Berol China Markers are a lab standard for editing , because they mark on almost any porous or non-porous material without scratching the surface.
They allow you to write on photos without it being permanent.
The wax color rubs off with a soft cloth or tissue. To sharpen simply peel for more marker.

I use china markers to make marks on vinyl records that I later use for sampling. They are a great way to mark grooves so that if you have a stack of records you've listened to, you know exactly where the parts you want to sample are located. Additionally, unless you press extremely hard, it's pretty easy to clean off.
