Circular Polarizer - Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.
Multicoated to minimize reflection at the filter surfaces which reduces flare and ghosting.
NOTE: Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras (They will also work on manual systems and video cameras without problems). Linear polarizers are used with most video and manual focus photo cameras. They are not recommended for auto-focus SLR cameras.

Comments about Hoya 52mm Circular Polarizer (HMC) Multi-Coated Glass Filter:
I already owned a 49mm Hoya Linear polarizing filter for use with my manual focus lenses. Bought this one for use with some of my newer AF lenses. Experience with brand, favorable reviews and pricing influenced product selection.
Both filters are rugged and do precisely what they are supposed to do.

This filter is well made and works very well. Is difficult to clean though, found using a celestron lens pen works best..

I bought this to use with my newly purchased D5100. It is well made and was reasonably priced for a multi-coated filter. I haven't used it too much yet but so far I have been happy with it.

This filter performs as described, removing glare - I purchased it for a trip which involved water shots, and found it to perform just fine.
