SUMMARY:20 Minutes of Something Completely Different, plus 100 minutes of Image Deconstruction
DESCRIPTION:With Thom preparing to give the keynote speech at the annual Nebraska Photography get-together, he's decided to give B&H customers a sneak preview of his presentation so that he can get in a little last minute practice. Believe it or not, Thom—who's managed to give four hour talks at the Event Space in the past—claims that he'll manage to give his new presentation in a TED-like 20 minutes. That alone ought to be worth coming to see. No one's known Thom to speak for such a short time ever before. He won't tell us what the topic is other than to say that it should appeal to and engage all photographers, not just Nikon aficionados, landscape groupies, or wildlife shooters. Thom has volunteered to use the remainder of the time for this event to do something that's been asked of him previously: he's going to slice and dice YOUR images. That's right: bring a USB thumb drive with ONE image on it that you want Thom to critique and even do some raw development or additional editing on. You might also want to wear flame-proof clothing and bring a hard hat, as anyone that's been to one of Thom's workshops knows he'll find something that you didn't see in your image. But the goal isn't to embarrass you (we'll do this in a way so you can stay anonymous if you'd like), it's to get you to see just what your image can be. No guarantee on how many images Thom will get to, but this is a great chance to see how a pro looks at and tackles images. Don't be shy. Find an image that you'd like evaluated or developed, and see what happens. This sort of discussion always ends up going places you don't always expect, and there's something to be learned from every image. If it makes you less worried, Thom says that he'll “almost certainly” show some images of his own that are worse than anything you'll bring in the 20-minute presentation that kicks off this event. Hmm. What could that mean? As usual, leave it to Thom to try something new and different and to tease us no end before hand.
