Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The B+W #900 lens hood is made out of a high-quality matte black rubber and folds down and protects against contrast-reducing, uncontrolled, stray light. It is designed to match the focal length of standard lenses (50mm).

I recently ordered this lens hood and so far haven't had any issues with it. I really like it when I am shooting outside in bright sunlight. In the past I would get glare in my lens or those sun spots that show up on the picture. Now my lens has shade. I like the fact that it folds down and I don't need to remove it to put it in my camera bag. Very simple and easy to use.

Worse than the plastic lens hoods but does its job. I wish it was wider and a bit more sturdy.

Even if you don't use this rubber boot to block bright lights from your photographs, the boot does an excellent job of protecting the end of your lens from banging againsts things. I put this on more as a protective device but have also used it to block the sun and indoor lights that were affecting the angle of view that I was taking a picture from.

Using this on Pana TM900 and FZ100, Vingetts slightly on both with optical stabilizer on. Using the 72mm size with step-up(s). My fix on this will be using short pieces of safety wire drilled into the thick part of the hood and pinch the 4 corners till cured, only need about a 1/4 inch offset to cure.

Comments about B+W 72mm Screw-In Folding Rubber Lens Hood #900:
I give it 4 stars because it vignettes between 18mm and 24mm and there was no mention in the description of this product. Easy to fold when storing and the lens feels protected when handling even when the hood is folded.

This Lens Hood is awesome. You can't go wrong with B+W. I like it because you can put a polarizing filter on the front of the hood.

Living in the Southwest US, I take lots of outdoor shots in bright sun. This lens hood does a fine job, and because it folds out of the way it's easy to use and rarely in the way.

I use this on my 200 2.8 Canon lens. I was tired of using the plastic one and taking it off when I put the lens into camera bag.

This works very well on my 50mm 1.8 with a 72mm step up ring. When the hood is not needed (indoors), it simply folds back. The hood can also be kept on during storage.

This lens hood fit perfectly and does the job so far. Haven't had it for long so don't know about long term durability. It does vignette between 18mm and around 35mm with my 18-200 but I think I will be able to work around that. For the price it's a handy piece of protection and folds out of the way conveniently.
