Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The B+W #900 Lens Hood is made out of a high-quality matte black rubber and folds down and protects against contrast-reducing, uncontrolled, stray light. It is designed to match the focal length of standard lenses (50mm).

Comments about B+W 49mm Screw-In Folding Rubber Lens Hood #900:
Screws right into the lens or over a filter. It's cheap but definitely is a quality piece. Infinitely more useful than a hard hood that takes up more space. I use this on a 50mm lens on an olympus OM-2n. I have not noticed any vignetting and have noticed a reduction in flare and nasty casts. Also offers some protection!

Provides the protection, yet folds to an easy-to-carry flat piece. Easy to put lens cap on with hood in place. I prefer the rubber hoods for these reasons.

I'm using this with an old Super Takumar Lens mounted to a DSLR for video. I really like these inexpensive rubber hoods. Durable and do the job!

Comments about B+W 49mm Screw-In Folding Rubber Lens Hood #900:
The lens I ordered didn't come with a lens hood...and now I'm thankful because using this product has opened my eyes to the benefits of the rubber hood. It's so much more pleasant to use than the hard plastic hoods I have for my other lenses, and I get the added benefit of a soft shield over the end of my lens. Great product.

Comments about B+W 49mm Screw-In Folding Rubber Lens Hood #900:
I use this with an SMC Pentax-FA 50mm f1.4 lens. It fits well, and has a metal thread also.
It collapses around the lens and is at most the thickness of two filters when collapsed.
I didn't think it would be much for protection but surprisingly it does help, especially when collapsed because it forms a nice rubber ring around one end of the lens that is wider than the lens body itself.
It's also always on the lens and is easier than flipping a rigid cover around and mounting it when you are in a hurry.
I have mine mounted above the UV filter which IMO should allow less stray light to strike the filter as well as give the filter a little more distance between itself and harm. Of course this also makes the lens further from the edge of the hood which means less stray light in general. It is not visible through the lens either.
My only suggestion for improvement would be to make the outer edge of the hood rigid, maybe reinforced with a piece of metal. This part of the hood does not need to be flexible and it would offer some additional protection for the lens.

Use on Pentax DSLR w/ 50mm 1.4 lens used to shoot food photography. Very convenient and folds nicely out of the way to facilitate lens cap removal, etc. Recommended.
