A basic, all-manual SLR combination for students, the FM10 35mm SLR Camera with 35-70mm Lens will help you learn the art of photography the old fashioned way. Load, advance, and rewind the film yourself. Determine exposure manually with just a simple match diode centerweighted meter, and enter the settings on the aperture ring and shutter speed dial. Use any Nikon F-mount lens which has an aperture ring. You'll only need small, long-lasting button batteries for the meter (the shutter is all-mechanical) and some film. The FM10 is a basic camera that's a great teaching instrument and fun, too.

Shooting with this camera forces you to slow down and think.... all controls are manual and you are left to select your brush and mix your paint.
Shooting sport is possible having adjusted for lighting, speed and composure, leaving manual focus and an instantaneous shutter to capture the moment.
However I find this camera really shines shooting outdoor street photography and landscapes in better lighting. Being such a lightweight camera/lens when compared to many DSLR's you can also get away with a lightweight tripod, opening some exciting night photography opportunities without a weight burdon.
Since the shutter is mechanical you don't need to worry about battery life for long exposures. In fact over the eight years I have been using this camera I have never had to change them once!
The stock lens looks cheap and nasty, yes it was cheap but was surprisingly sharper than I had expected and you can take excellent close up shots with the short min shooting distance. My lens however did have a limited life and gained a "nasty" status after about 5 years of general use.
Today I still use this camera for travel and landscapes with a Nikon 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 AF-D fitted most of the time. I would advise to be wary of aftermarket lenses if you are on a budget as you may not get the results you are after. A second hand OEM lens may be the way to go.
The camera has poor sealing against moisture and dust compared to other professional cameras, however I have never felt this to be a problem in use.
The light meter routinely gets negative comments. The only problem I have had is that it can be difficult to meter in varying lighting as there is no spot metering. I find that a separate hand held light meter useful to aid in very low light conditions when approximating exposures eg night photography.
The camera body has had one mechanical failure diagnosed as a shutter jam. This was after only one year of use and just outside the warranty period ;o( After surgery there has been no other issues thankfully and it has worked flawlessly on many remote backcountry travels well away from any repair shop.
I shoot mainly slide film with this camera and routinely get positive comments about photos that have not required any digital retouching. They are great straight from the camera! Many people also enquire about the camera and the classic mechanical click of the shutter turns heads!
If you are on a budget and want to shoot amazing original photos, you can still do that in the 21st century with the Nikon FM10.

The FM10 was my first real camera. Its an excellent student camera with all the features you need and none you don't. It comes with a good lens (although I wish it was a tad faster) and thats what really matters. In fact, even though I have upgraded my entire film collection, I still use this lens often. My main complaints about the camera are its durability and longevity. I have had the camera about 6 years now and it has some significant brassing, to the point that I can't read the serial number. The depth of field preview lever also broke off long ago. I upgraded my film setup to some FM2s, which I like much better, even though they have almost identical features. Bottom line: great student camera, but I would recommend getting a vintage Nikon SLR and a decent 50mm lens instead of this. It would cost about the same and you'll be a lot happier down the road.

Comments about Nikon FM10 35mm SLR Camera with 35-70mm Lens:
Without being redundant, and giving the Nikon FM10 the same glowing praise that other reviewers have already given it, I will make just a single point. I am a photographer by trade, and I make my living with a typical mega-pixel modern marvel. But when the workday is done, when the photography is for my enjoyment and not for anyone else, then I run a roll of traditional black and white film through my all-manual Nikon FM10.
The FM10 is my backpack camera, my pack it in the suitcase and fly off to California for the weekend camera. It is a tool for which I have 100% confidence in. It does exactly what I want it to do without being overly complicated by unnecessary bells, whistles, gimmicks or any of those utterly useless "scene modes" that are built into most of today's cameras.

