Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Fabricated from high-quality CR-39 acrylic, B&W graduated neutral density filters are gray toned in one half of the filter and are smoothly graduated into the clear portion. B&W Graduated Neutral Density filters are available in 2 grades; #501 (approx. 1 stop density at the top) and #502 (approx. 2 stops density at the top).

Often when shooting outdoors the dynamic range exceeds what the camera's sensor is capable of recording. In these cases you'll either blow out the highlights or loose detail in dark areas of a photo. This can be solved using a split neutral density filter. It blocks some of the light from the sky reducing the overall dynamic range of a scene.
With its revolving front element the B & W 502 filter is great for just this purpose and when shooting outdoor I don't leave home without it!
It has great optics it is easy to use and, with a step up ring will mount on most of my lenses (the exception being the Nikon 14-24 mm that doesn't take filters).
IT saves me from hours of post picture taking processing, and from having to exposure bracket every shot.

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray (ND.6) 502 Filter:
I am disappointed in this graduated ND Filter. I should have done more research before purchasing. The filter is at its darkest only at its very periphery. And the transition is very gradual. Therefore, most of the scene has very little filtration. In hindsight, I should have purchased a rectangular filter system such as a Lee system that allows you to slide the filter up and down in front of the lens so that you can position the location of the transition exactly where you want it (e.g., at the horizon). A positionable rectangular filter would also allow you to filter more or less of the scene as required. This is an expensive, quality filter, but not adjustable to individual lighting situations.

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray (ND.6) 502 Filter:
This is a great filter, solid and precise, but the graduated density section is too spread out. Only at the top ~20% do you get the .6 factor (2x), which results in still too much burnout in the remainder of the top 50%.
Once on the lens, it is very difficult to see the position, so this filter needs to be marked (which can be done by the buyer).
There may be specific applications where you need exactly that kind of graduation, but from my own experience, these aren't too common. Which makes this a specialty specialty filter.
Comes in the standard B+W case, which is solid and protects well.

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray (ND.6) 502 Filter:
Seems like a well built filter, except that the ring that secures the glass itself was loose so the glass spun freely. I tightened up the ring after realigning the darkest part of the filter with the B&W mark on the outside of the filter body as it is on my 82mm version. Kind of annoying for a $80 plus filter so it only gets 4 stars...

Looks great and works well but doesn't make as big of an effect as I was hoping. Works well, but is also hard to see the effect when you're screwing it on the lens.

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray (ND.6) 502 Filter:
The graduation from dark to clear is very gradual in this filter. That's a real asset if you're using it on an extreme wide angle lens (as I am), like 17-20mm on a full frame camera. However, it doesn't really get to 2-stop ND until the very top of the filter. That's OK, as long as it works for you and you're aware of it.

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray (ND.6) 502 Filter:
Build quality is excellent.
Not functional as described in my opinion.
Impossible to differentiate the clear from shaded half when fixed on lens.
I wish it worked as described unfortunately it does not. Had no positive effect on my pictures and did not do what I expected it to.

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray (ND.6) 502 Filter:
A must have for sunsets, sunrise and anytime you need to balance exposure. My only complaint is that I wish it had a marking on the filter ring to indicate the center of the darker half, it is hard to see it in the early morning and late afternoon hours.

Solid construction just feels great in the hand. It screws on and off my Canon 17-55mm lens perfectly.
No noticable degradation in IQ and shows a smooth transition in gradient.

I bought this to bring to Yellowstone, so I haven't had too much opportunity to use it just yet. But the construction and glass quality seem superb on this.

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray (ND.6) 502 Filter:
I am not sure why anothers find this filter useful at all. Only a very small area is at 0.6 and the rest of the gray area was a 0.3 (1 stop). IMO it is hardly enough for sunset photos. I have had other brand before and the 0.6 portion was 1/2 of the area of the gray part, but not 1/2 the distance towards the center. I could hardly tell by looking through the viewfinder how to orient the filter. That is the problem with ordering filters online. You don't get to try it before you buy it.

Comments about B+W 77mm Graduated Neutral Density Gray (ND.6) 502 Filter:
Ditto to all the good things said about this filter: well-made, excellent optics, easy to use, and the answer to mid-high contrast problems. Expensive, but well worth the investment.
For those might find that the filter is difficult to orient, I have a solution: the words "Made in Germany" appear on the filter's outer ring surface. The letter "n" in the word "in" is darn close to being at the lens' gradient midpoint. That's where I set the filter and got great results.

Very happy with this graduated nd filter for my landscape shots. It worked as expected which cut out the brightness of the sky and kept the exposure of the foreground area the same.
