Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The lens hood folds down and can remain on the lens permanently because it only lengthens the lens minutely in its collapsed state, requiring hardly any additional space in the gadget bag. It is designed to match the focal length of standard lenses (50mm).

I already own the Canon lens hood for my EF-S 17-55mm 2.8 and bought this one for taking landscape pictures while using a Cokin graduated neutral density filter by hand. Keeps me from scratching it up. I don't use the hood fully extended, I fold it back on itself, otherwise I'll get some vignetting frpm the hood on the wider end of the lens.
Nice to be able to put a smaller rubber lens hood along with several adapter rings on the inside of this for storage in my bag.

Flexible rubber lens hoods are a good alternative to the conventional hard-casing hoods. While you don't gain the potential advantage of lens protection using a rubber hood, they are extremely lightweight, and they collapse easily. This unit is relatively inexpensive, does a good job blocking stray glare, and is perfect as a gobo when shooting against glass. It's practically identical to, and considerably less expensive, than the B+W version. I am concerned that it may not last long under heavy use.

Using this with 15-85 Cannon Lens, I can see it at the wide end, but I expected that. For the price it works for me.

Comments about General Brand 77mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood:
This purchase was made because my Nikon 80-200mm 2.8D lens did not come with a proper lens hood. The one from Nikon was plastic and "goofy" looking.Last year I purchased a flexible rubber hood for a Nikkor 50mm lens and loved it.So I got this one for my big lens. It is firm, and screws easily onto my lens...my polarizing filter fits inside, and my lens cap fits over that...simple,great looking and effective

Comments about General Brand 77mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood:
This lens hood works well on my Canon 70-200 f/2.8. It's shorter than the stock plastic lens hood, but it's as effective. It's collapsible, so it's versatile in different situations, but again it's short....you'll likely keep it extended. For something so inexpensive, it's been a great addition.

It does it's job but the material is not very good quality. If you can afford it use a matte box or a larger lens hood instead.

I purchased the rubber lens hood because of the NBA rule that rubber lens hoods are required on all lens on the court. They are inexpensive, work great..and do the job.

This product works and appears as I expected it to. It fits my Tamron wide angle lens without any trouble. I question the durability as someone else mentioned their hood cracked along the folds; but so far, so good.

Rubber lens shades seem to have fallen out of favor these days, but I really like them. This works fine, vignettes ever so slightly at 17mm on my 7D, so I'd use this with longer lenses.

I used this on my 17-55 Canon lens insted of getting the EW-83J. Big mistake. Spend the cash and get the right equipment for the lens. The rubber is made well, but at wide angle it clipps the view.

Comments about General Brand 77mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood:
I can't express how much i LOVE this hood. I bought it to use with a step-up lens, because I had vignetting with the plastic hood I bought. This one can be pushed back for wide shots and extended for telephoto. I had some vignetting with super-wide shots, but not as bad as with the plastic hood. Great purchase at a great price. I just wish it was a darker black color, but that's a really minor complaint.

I'm very happy with this lens hood. If I had to find one thing wrong with it...it would be I wish it was deeper. It does its job and easy to attach to lens and I really love that it is collapsable.

The good thing about this kind of hood is that you can snap it back very easily and that is a good thing when you have a zoom lens.
