Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The B+W #900 lens hood is made out of a high-quality matte black rubber and folds down and protects against contrast-reducing, uncontrolled, stray light. It is designed to match the focal length of standard lenses (50mm).

This is an absolute must have for your EF50 f/1.8. Not only does it prevent glare, it adds much needed weight to this flimsy little lens.
Note: When screwing the hood on or off, make sure the lens is switched to manual focus to prevent stripping the gears in the little micromotor.

My old rubber lens hood cracked and split, and I needed a new one. Lens hoods don't just block stray light they protect the lens from stray fingers, and foreign objects. And this one being made of collapsible rubber, makes storing it in my camera bag a snap. It seems to be made decently enough for the price.

Comments about B+W 52mm Screw-In Folding Rubber Lens Hood #900:
I regularly use this instead of the metal hood that sells with many lenses. Ideal to reduce flare when you shoot against the sun, and also the rubber is lovely to use when you shoot through glass and wish to eliminate reflections. It collapses easier than the metal hoods for storage and the hood is wide enough that I only find it causing vignette at ultra wide focal lengths (and then I simply collapse it to get out of the way).

I bought this for my Nikkor 35mm f/1.8. I didn't like the plastic one that came with it. It would loosen and fall off.
This rubber hood is ideal. It collapses on itself for easy storage. My lens caps works on it perfectly. Bonus that I can put it up against the glass at the zoom, use the flash, and I don't get any reflections.

It protects my 50 macro Canon to be scratched when I leave the camera on a surface and it's an extended protection from lateral light. It's also easy to put filters on and the original cap.

So far this hood has worked great! The fact that it folds down means I can leave it on and still put the lens cap on for easy storage. It also includes a small case to keep it in.

Comments about B+W 52mm Screw-In Folding Rubber Lens Hood #900:
This is a good lens hood to use when space in your bag is at a premium because it folds back on itself, taking up less space than a rigid plastic or metal hood.
However, I think it might not protect the lens as well as a hard hood if the lens got banged on something.

Comments about B+W 52mm Screw-In Folding Rubber Lens Hood #900:
These rubber hoods are much more helpful to me than the plastic ones. This one in particular is fairly sturdy, so it protects my lens from people bumping it and from light if I don't want it in the shot, but because it is rubber I can mold it the way I want.
I also sometimes take photos through windows, and the glare can be an issue, but with the rubber hood I can place the hood right up against the glass and there will be no glare in my pictures because there is no light bouncing off of the glass.

After snapping parts off of a lens with a standard, hard plastic lens hood, this was exactly what I've been looking for. Easy to attach to my camera, I can still use my filters with it. I love it! Protects my camera from stray light AND bumps and bangs.

Was looking for an inexpensive hood for my new macro lens and thought I try the B&W and was pleasantly surprised. The rubber is very pliable, folds up nicely and offers protection. A great buy. I will be using B&W hoods on all my lenses.

Comments about B+W 52mm Screw-In Folding Rubber Lens Hood #900:
I bought the rubber screw on hood because a plastic or metal one could actually damage rather than protect your lens. After reading other reviews, if you were to bump the Canon 50mm lens (or similar) with a hard hood it could snap off the front of the lens (the screw on part or elsewhere). Also this rubber lens folds up and allows you to put the lens cap on. Furthermore, it keeps its shape, unlike other rubber lens caps that I've read reviews on.

A nice lens hood that folds onto itself, making it compact for travel. Because it is a screw-in type, it makes it easy to take the hood off any lens and put it on a different lens in a matter of seconds.

Comments about B+W 52mm Screw-In Folding Rubber Lens Hood #900:
These folding hoods are handy, provide a cushioning collar when retracted, don't get broken, and make it easy to use screw-on caps, which I prefer. The B+W 52mm version could be a bit longer but it does the job as well as the more expensive brands. Remember to use the wider hood for wider angle lenses.
