Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The B+W #950 lens hood is rigid and made of black anodized aluminum. It is designed to match the focal length of standard lenses (50mm).

I have one for my M85/M50 and also for my DA35. Very useful, and the right 58mm pinch cap means you can keep the hood on the lens all the time.

Comments about B+W 49mm Screw-In Metal Lens Hood #950:
This wonderful lens hood does its job. I've had no issues with flare while using this hood. I use it with a 50mm Minolta lens. I also use it with a 28mm Minolta lens on an APS-C format camera (42mm equivalent) with no vignetting. I would also like to note that a 58mm Kaiser push-on lens cap fits snugly on the end of this hood for added lens protection.

Perfect simple lens hood. Strong, stays put and it does what it's supposed to do.

Comments about B+W 49mm Screw-In Metal Lens Hood #950:
I use this on my Pentax 40mm DA lens instead of the silly hood that comes with the lens. B+W says it is compatible with a "normal" or 50mm lens but the capture angle of the Pentax 40mm DA is equivalent to 60mm so there are no vignetting issues with that lens.
