Have you ever wished that your lens could focus closer than it does? Imagine that you could put a magnifying glass in front of your camera's lens. Close-up lenses are the simplest and least expensive method of achieving close-up photography. B&W close-up lenses are high-quality optical magnifying lenses which shorten the close-focusing capability of your lens. They are available in different "powers" (diopters). A +1 close-up lens will allow you to focus your lens somewhat closer than it already does. A +2 close-up lens will allow you to focus closer than the +1. A +4 lens will allow you to focus even closer than a +2, and so on. These lenses can be used individually or in any combination to achieve ultra-close focus. For example, a +1 combined with a +2 will equal a +3, while a +2 combined with a +4 will equal a +6, etc. The maximum magnification achieved with these attachments will depend on the focal length of your lens as well as the actual close focusing capability of that particular lens. The B&W Macro Close-up Lens, by itself, offers the strongest diopter of +10. When attached to a standard 50mm lens (in 35mm), half lifesize to somewhat larger reproductions are possible. NOTE: The NL10 Close-up lens IS NOT front threaded and is not meant to be used in combination with other close-up lenses.
B&W DIOPTER CHART
NL 0.25 = +.25 diopter with a focal length of 4000mm
NL 0.50 = +.50 diopter with a focal length of 2000mm
NL1 = +1 diopter with a focal length of 1000mm
NL2 = +2 diopter with a focal length of 500mm
NL3 = +3 diopter with a focal length of 333mm
NL4 = +4 diopter with a focal length of 250mm
NL5 = +5 diopter with a focal length of 200mm
NL10 = +10 diopter with a focal length of 100mm

The quality of B&W has always been superb. This is perfect if you do not have a macro lens in your bag or want to occasionally take some macro shots. The price is right and an excellent buy.

I shoot photojournalism, and was thinking to offload some of my lenses I rarely use to save some space in my bag and cut down the weight. I was selling my 60mm macro and thinking to use this macro filter with 50mm.
This filter is weird to use. It requires me to get super close to subject without much flexibility to focus and compose.
I ended up returning this and use my 180mm on my DX camera for close up shots.

Comments about B+W 52mm Macro Close-up +10 (NL10) Lens:
I have been wanting a Macro Lens for a long time, but I haven't purchased one due to the fact that its hard to find one under $500. I bought this filter instead of an actual macro lens, and after playing with it for a while I feel that I don't need an actual macro lens. This filter just screws one the front of your lens and allows you to focus very, very close to the subject. This filter is very powerful, when I put it on my telephoto lens I can get something the size of an ant to take up nearly the whole frame. I haven't noticed any significant loss if image quality, but when using it on a telephoto lens you need to make sure to shoot in aperture priority mode, and have the camera set to f-11 or higher, or the images come out blurry (at least on my camera). The only drawback on this filter is that the autofoucs on your camera (or at least my camera) wont work with the filter attached. to focus this a picture what I have found works best is if you set the camera to manual focus, It doesn't seem to matter where the cameras focus ring is set, then slowly move the camera closer and closer to the subject until it comes into focus, after a little practice you get a feel for how close you need to be. The only other drawback is that this filter is not great in low light without a tripod, or stand alone flash, but if I use a flash, or tripod low light pictures have no real loss in quality. I have gotten some very good pictures with this lens, and if you don't want to spend the money on a real macro lens, then I highly suggest purchasing this filter.

This filter does what it promises and it does not alter really the quality of the pic as far as I can tell. I do not own a macro lens so I don't know how different it is to use them, but I can tell you that I don't feel the need to own a macro lens with this filter at hand :)
On the downside it is really hard to use AF...
