With the large maximum aperture, excellent background blur is possible with fast shutter speeds. The aspherical lens element makes the lens compact and corrects spherical aberrations. The image is sharp even at the edges.

Canon's 28mm f1.8 USM is a capable lens that is often relegated to a misunderstood category among most amateur users.
Professionals who use this lens do so for a very specific purpose, a purpose that this lens was designed for, namely low-light, tripod-less, image stabilization free, photography. If you find yourself requiring a lens of this nature, I would recommend it without hesitating to concede that while this optical configuration is perhaps less versatile than a more flexible zoom alternative, indoor photography, especially when this lens is married to a flash pack, will not disappoint.
Outdoor photography, one of the primary reasons for why I purchased this lens, produces (at times) haphazard results, however, most often a consequence of inappropriate use or an ill-advised desire to photograph everything at wide open f-stops. Chromatic aberrations - especially in harsh lighting conditions - will, if you prefer to make use of this lens at the aforesaid apertures, prove to be exceptionally exasperating, if not (unnecessarily) stressful. The obvious response to the aforesaid then, is to stop down this lens to a more appropriate (at the very minimum) 5.6 f-stop, in addition to, when exploiting its exceptional optical quality outdoors, making use of the appropriate lens-hood for additional control.
Accept this lens' limitations and you will be rewarded; forget to observe pragmatic considerations and you will be (unjustifiably) disappointed. Additionally, given the myriad of personal motivators and requirements, the best advice to those looking to invest in any lens, not just the Canon EF 28mm f1.8 USM, is to review what was captured by others. Observing the end results of the experience(s) of third-parties, as they are found on both obvious (and less so) websites all over the internet, is perhaps the most effective method of genuinely ascertaining whether or not a particular lens "fits" your own creative demands.

I purchased this lens as a replacement for the wide side of the Tamron 28-75, after I sold the Tamron. Not only did I want to replicate that wide focal length, I wanted something faster indoors for winter shots of my kids, but I do not need L glass for snapshots around the house.
I was very disappointed in the performance of this lens when shooting wide open. It was better at 2.2 and 2.8, but by the time I got to a reasonable level of sharpness, it was no faster than the 28mm 2.8, which sells for less than half the price of this lens.
I ended up returning this lens and getting the Canon 35mm 2.0, and I find the quality of the 35 to be much better than the 28 1.8, and it more closely approximates my 50mm 1.4.
I would not recommend this lens.

It's my first wife angle lens so far. Amazing,I use it for street photography as a 45mm on my crop 550D.. Everything is great about this lens, looks great and big enough to give me that pro look...1.8 amazing but at 2.8 super sharp.ultrasonic all the way fast and quite ....love this lens and I cannot say anything bad about this lens.....must have.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
Works well in situations when discretion is wanted without looking for attention. It's a nice, small lens to carry around and use without the heft and screaming "Look I have a lens!" like when carrying the 24-70 f/2.8 L lens.
Both have their place, but the 1.8 is fast and sharp and a solid build.
It pairs up nicely with an 85 f/1.8 when walking about.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
Purchased this after returning the Sigma 30mm 1.4 (front focus issues twice). This lens is fantastic on the 7D in low lighting, produces great bokeh at f/1.8 and is extremely sharp at 2.2.
It "acts" like a 45mm lens on my cropped sensor which is fantastic for indoor use. Anything more and the space would be too tight.
A hidden feature to this lens is how short the minimum focus distance is. You can get really close to your subject without having to worry about not being able to focus.
I also noticed it doesn't produce light flares as much as other lenses with a wide aperture.

Got this lens yesterday and as soon as i took it out the box i started shooting and I LOVE IT!!! I own a 50 1.4 and that used to be my favorite lens, it still is, but this lens is just a dream come true. The colors are terrific and pictures come out very sharp. I am very satisfied with B&H, ordered on Monday and got my package on Wednesday and i live on the Wescoast. Definitley using B&H for all my camera needs!!!

