Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. Hitech Grad ND filters are part clear, part neutral density (available in grades of .3 (1 stop), .6 (2 stops), .9 (3 stops), 1.2 (4 stops)). They allow the transition to be blended into the scene, often imperceptibly. A neutral density .6-to-clear, with a two stop differential, will generally compensate the average bright sky-to-foreground situation and is also the most popular density of the series.
Hitech graduated neutral density filters are available with soft or hard transitions from dark to clear. The soft edge is recommended for wide angle lenses and the hard edge is recommended for normal and longer lenses.
This filter measures 85 x 107mm and fits the Cokin P series holder.
Neutral Density factors:
ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop)
ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops)
ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops)
ND1.2 (exposure adjustment = 4 stops)

Comments about Hitech 85mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 1.2 Resin Filter - Soft Edge - for Cokin P:
I was looking for a more affordable but high quality four stop graduated ND filter that would fit a Cokin P holder.. I had bought another well known and much more expensive brand in the past but still needed a four stop filter. In an effort to save money I tried the Hitech brand and have been very satisfied. I was concerned that this filter was shorter than the brand I had been buying but this has not proven to be an issue. This is a great filter at a very affordable price.

Comments about Hitech 85mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 1.2 Resin Filter - Soft Edge - for Cokin P:
I purchased this filter to replace a broken singh-ray ND grad, which are pretty much the standard in ND grads. The singh-rays are way expensive for what they are (a piece of plastic) so I thought I would try out the Hitechs to save some cash. It seems to be as neutral as the singh-ray and just as high quality. They are a bit shorter than other p-series size filters, but this has not turned out to be a problem for me, and I am using them on 77mm filter-thread lenses. If you need a high quality set of ND grads you should check these out.

Comments about Hitech 85mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 1.2 Resin Filter - Soft Edge - for Cokin P:
The filter is good for clean skies, if its overcast or there are clouds ,a magenta/reddish cast is present on the images.. The intensity of this depends on the filter.. My first one had deep cast so got it returned.. The replacement is far better.. so watch out..

Comments about Hitech 85mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 1.2 Resin Filter - Soft Edge - for Cokin P:
It does the job well compared to cokin filters.. I got a filter that had this magenta/reddish cast on cloudy/white skies days...So I replaced and the new one had considerably lesser color cast...you need to live with it.. On clear sky days the filter works like a charm , no color cast whatsoever.. Enjoying the new filter.

I have a full set of these filters for my Cokin P filter holder. I like these more than the Cokin filters, yet they're smaller than the Lee filters. So, they're easier to carry in a smaller pouch.

I use this product in the hazy skies of Washington, DC which are often. The fine quality of the filter and the 4 stops of darkness are great for dakening the skies and maintianing good optics. Best for use when clouds are visible. Definitely worth the money.

A few things to be careful when handling, it is plastic and it will scratch easier than glass, it is thin enough and it might be stacked up with other filters.

This filter is a great use in landscape photography to help controlling situations with a high contrast latitude.
Hitech filters are as good as other expensive filters and i didn´t notice at this point any colour cast.

Comments about Hitech 85mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 1.2 Resin Filter - Soft Edge - for Cokin P:
Actually, I have only used it a little bit so far, but it most likely will be a key player in my filter collection. I say that because I already have the Hitech soft ND graduated 0.9 filter and it has been my favorite. I love the effect so much, that I wanted just a little more, so went for the 1.2.
This filter is a great way to bring the sky and clouds back into the photo when they would have otherwise been blown out. I have noticed a slight degradation in image quality, and sometimes a little flare, but the upside easily cancels that out. Over and over again the 0.9 filter (and now hopefully the 1.2) has done the job...the sky is so important!
At first I was using the Cokin brand graduated ND, and as you may see from other reviews, there is a tendency towards purple discoloration, its not really neutral (the Cokin). The hitech is better in that department. However, with either brand, the effect will amaze, especially once you learn the best conditions for it.
This is even better than a circular polarizer to bring in the clouds and sky.

Comments about Hitech 85mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 1.2 Resin Filter - Soft Edge - for Cokin P:
I love this filter. Last week in Big Sur I used it every day for landscape / seascape shots. The sun was shining brightly the entire week, and without this (and another 0.6 filter attached) I never could've got the shots I did - would've had to shoot twice and blend in post.
One suggestion - go with this or a 0.9, whether Hard Edge or Soft. I find the 0.6 (1/3 stop) insufficient for bright sunlight. Many shots I used both together.
Another suggestion: try using Live View if your cam has it. It can make positioning the filter much easier, provided you're working off a tripod. You are using your tripod aren't you?!

This is a lifesaver in bright sunlight - it's too strong for anything other than a bright, sunny day or sunrise/sunset, but it's perfect at that. Also big enough you can use it as a straight ND 1.2 if you adjust it properly.
