Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Fabricated from high-quality CR-39 acrylic, B&W graduated neutral density filters are gray toned in one half of the filter and are smoothly graduated into the clear portion. B&W Graduated Neutral Density filters are available in 2 grades; #501 (approx. 1 stop density at the top) and #502 (approx. 2 stops density at the top).

Often when shooting outdoors the dynamic range exceeds what the camera's sensor is capable of recording. In these cases you'll either blow out the highlights or loose detail in dark areas of a photo. This can be solved using a split neutral density filter. It blocks some of the light from the sky reducing the overall dynamic range of a scene.
With its revolving front element the B & W 502 filter is great for just this purpose and when shooting outdoor I don't leave home without it!
It has great optics it is easy to use and, with a step up ring will mount on most of my lenses (the exception being the Nikon 14-24 mm that doesn't take filters).
IT saves me from hours of post picture taking processing, and from having to exposure bracket every shot.

Good filter, small effect
Filter is good quality, but the effect is minimal and the markings do not align to the effect. When mounted on the camera it's nearly impossible to tell how it's oriented. Sent it back...Read complete review

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray 502 Filter:
Build quality is excellent.
Not functional as described in my opinion.
Impossible to differentiate the clear from shaded half when fixed on lens.
I wish it worked as described unfortunately it does not. Had no positive effect on my pictures and did not do what I expected it to.

A must have for sunsets, sunrise and anytime you need to balance exposure. My only complaint is that I wish it had a marking on the filter ring to indicate the center of the darker half, it is hard to see it in the early morning and late afternoon hours.

Solid construction just feels great in the hand. It screws on and off my Canon 17-55mm lens perfectly.
No noticable degradation in IQ and shows a smooth transition in gradient.

I bought this to bring to Yellowstone, so I haven't had too much opportunity to use it just yet. But the construction and glass quality seem superb on this.

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray 502 Filter:
I am not sure why anothers find this filter useful at all. Only a very small area is at 0.6 and the rest of the gray area was a 0.3 (1 stop). IMO it is hardly enough for sunset photos. I have had other brand before and the 0.6 portion was 1/2 of the area of the gray part, but not 1/2 the distance towards the center. I could hardly tell by looking through the viewfinder how to orient the filter. That is the problem with ordering filters online. You don't get to try it before you buy it.

Easy to see the graduations of the filter, especially with a dot of nail polish on the lens rim for reference.

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray 502 Filter:
Ditto to all the good things said about this filter: well-made, excellent optics, easy to use, and the answer to mid-high contrast problems. Expensive, but well worth the investment.
For those might find that the filter is difficult to orient, I have a solution: the words "Made in Germany" appear on the filter's outer ring surface. The letter "n" in the word "in" is darn close to being at the lens' gradient midpoint. That's where I set the filter and got great results.

Very happy with this graduated nd filter for my landscape shots. It worked as expected which cut out the brightness of the sky and kept the exposure of the foreground area the same.

This filter is terrific, I use it in shooting sunrises and sunsets as it allows you to have detail in the sky whilst good light on the foreground. It is a must in everyones bag. Would recommend it strongly

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray 502 Filter:
Best use for me is to balance out relatively bright skies with foreground early and late in the day. Also adds definition to the sky when overcast or hazy. Achieves same effect as HDR photo editing in many cases. It would be nice if there were marks on the outer ring to help orient the graduated line as it is hard to see while on the camera. I plan to add a couple of dots of nail polish or something to take care of that issue.

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray 502 Filter:
I use this filter to add some depth to otherwise blown-out skys in overcast Fall fishing scenics. I have struggled with this problem for a long time, and this graduated ND filter has helped quite a bit. I wish I had one with a bit more gradient though.
The B&W filter was not the cheapest option, but it fits my equipment profile of professional Canon bodies and L series lenses. It doesn't seem to make sense to cheap it up at this point.
So, the build of the filter is great, the threads match the lenses well, and the glass is superior. Don't go to the cheaper dark side.

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray 502 Filter:
Very well made, useful filter. Nice gradual shading effect that keeps your landscape photos looking natural. Good quality threads on base of filter do not jam easily. Great coatings and high quality glass so I've not noticed any filter induced flairing, distortions etc. This is a great addition to my Canon 17-40L lens for taking stunning landscapes and giving me a better looking sky.

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray 502 Filter:
Bought this grad ND with my ultra wide angle lens for lanscape/scenery shots.
The first thing I noticed after opening up the pretty box is how heavy it is and it feels good, sturdy and well built(as expected from B+W). Its thread is well crafted unlike some of the other plastic thread which will be difficult to unscrew from the lens if you accidentally bang/drop you camera.
I've tried it several times and it does its job beautifully. I love the smooth transition which gives very natural look on the "sky-landscape" shots that i've taken.
Great product, would definitely recommend this to anyone who's looking for a grad ND filter.

Good quality filter. Agree with other reviewers that a mark at the bottom of the filter would be helpful in the field, since it is not always easy to determine the gradient direction.