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
ive been looking for a fast lens which is wide enough on my crop body. there isn't too many options excluding the 24 and 35L. so i settled for this. gotta say great lens overall. very useful in low light and indoors. af is nice and quick, though sometimes it would miss focus perhaps its just my copy. at 1.8 the images arent too shabby, theyre quite nice. bokeh is pleasant at times, sometimes its just so so. the focus ring is nice and dampened, and ftm is always a plus. there is indeed some CA when theres a strong light, that was a bit disappointing.

If you have a cropped sensor, this is the best prime lens for general use without getting the l series. It's my walk around lens and I am always amazed at te sharpness and low light ability.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
I've had a couple of these little lenses, the first one I had I bought new and was sharp at 1.8. The second one I had I bought used and was not sharp until about 2.8 because of some front focus. This new one I bought from B&H is a brilliant little lens, fast, sharp wide open and just a great little lens. The build is about the same as the 85/1.8 and the AF is similar and locks on immediately. I have owned all the fast L-primes up to the 300/2.8IS and would say if it wasn't for the wonky bokeh it renders at times, this lens might be one of the best bang for the buck lenses out there.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
This lens is very soft wide open on my 7D. It was not as sharp as my 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 until I stopped it down to 3.5. The 15-85 is also a fantastic lens and therefore sets a good mark for primes in this range. I returned the 28mm f/1.8 and purchased the 50mm f/1.4, which is surprisingly sharp wide open. Given the very positive reviews of both the 28mm f/1.8 and 50 f/1.4 I was stunned by the night and day difference between the two.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
I haven't had a chance to use this as much as I would like yet, but so far I've had some great results. The bokeh is better than with my 50mm. A little heavier than I expected but not so heavy it's bothersome. It swung forward on my shoulder and hit a door when my dog jumped on me and is doing just fine so it's at least a bit durable!
I took some great sunset photos the other day. If there are any cons to this lens I have not yet had a chance to find them. Love it.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
I bought this lens to use as a normal for my Canon 60D (equivalent to 45mm.) It is light and compact yet feels very solidly built. It balances very well on the 60D and makes the camera feel very compact and usable. There are no moving parts on the exterior of the lens except for the manual focus ring and AF/MF switch. The lens is sharp enough when stopped down but quite soft at f1.8. There is also some color fringing going on wide open. Those weaknesses disappear quickly as you stop down and by 2.8 the lens is very sharp and usable. Still, f1.8 allows you to get shots you wouldn't otherwise be able to obtain with a slower lens. And between shooting at higher ISOs vs lower apertures I prefer to open the aperture up to keep noise down. I chose this lens over the Sigma 30mm 1.4 because the EF28mm can be used on a full frame camera (as a medium wide angle) in addition to the crop cameras. Focus is fast and accurate which is important especially in a 1.8 lens. The front element glass is very close to the end of the metal casing which increases the risk of scratches or smudges. A hood would minimize that risk although I prefer not to use one.

I've been using this for low light snapshots and textures. I'm not impressed at all. Pictures look flat and never "pop". Tried a group photo and it looked like it came out of a cheap point-and-shoot. I feel like the IQ doesn't even approach the nifty fifty. I'm going to sell it back and get the 35mm 2.0. Pretty disappointed.

I've been taking pictures for years, but decided to step up to a DSLR and a prime lens. Received solid advice from Sales rep at B&H and bought this lens. Great for up close portraits with a shallow depth of field (blurred background.) This lense has a very large fixed aperture which lets in lots of light and allows you to take portrait shots in lower light without a flash. Very satisfied with customer service at B&H, and they have good prices. Their product information on line is well done when you are looking for details on what you are buying. Thanks B&H

Bought this as an alternative to spending a lot more on the 24 1.4L or the 35 1.4L and I'm very impressed with it. Fantastic for wedding group shots, good contrast when stopped down a bit, nice bokeh, very sharp. Definitely worth every penny. Quite flarey if you're not careful, lens hood would be a good addition.
