The 72mm Ultraviolet (UV) Filter from B+W is a wise initial investment. It helps protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs.
B+W UV filters are excellent general purpose filters since they will not only protect your front element from airborne contaminants as well as fingerprints but also help you get better images at high altitude and while on the water. Using this filter will diminish the bluish cast caused by the various atmospheric factors, yet, it will not have an effect on the color balance of your shot. No increase in exposure is required.
A UV filter is the best available protection for the front element of your lens. A lens that accidentally gets dropped on its front element while hiking can potentially be saved by purchasing this item. Some people refer to them as "cheap insurance".
Aside from that more-than-significant benefit, UV filters cut through some of the haze in the atmosphere rendering your photos clearer, sharper and more contrasty. For those who enjoy outdoor photography, especially distant vistas, a UV filter can produce a more distinct image by removing much of the blue tint normally associated with atmospheric haze.
The filter ring is made from brass yielding a stronger product. Brass filter rings are also less prone to jamming. In addition, the seal between the glass and filter ring is exceptionally strong giving the filter added strength and durability. The excellent Schott Glass used in the manufacturing of this filter is legendary and synonymous with the highest standards of filter production. It comes with a solid 10-year warranty.

Very secure screw onto my lens. Always recommend getting some sort of filter protection as it is better to replace a filter than a lens element.

Althought a bit more expensive than other brands, this German made B+W filter is very well built and well worth the little extra cost.

Don't try to blow dust off with your breath because tiny specks of spit will fly out and get on the filter glass and then you have to wipe that off.... Just a tip

Comments about B+W 72mm Ultraviolet (UV) Filter:
I bought this to go on the front of my Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 SSM kit lens on the front of my 24MP Sony A77. I spent a bit more than I normally spend on a UV filter this time because of the higher-than-average resolution sensor being fed through it. It does the job admirably and is clearly an asset to my kit, pun intended.

Purchased this UV filter more as protection during a mountaineering trip and ended up with better photos with this filter in place. Very happy with the landscape shots improved by the deeper sky.

Comments about B+W 72mm Ultraviolet (UV) Filter:
I have now had my 72mm UV filter for a little over a month and have shot upwards of 8 hours of video through it with a Canon XHA1. The Lens is perfect, cleaning has not been a challenge and was one of the reasons I chose this lens over the others. It is not visible (no ring/halo) even at the widest angle available. The front threads gave me the ability to add my white balance cap and was a nice added benefit.

Comments about B+W 72mm Ultraviolet (UV) Filter:
Had one before, 77mm for a 18-200 canon, bought this one for a 17-55 2.8. As someone said before, why buy a 1000U$ lens and put cheap filter in front of it? This glass is very easy to clean. It comes in two sizes of rims, one thick and one thin. Be aware that you can not fix your lens cap on the thin one (or any other filter - there are no threads)

B + W is high quality UV protection for hour expensive lenses. I have one for each of my lenses and for my video cam. These are far superior to the cheap products that many discount stores sell. I would always recommend B + W filters from BH Photo.
