses, including the Composer, Muse and Optic Swap kit, some neat accessories like the macro kit and creative aperture set, plus some brand new Lensbaby products. We’ll start the day off in the Event Space, with a multimedia slideshow of dazzling Lensbaby images, followed by a brief tutorial on the Lensbaby and how to use it in order to capture the sweetest sweet spot (aka how to achieve selective focus) possible. Next, you learn how utilize each component of the Lensbaby to achieve the unique effect that only this special lens is able to produce. Afterwards, we’ll supply you with a Lensbaby loaner and instructions, as well as list of safari clues and photographical subjects, elements, and techniques to focus on while you’re gallivanting through the crisp cool air in Central Park. During the safari, the B&H Mavens and Lensbaby team will be available to offer both technical and aesthetic advice for capturing great images.
• Original idea
• Sweetness of sweet spot
Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography."

Light may be complicated; sometimes it shines in a variety of flavors such as daylight pouring in through a window to a room lit with fluorescents. How do you handle this type of lighting to get professional results? It does present a challenge, but with a proper understanding of exposure, color temperature and light quality you will be able to photograph in any situation with accurate and pleasing results.

Join B&H Maven Jason Friedman and Professional Photographer David Nicholas as they simplify mixed lighting (continuous light, whether it may be man-made or sunlight mixed with strobe). In this comprehensive five hour seminar, this duo will explore the interrelationship between aperture, shutter speed and how they affect both your flash and ambient exposure. You will gain an understanding of color temperature and how to correct for different lighting situations. You'll learn how to maximize your on-camera flash for event photography with shutter dragging as well as how to master fill flash outdoors to achieve strobe over sun, strobe at sun and strobe under sun. Attendees will be able to master light when it comes from varying sources and intensity.

The seminar will kick off in the B&H Event Space for a brief technical overview of concepts in lighting. After a lunch break, David and Jason welcome you to Dream Studios just down the street where you will see these concepts demonstrated in a live model shoot. Watch and learn as the images are projected larger than life as they are captured in real time from the camera to reinforce the concepts of Mixed Lighting.

Note: This will be an advanced course. In keeping with his multiplatform approach to visual storytelling, Kashi will show stills, multimedia and film work. Included in his presentation will be a short multimedia piece that was specially created as a companion to his newest book, THREE, a series of triptychs harvested from images he has created over the past 20+ years.

He will also talk about the importance of advocacy journalism, how to make an impact with your work by reaching audiences outside of mainstream media, partnering with academia, NGOs and activist organizations to utilize the power of visual narrative to reach people and make a difference.

SocialDocumentary.net was launched in October 2008 and today features more than 180 online documentary photography exhibits created by photographers from around the world. The goal of SocialDocumentary.net is to use the power of photography to promote global awareness. SDN members include photographers, NGOs, journalists, editors, and students who create and explore documentary websites. Recent exhibits have explored oil workers in the Niger River Delta, male sex workers in India, Central American immigrant women during their journey north, and Iraqi and Afghan refugees in Greece.

Starting in September, SocialDocumentary.net (SDN) is issuing a Call for Entries, “Crisis & Opportunity: Documenting the Global Recession” for photo essays that provide insight into how ordinary citizens around the world are coping during these new “hard times” and how individuals, companies, industries, family businesses, communities, and governments are responding to the crisis. Competition winners will receive a $1500 prize, an exhibit of their winning work at an exhibition at powerHouse Arena in Brooklyn, NY in February 2010, and be published in a catalog of the exhibition. Oxfam America is the NGO partner for the Call for Entries.

During her lecture at B&H, Robin will discuss her project “Amelia’s World: Animal Affinity,” which displays Amelia’s remarkable relationship with animals. This body of work conveys Amelia’s extraordinary comfort level with animals, which they in turn share with her. Robin’s passion for animals and the spiritual connection she gains from photographing them inspired her to explore on a deeper level the real and fictional interspecies relationships, portrayed through portraits of Amelia. Robin has always been obsessed with animals, having a necessity for their company and always consciously working at developing relationships with them. Conversely, Amelia is oblivious to her unique gift with animals; her childlike innocence breaks down barriers with animals which allow them to interact on an intimate level that many adults could never experience. It is this special quality in Amelia that Robin strives to capture through her images.

As Amelia’s personality matures, this project will continue to evolve; Robin will explore the future of Amelia and her relationship to animals. “Amelia is my priority, my muse, my co-conspirator, my tormentor and my bliss. Collaborating with Amelia, I am able to go to any place in time.” Come hear Robin speak at B&H to discover more about her personal approach to her work, and how it has earned her acclaim throughout the world.
Saul will begin by discussing his documentary approach to producing a fine art project, often exploring the intersection of private and public experience in the urban environment, and more recently, more personal dream-like images, many of which contain subtle messages conveyed through his minimalist approach. Following his slideshow, Saul will discuss some techniques and practices for promoting yourself in the Fine Art market. Editing work for a portfolio, targeting galleries and museums, preparing for interviews, and building promotional materials are just some of the topics that Saul will cover in his presentation.

A Week Abroad: From Planning to Finished Story Presented by Canon

Speaker: Rudy Winston
Date: Tuesday, November 17, 2009
Time: 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Event Type: Photography
Taking pictures while traveling is one of the most important aspects of photography to many SLR users, but when the opportunity avails itself, it can sometimes seem a daunting task.
Sandhogs are miners who are 800 feet below Manhattan tunneling bedrock to create the 60 mile long City Water Tunnel #3, which will provide fresh water and prevent a catastrophic water shortage in the city. The future of the Metropolis depends on the efforts of these unseen miners. Since construction began in 1970, one Sandhog has lost his life in a mining-related accident for approximately each mile tunneled. Few people though know about this mammoth excavation–or the story of the Sandhogs themselves.

Gina states, “This simultaneity of their underground reality and my above ground life inspired me to explore and embrace the city for what it is—a living, interrelated, sculptural body. Over the past five years I have photographed the Sandhogs, illuminating the vibrant subculture and complex infrastructure in a rich organic light. The Sandhog Project is a multi-faceted work of photo, video, web and installation art to spark the public’s consciousness of this essential, yet largely unknown perilous subterranean world. By placing my photographs and videos in public spaces (physical and virtual) and directly involving people through on the street interviews, I endeavor to ask the public to reflect on their daily experiences - what is our role in and relationship to the city?”

Gina will be presenting images and video from the project, while talking about the creative, as well as the practical, processes of developing this body of work. She will also talk about the equipment and technique used to capture the sandhogs’ subterranean reality. Copies of the book will be on hand for purchase and signing.

Turnley will speak with great sincerity about his beginnings in photography and the incredible gift that vision and sight can offer to any observer willing to keep their heart and mind open to the infinite images waiting to be discovered at the corner of any street. Turnley will share his photographs from the Gulf War of 1991, the Balkans (Bosnia), Somalia, Rwanda, South Africa, Chechnya, Haiti, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Kosovo, and the war in Iraq. He will also reveal other dimensions of work by showing his black and white street photography in Paris and the United States.

Turnley is one of the rare contemporary photographers whose experience, philosophical roots, and vision are rooted strongly in both the traditions of America and Europe; he has divided his life between living in the US and in Paris. He was the young assistant to the great French photographer Robert Doisneau and has been influenced by such masters as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andre Kertesz, Eugene Smith, Edouard Boubat, Robert Frank and Willy Ronis. Turnley’s lecture is a transformational experience, and will speak in one way or another to the realities of the world familiar to every person in the audience.
