SUMMARY:Into the Night: Practical Tips and Techniques from Seven Night Photography Specialists
DESCRIPTION:Photographers have long enjoyed a special bond with working at night. While these conditions often present challenges to basic vision and limits to tools and techniques, they can also be extraordinarily liberating and stimulate unique points of view. In the best of cases, night photography marries the exploration of uncharted territories with a deliberate and studied approach. On Monday March 9, B&H Event Space will host a day-long night photography symposium, organized by Jill Waterman, author of the recent book Night and Low Light Photography, and co-curator of the group photography exhibition Night Moves. Please join us for a dynamic schedule of lectures and discussion designed to spark your imagination and improve your skill in creating images of the world after dark. The Night Photography seminar at B&H is a very special day, where seven night photography specialists discuss their images, techniques, tips and the inspiration behind their work. Included among the subjects presented are: digital night photography in the field covering digital image noise, histograms and flashing highlights; night time lighting situations and color balance; varied techniques for painting with light; preserving pixel structure in night time images and Photoshop adjustments; post-production of night images including optimizing digital exposures and developing images in Lightroom; night photography in challenging circumstances; and integrating night time images into a final body of work. A panel discussion at the end of the day will include time for questions and open discussion between presenters and attendees. This is a rare opportunity to engage in learning and conversation with some of today's most accomplished night photography specialists. This seminar is timed to coincide with Night Moves, a group exhibition co-curated by Daryl-Ann Saunders and Jill Waterman, which features work from thirteen night photography specialists. This exhibit is on view from March 5 - April 11, 2009 in the neighboring spaces of Farmani Gallery and Safe-T Gallery , at 111 Front Street in Dumbo, Brooklyn. A public reception will be held on Thursday, March 5 from 6-8pm, with all of the artists in attendance. A number of non-local artists are making a special trip to New York to attend the reception and present at the B&H symposium on Monday March 9.
