Ilford Multigrade Gelatin Filter Set 6 x 6"

Contrast control with multigrade and variable contrast black & white photographic papers can be achieved in several ways. One of the most widely used ways is through the use multigrade or variable contrast hand filters.

A magenta filter absorbs green light and transmits blue;
A yellow filter absorbs blue light and transmits green.
In this way, high and low contrast images can be made.

Ilford produces twelve multigrade filters that are numbered 00 - 5 in 1/2 steps, with the lowest filter number corresponding to the softest contrast.

Filters are available in sets of filters 3-1/2 x 3-1/2" (8.9 x 8.9cm) and 6 x 6" (15.2 x 15.2cm ). They can be used above or below the lens and can be cut to fit the enlarger filter drawer.

Filter sizes 12 x 12" (30 x 30cm ) are available to special order. .

Multigrade filters are very easy to use: no complicated calculations are needed when changing from one filter to another. The exposure time for filters 00 - 31/2 is the same; that for filters 4 - 5 is double.

      Comments about Ilford Multigrade Filter Set - 6x6":

      These filters allowed me to really increase the contrast in my images and help add certain 'greys' to the image that really created a great image. Definitely helped in the darkroom.

      Good Luck!

          Comments about Ilford Multigrade Filter Set - 6x6":

          This product is very important for any development of pictures. The use of the filters, changes the contrast of the negatives of the pictures that were taken, by applying it to a machine that allows the development of pictures to take place. The only problem is that the filter may not fit in the panel its suppose to be inserted in, so cutting it may take place so that you can get a perfect fit. I had to cut a centimeter off one side of the filter. As for everything else, the filter is just perfect.

          Comments about Ilford Multigrade Filter Set - 6x6":

          Previously I had used the smaller Multigrade filter set that fits under the enlarger lens, however the universal filter holder that holds the filters below the lens is not ideal - it wobbles and falls off all too easily. (If you think about it, it can't be much better as it has to be usable with all, or the majority of, enlargers). Plus the fact that the image from the negative shines through the filters which are almost certainly not optically perfect. Enter the 6x6 filters. These fit between the condenser and negative carrier in the color filter draw and so avoid the problems associated with the under-the-lens set. Thus, if your enlarger has a color filter draw go for the 6x6 filters, otherwise you have no alternative but to use the less user friendly under-the-lens set.
          My enlarger (Beseler 23C II) takes a 5.5 inch square filter which meant cutting 0.5 inches off two sides of each filter, but this is easy enough to do. My advice is to cut a piece of card of exactly the right size, check its fit in the enlarger, then use it as a template to cut the 6x6 filters down to size.

            These filters are perfect for controlling image contrast by filtering the light before it passes through a negative, instead of using smaller filters under an enlarger lens.
