The d2 Blu-ray Drive from LaCie is an external Blu-ray disc burner that can also burn and read DVD and CD discs. It connects to your computer via either the FireWire-400 or USB 2.0 interfaces. The drive allows you to write data to single- and dual-layer Blu-ray discs, which can hold up to 50 GB of data; more than 10 times that of a standard DVD-R. These high-capacity discs are ideal for data archiving, backup and HD video delivery.

The drive has been designed to facilitate professional HD video recording. A 50 GB Blu-ray disc can store approximately 4 hours of HD video, making it an ideal solution for video archiving or as a delivery mechanism to transfer a project to a mastering facility. Video can be compressed using MPEG-2, AVC or VC-1 codecs, allowing you to share HD video with your customers in stunning quality.

Making backups of your computer on Blu-ray is also time-saving as compared to DVD; you won't be constantly swapping out discs to create backups of your system.
