Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. Hitech Grad ND filters are part clear, part neutral density (available in grades of .3 (1 stop), .6 (2 stops), .9 (3 stops), 1.2 (4 stops)). They allow the transition to be blended into the scene, often imperceptibly. A neutral density .6-to-clear, with a two stop differential, will generally compensate the average bright sky-to-foreground situation and is also the most popular density of the series.
Hitech graduated neutral density filters are available with soft or hard transitions from dark to clear. The soft edge is recommended for wide angle lenses and the hard edge is recommended for normal and longer lenses.
This filter measures 85 x 107mm and fits the Cokin P series holder.
Neutral Density factors:
ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop)
ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops)
ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops)
ND1.2 (exposure adjustment = 4 stops)

Comments about Hitech 85mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.9 Resin Filter - Hard Edge - for Cokin P:
I have only used this filter stacked with another hitech 3 stop ND. There was a color cast, and all the reviews said there would be one. I don't recall if I was able to correct the white balance; I don't think I liked the shots. I'm looking forward to getting to use it when I have more free time. It does what it says it does.

I use this filter to balance the light when photographing landscapes where the light balance between sky and land is extreme. It works great...no color cast at all!

Comments about Hitech 85mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.9 Resin Filter - Hard Edge - for Cokin P:
Due to the hard edge, it is easy to see the effect through the viewfinder. This filter really helps enhance the sky and brings out detail that otherwise might be blown out. Also have used it to make the dusk sky look very dramatic on my photos.

Comments about Hitech 85mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.9 Resin Filter - Hard Edge - for Cokin P:
I purchased this filter to replace a broken singh-ray ND grad, which are pretty much the standard in ND grads. The singh-rays are way expensive for what they are (a piece of plastic) so I thought I would try out the Hitechs to save some cash. It seems to be as neutral as the singh-ray and just as high quality. They are a bit shorter than other p-series size filters, but this has not turned out to be a problem for me, and I am using them on 77mm filter-thread lenses. If you need a high quality set of ND grads you should check these out.

This product is great! Its not as expensive as the Lee or SinghRay and you essentially get the same results. For someone with a low budget, this is definitely your best fit. The filter itself is great. I shoot many panoramic shots with it and I love the filter. Not only should you get this filter but a Cokin P Holder, because it may be a drag to handheld this filter. Its very good for sunrises and sunsets with horizons. Its even good for broad daylight photos. The only problem I would have is that its a bit dark and if your shooting trees you might want to get the Soft Edge instead. This is specifically for shots with a horizon that is straight like the beach or ocean. Besides that, its an amazing filter and I would definitely recommend this to somebody.

This weekend I was out taking some sunrise pictures and I used this filter. Boy it really helped to get detail in areas that was dark and it cut down on the light in the highlighted areas.
