Circular Polarizer - Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.
Multicoated to minimize reflection at the filter surfaces which reduces flare and ghosting.
NOTE: Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras (They will also work on manual systems and video cameras without problems).

Use this with my 17-40 L, very nice mount on it, and you can put the lens cap on over it as well (which is important to me, don't like having to take filters off before putting on the cap...). Consequence of that though is that vignetting is more strong if used with a full frame sensor. It is sort of hard to clean but I think all CPL's are like that, I use a residual oil remover and it works really great with a microfiber cloth that I always keep handy with me. The circulating ring is not exactly damped but it definitely will not circulate by itself. It circulates smoothly as well.

Great filter, but...
I'm currently based in the Middle East, where the light is intense. This filter does an excellent job of minimizing the light intensity/highlights, and saving me editing time.

Cons: You will get heavy vignetting at wide angles. The construction is a little flimsy. The inner threading came off after about 1 year of heavy use, and I had to replace it.

I use this on my Canon 100-400L, it's great here in Florida where the sun is strong all year. Can adjust to any condition. Don't leave home without it.

Comments about Hoya 77mm Circular Polarizer (HMC) Multi-Coated Glass Filter:
I purchased this filter to replace the less expensive one I originally bought. The difference was amazing. The filter is optically clear to the edges and the pictures were crisp and clean. The cost is not excessive and the filter is worth every cent.

Comments about Hoya 77mm Circular Polarizer (HMC) Multi-Coated Glass Filter:
I am an automotive photographer, and when shooting cars you really need a CPL to cut down the reflections in all he paint. I initially had a cheap polarizing filter but lost it while out on a shoot. So I bought this one because it is multicoated. Right away I could tell the difference. The polarizing effect is more pleasing, and slightly more pronounced. Definitely worth the money. So all in all I'm glad I lost my horrible old filter and upgraded to this guy

Comments about Hoya 77mm Circular Polarizer (HMC) Multi-Coated Glass Filter:
The quality of this filter is good with one substantial caveat; it was designed such that it easily locks onto the lens or filter to which it is attached. I'm talking about seizing up on the filter or lens such that it cannot be removed, even with large locking-grip pliers. I take very good care of my equipment, and am absolutely furious that I've marred the surface of the Canon L-lens to which it is attached. Despite this, the filter will NOT come off. This has happened repeatedly, despite my deliberate efforts to NOT tighten this filter. I can't get the blasted thing off, so that I can use this $1,100 lens to take a picture indoors. Disappointing design!

I just recently purchased the 77mm Circular Polarizer HMC filter for my Canon Rebel to use with my 24-70 f2.8 lens. I used it on a trip to Yellowstone. It worked great! Easy to turn, easy to place on lens. My lens cap fit on fine. Got some beautiful landscape photos.
Glad I bought this filter and would recommend it to anyone.
