Ilford Multigrade Gelatin Filter Set 3.5 x 3.5"

Contrast control with multigrade and variable contrast black & white photographic papers can be achieved in several ways. One of the most widely used ways is through the use multigrade or variable contrast hand filters.

A magenta filter absorbs green light and transmits blue;
A yellow filter absorbs blue light and transmits green.
In this way, high and low contrast images can be made.

Ilford produces twelve Multigrade filters that are numbered 00 - 5 in 1/2 steps, with the lowest filter number corresponding to the softest contrast.

Filters are available in sets of filters 3-1/2 x 3-1/2" (8.9 x 8.9cm) and 6 x 6" (15.2 x 15.2cm ). They can be used above or below the lens and can be cut to fit the enlarger filter drawer.

Filter sizes 12 x 12" (30 x 30cm ) are available to special order. .

Multigrade filters are very easy to use: no complicated calculations are needed when changing from one filter to another. The exposure time for filters 00 - 31/2 is the same; that for filters 4 - 5 is double.

Very simple to work with and easy to keep organised with each filter labeled. These fit my Kaiser 35mm and Bessler medium and large format enlargers perfectly without a need to be cut smaller.

Just try to keep the enlarger on for the minimum possible time while the filter is in as these do tend to fade quite quickly if exposed for extended periods. For this reason I very much prefer the old Kodak Polymax filter system that attaches below the lens as they cost about about the same. Unfortunately these aren't available any longer and your only other alternative is the much more expensive Ilford set that attaches below the lens.

If you only print occasionally and want to keep cost down. Get this set. If you spend extended periods in the darkroom and want your gear to last for years, get the more expensive Ilford set. You'll be saving in the long run.

Comments about Ilford Multigrade Filter Set 3.5x3.5":

These filers are great and I get good results with the multigrade paper. The only problem that I've had is the box they come in and the folder style that holds them isn't very steady, and when it opened in my bag a lot of the filters got scratched and I can't get the scratches off.

First time students of black and white photography are able to compensate for poor exposure using these filters. A greater black to white contrast is visibly noticeable

These filters are just what I needed to print my negatives on multi-grade papers. The box these come in and the white number labels on the filters add to the ease in organizing and using the filters. The only downside is, as with most filters I've used, they are easily prone to gathering fuzz, dust, and scratches which can show up on the prints.

I use these filters to adjust the contrast of my prints. They range from #00 to #5, with #00 being the lowest contrast and #5 being the most contrast. For best results, I always start printing with a #2 filter (neutral) and then make adjustments from there. These filters are perfect for a small enlarger such as a Beseler Cadet II (like mine). I highly recommend this product!

Comments about Ilford Multigrade Filter Set 3.5x3.5":
