Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. Hitech Grad ND filters are part clear, part neutral density (available in grades of .3 (1 stop), .6 (2 stops), .9 (3 stops), 1.2 (4 stops)). They allow the transition to be blended into the scene, often imperceptibly. A neutral density .6-to-clear, with a two stop differential, will generally compensate the average bright sky-to-foreground situation and is also the most popular density of the series.
Hitech graduated neutral density filters are available with soft or hard transitions from dark to clear. The soft edge is recommended for wide angle lenses and the hard edge is recommended for normal and longer lenses.
This filter measures 85 x 107mm and fits the Cokin P series holder.
Neutral Density factors:
ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop)
ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops)
ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops)
ND1.2 (exposure adjustment = 4 stops)

I purchased this GND to use for panoramas and other landscape-style photos for my DSLR. I have to say that I am extremely pleased with this filter especially for the price. It fits the Cokin P adapter perfectly and stays securely in place. It's long enough to adjust where the transition line is vertically to perfectly line up with the horizon. The filter itself is very light and scratch resistant. The tonal effect of the filter is spot on and exactly what I was looking for. My only complaint is that the plastic sleeve that it comes in isn't quite enough to protect the filter itself. I would highly recommend purchasing a filter case to hold this and other resin filters. For the price, this is an excellent choice. Of course, it's not as nice as the Singh Ray filters, but for 1/5 of the cost, it most certainly is not bad and is much better quality than the Cokin brand GND filters.

It does what its supposed to do and it does it pretty well...
However, you might want to consider getting the HARD edge especially if you're going for that "HDR look"
the soft edge is more like a subtle change, than a dramatic, noticeable effect... so know what you're looking for before you buy...

I only put 4 stars because the soft plastic bag protector. I use one of my COKIN empty box for storing this filter.
Excellent filter for balancing the harsh burn white background with the foreground main subject.

Landscape shots are the primary use of these filters. I wish they came in a plastic box and not the plastic pouch. But you can always buy the case at B&H.

Better than cokin filters in terms of color cast.
Stack this on top of a 1.2 ND and a .6 hard edge GND and you can do amazing things

This GND has allowed me to get the shots I wanted. Plain and simple.
Best features: Adjustable horizon, smooth transition, and balanced images.
Minor annoyances: Storage. Find a better container to avoid dust and scratches.
It provides a nice, balanced image when the scene has one part brightly lit and the rest is obscured in shadow - such as the reflection of fall leaves along a river bank. It provides a nice, smooth transition when evening out exposure. I've also been able to use it to create hard edge transitions by placing the edge of the filter across the scene, but obviously this only works some of the time.
Use it with a holder or by hand (for quick shots)
All in all, good filter and a good value. I chose this filter over the Cokin version because I've read in many reviews the Cokin version gives images a magenta cast, so be warned.

This is a very good filter for the price. It doesn't appear to add any color bias. It works very nicely for sunsets and other horizon shots. 3 stops (0.9) works pretty well -- keeping the foreground bright enough while the sky isn't one huge blown highlight.
I use it with a copy of a Cokin P filter holder with just one slot so it doesn't vignette on my Tokina 12-24mm.
The sleeve it comes in may not hold up with a lot of use.
The filter is resin (plastic) and not glass. While it's likely that Singh Ray and Lee filters may be somewhat better optically, they are also priced significantly higher.

This 3-stop soft grad is what comprises the essential graduated nd set of 2- and 3- stop soft and hard filters. Image quality is better than the comparable Cokin filters and the price much cheaper than the Lee's or Singh-Ray's. Would definitely buy this again.

This filter is a great use in landscape photography to help controlling situations with a high contrast latitude.
Hitech filters are as good as other expensive filters and i didn´t notice at this point any colour cast
