The Canon Battery Grip BG-E6 is an optional battery grip designed specifically for the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. It allows users to load a choice of one or two LP-E6 battery packs. With two packs, the already-impressive battery life is doubled, compared to using a single LP-E6 pack in-camera. This is especially useful when taking advantage of the camera's movie mode or Live View mode - operating modes that use more power. In addition, with the included BGM-E6 Battery Magazine, you can alternatively also run the camera off six AA batteries.
Furthermore the BG-E6 provides full vertical shooting controls, which can be independently turned on or off as the photographer needs to enhance camera handling, especially for shooting vertical pictures.
Note: The battery grip BG-E4 for the previous EOS 5D is not compatible with the new EOS 5D Mark II camera

This battery grip is a must have if you do studio work, portraits, sports, or travel with your camera. Not only does it allow you to easily use your camera in portrait orientation by giving you all the buttons you need on the grip, but it also doubles your battery life be holding 2 batteries.
The grip fits nice and tight on the camera and you'll forget it's a separate piece. It makes it so easy to turn your camera sideways and shoot pictures giving you easy access to all of the buttons that are normally at the top right of the camera so you don't have to have your hands in a funky position reaching over the camera.
One other nice thing about the grip is that if you are out and your batteries die, the grip will allow you to use AA batteries instead of the Canon LP-E6 batteries. This can be a saver.

Okay, so I think it goes without saying (especially given the below reviews) that a battery grip is extremely helpful. I love grips; I've installed them on every one of my cameras and I never regret it. But what about *THIS* battery grip?Bottom line: Not worth it! It feels cheaply made. It's broken twice in the six months I've owned it. First off, the thumb wheel to screw the grip onto the tripod mount of the camera uses a complex system of inner gears, and they're ALL MADE OF PLASTIC. Which means if you crank down too hard on the grip to put it on or take it off, the gears shatter and your grip is stuck on your camera. You then get to pay for the privilege of shipping your camera to Canon and getting it repaired ($50 repair for my particular case). In my case, the gears broke halfway through taking the grip off, breaking the electrical connection, yet not far enough that I could work tools in there to fully remove the grip. Result: a few plastic gears in the grip rendered the entire camera completely unusable."I'll just put it on and leave it on!" declares you. Unfortunately, that won't work either, because the thing loosens over time. So much for the complex gear-driven system that's supposed to... be better than the direct-drive system used on all the other grips out there? For comparison, the cheap knockoff grip I had for my Rebel XT is six years, two rainstorms, a dunking in the river, and countless rock-smashings in, and still going strong (I will admit there might be some gaff tape involved in that).Secondly, the shutter button on the camera has two very satisfying 'levels' of feel to it -- the half-press to expose and the full press to fire the shutter. The button on the grip doesn't have that same feedback, and it makes it hard to work with. Off, Half-on, and full-on are just three arbitrary places in how hard you squeeze the shutter. This would all be okay if the thing were maybe half the price that it is. But at this pricing level, go with a cheap knockoff. You're not getting any extra quality here.I would then take that money you save and buy the Canon brand batteries. Tried other brands, and after a year of use, *the combined run time of all five of my third-party batteries was half the run-time of my one Canon-brand battery.* So I decided to do it right this time and go brand-name. Batteries did not disappoint. Grip did.

Comments about Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip:
Yes, I know: if you need a battery grip for your Canon 5D MlII, you can get a Vello BG-C2 for much less money. The new one I previously tried would sporadically not trigger the camera, causing missed shots. The Canon BG-E6 battery grip has not skipped a beat and responds instantly. I've shot all day with lots of juice left over for the following day (using two Canon E6 Li-I batteries -- they pack 1800mAh, unlike some third-party batteries that won't last as long). As far as I'm concerned, the grip has become a permanent part of the camera; I don't see any reason to remove it.
The unit is solidly constructed, and provides all the expected convenient features for efficient operation (AA battery cradle, if you need/want it for emergencies; storage slot for camera battery compartment cover, DC coupler cord channel to permit grip's battery compartment door to be closed when a DC adapter is used; a complete set of vertical grip controls -- shutter, main dial, AE/FE lock/Index/Reduce, AF point select/Magnify, AF start, vertical grip on/off,
Pricey? Yes. Regrets? Nope. My advice: Don't mess with the rest, and just go for the best.

I had bought an after market battery pack, worked, but after a while it started to turn off at a critical time, I missed alot of shots. Wasn't quite fitting right. Now that I have the genuine Canon BG-E6 haven't missed a shot(due to loss of power) yet. B&H came throught with a low price and I received it with in two days. Thank you

Best addition to the eos 5d markii. Same exact finish as the eos body and makes the camera feel perfectly solid. I wouldn't recommend using a hand strap; instead get a crumpler neck strap for best comfort.

Shooting portrait style on the ground was difficult. Now that I have the extra help with the second trigger, makes it that much easier for me. The only down fall about this product for me is the added weight and its bulkiness. But it wasn't enough for me to not get it.

Comments about Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip:
More than just a grip, the additional battery makes for worry-free field operation when you're far from a power outlet. I often do 3 or 4 jobs before needing to recharge batteries. And if you ever shoot vertically you know how awkward holding the camera and pressing the shutter release can be. This adds an extra button on the side that makes it effortless while giving you a much better grip on the camera. I have one on both my 5D and my 5D Mark II.

Love it, no complaints. Adds a nice grip when shooting in portrait with added shutter and dial controls for ease of use. Battery life is greatwith 2 batteries
Comments about Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip:
There're reasons why most, if not, all pro cameras comes with a grip already. It gives more battery life to your camera because, you can load an additional battery in it. Plus, it comes with a AA battery magazine too, which can easily load when you need more power. And, let's not forget the vertical shooting easiness it provides. Not only that you don't have to twist your hand to shoot vertically, important controls are easily available too.

I have just started using the product. After reading on line about problems with copy cats, I purchased from B & G. It's the real thing, and works vey well. Solid, no BG flex. I use a camera skin for my 5D Mk II, and would love to see a BG skin as well for outdoor work here on the wet coast.

Comments about Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip:
With a grip you should be able to put it on, and let it do its job without thinking about it. This item did just that. One small recommendation. It would be nice if the mechanism to attach to body clicked in more positively. The screw always seems to need to be tightened.

Make portrait orientation a snap with dual controls.
The locking dial is still a weak point. A lever would be better.

awesome. works great. having the extra battery and grip makes me have one thing less to worry about. the 5d mkii can also tell you what percentage you have of each battery; i haven't tried it with the 6aa. it has a built in compartment for the original battery door so you dont loose it, for when you dont want/need the grip.

Comments about Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip:
What can you really say about a battery grip? I shoot an average of 100-400 shots in a given day. I haven't had to recharge the batteries in nearly three weeks. The controls are ergonomic and easy to use. I have small hands so this is a definite plus. My 5D with the grip attached is a bit heavy but in my mind the trade off would be lower quailty equipment so the weight is not an issue.