Comments about Nikon FM10 35mm SLR Camera with 35-70mm Lens:
My family has always been using Nikon's product for over 25 years and never disappointed with any of them. I purchased Nikon FM10 for my dad as a replacement for his old Nikon FM2 which not fully function anymore. We took a first look at the camera when it arrived and found that the body is mostly made out of plastic and feel cheap compare to the classic FM2. The view finder isn't as nice and bright as FM2. We then took it out for a photo shoot and found that this camera isn't all that bad. The button layout is still same as those classic ones. The focusing screen is same (split screen). It makes good picture but lags of the pro built quality and feeling when you hold it in your hand.
In conclusion, this is a great camera and have everything you need from the old FM2 except the pro built quality. If you are serious about film photography I would suggest a bigger models like a Nikon F100 or F6 or even used FM2.

While I enjoy digital photography, I grew up with film photography and still enjoy the challenge it presents over digital. I guess I can still tolerate delayed gratification. There is nothing like opening the developing canister and pulling out the developed film and printing it. Film is deliberate, you have to think and see the image that you are making. The FM10 is a charm to use and is much lighter than my first Nikkormat. It will join my used Nikkormat; FE and FM2n in continuing to make images. Digital is good but film is much better!!!

The FM10, one of the last film camera to be still manufactured, is full of advantages. Its designs makes it resistant to time and water/dust/... but also very practical to use. It produces amazing Black & white photographs, that DSLR can't reproduce. Exposition and focus, while being manual, can be done well thanks to the technology of the FM10. If you can, go for it, it's a reference ! It only needs two small battery cells to work, which is an enormous advantage compared to DSLR that need to be constantly recharged. I use it mainly for photo essays, and portraits (B&W).

It is too bad that that is one of the few manual cameras left in the market. One of the few positives is that it is a manual only camera. There is no better way to learn to shoot film or digital than with an all manual camera. You will know how to meter and make images with the right exposure.

Comments about Nikon FM10 35mm SLR Camera with 35-70mm Lens:
Very easy to use, especially for beginners. The only thing that is a little hard to get used to is the focusing mechanism on the camera. Sometimes the grated glass in the focusing ring doesn't always disappear. I'm not sure if this is part of the camera or a malfunction. Overall though I am very happy with the camera.

The hand book is really step by step and easy to follow. I use it for my photography class, and even the teacher loves it.
The instructions on how to load the film were hard to read and follow. Also, there were no instructions on how to tie the strap onto the camera, which was really frustrating.

Comments about Nikon FM10 35mm SLR Camera with 35-70mm Lens:
This camera was purchased for an Introduction to Photography college class. Easy to use. Disappointed that after two months of use, the shutter suddenly was stuck open. Returned to Nikon (thinking it would be covered under warranty considering the date purchased). Camera neither misused nor abused. Nikon said it will cost about $100 to repair as it is not covered under warranty. Very disappointed with this. Could just purchase a new one. However, I do not plan on purchasing another Nikon product. In the past I've always purchased Fuji cameras and may return to that manufacturer. My Fujuica camera lasted over 20years before it quit.

Comments about Nikon FM10 35mm SLR Camera with 35-70mm Lens:
This camera is a great manual camera! I started from a Nikon D40, D200, D5000 and I just changed my course and tried a film camera. You will learn to do everything from loading film, metering light, setting shutter speed and aperture, focusing, advancing film, etc. It is fun actually. I feel like I learn more about some important parts of photography.
Anyway, this camera has some limitation that you should aware of. First, the metering is center weight only so you have to learn some basic things about how to meter it right. Second, although the viewfinder is so big comparing to most of crop sensor digital camera today, it is not that bright and it shows only 92% of what you will get. And lastly it is a very basic manual film camera so not for moving subjects, obviously.

A great way to fall in love with photography...
The Nikon FM10 is an amazing camera for people who want to discover the magic of film photography and it also works great for experienced photographers.
Picture quality is amazing and the "vintage" body of the camera is a great plus.
