Designed specifically as an ENG/EFP interview microphone. Every day, for local, national and international news reports, the RE50N/D-B gathers the audio for news interviews. The RE50B's custom "mic-within-a-mic" shock mount provides extremely low handling noise for superior sound. A large, built-in Acoustifoam filter keeps wind and P-pop noise to an absolute minimum, indoors or out.
Neodymium, also known as N/DYM or N/D, is a rare-earth element which, when magnetized, is four times more powerful than a normal magnet. Electro-Voice, the developers of N/DYM technology, found that N/D dynamic microphones give equivalent condenser performance without the condenser microphone drawbacks of dead batteries, failing phantom power, or problem operation in high humidity.

As a working journalist in New York City I use this mic several times a day in virtually every environment imaginable and it is yet to disappoint.
The RE50 is a great mic, but the RE50N provides superior audio output; well worth the few extra bucks.
Durable and ergonomic this mic is comfortable to hold and has withstood tons of abuse, yet continues to provide the same audio quality as the day I got it. Many of my fellow reporters, some using the RE50 and others using far more expensive ENG mics have come to me when they missed something and marveled at the high quality of this microphone.
The RE50/N is by far the best microphone I've ever used and has far surpassed my expectations!

Pavarotti couldn't peak this brick. ... would have to boost in post every time. Sure maybe it cuts out background noise. If you are going to hold the mic 3 inches from you mouth and shout it might be ok, but it won't pick up much of anything else.

Comments about Electro-Voice RE50N/D-B - Omni-Directional Handheld Dynamic N/DYM Shock Mounted ENG Microphone (Black):
I don't have a lot of experience with hand held microphones but all I know is that this one records great clear sound while canceling out most background noise. It was recommended to me by a newspaper multi-media journalist and I trust the opinions of people that work in the field day in day out. So, don't believe the one person here that wrote that it's dead.

Needed a rugged yet sensitive microphone for to-camera on location interview and narration purposes. Have only received it, but bang for the buck it lives up to it's reputation.

I bought this Mic to do interviews with lots of background noise. It does a good job. If I could have tested them before my purchase, I would have preferred one that cut out more background noise. It is well made and did a good job though.

Lives up to its reputation. Bulletproof, high quality, good vocal (speech) mic. "N" version has higher output and is worth the few extra dollars. Resistant to wind, rain and snow. Fat barrel makes it easier for talent to hold even with gloves.
Just great!
