The Mini Me FireWire from Apogee, is a portable two-channel analog to digital converter, with built-in microphone/instrument preamps. The unit features a low-power, wide range supply-voltage that's designed for maximum flexibility, both in the studio and in the field. Aside from outputting simultaneous stereo AES/EBU and S/PDIF signals, the unit can connect directly to a computer, utilizing the FireWire interface.

The microphone preamps accept microphone, line and instrument-level inputs and supply phantom power. The universal XLR/TRS connectors select the instrument input automatically on sensing a 1/4" TRS jack. Input levels can be finely adjusted using front-panel, multi-turn trimmers, while LED indicators provide a clear display of available headroom.

In addition to Apogee's Soft Limit process, the converter features "Push-IT," a three-curve stereo compressor/ limiter circuit that is ideal for adding extra punch, or as a safety net to tame unexpected dynamic swings during live recording.

The FireWire interface can carry two channels of audio from the Mini Me to a computer and back again for monitoring, at up to 24-bits/96kHz resolution. If sample rates are mismatched between the converter and computer, the unit will convert sample rates automatically. A comprehensive mono/stereo monitor section allows the user to balance the direct sound being recorded with audio returned via the FireWire port.

An internal, high-stability, reference crystal oscillator makes the Mini Me a good choice for a master clock, while the unit's low power consumption makes it ideal for battery operation. The included external power supply delivers 12VDC, but the unit can operate on 6 to 16VDC. Several suitable battery packs are available from third-party vendors.
