The large front lens group minimizes peripheral darkening, and the diaphragm minimizes flare. Distortion is well corrected, and the internal focusing allows easy use of circular filters such as a polarizer.

A great zoom lens for those with a small bank account. It is small, compact, light weight and a pleasure to use. Takes great sharp photos with excellent contrast and color. You can't do better for the price, especially if you are using a full frame digital camera like the Canon 5D. I use it on my 5D regularly and am very happy with the results. Like all wide angle lenses, if you point it into the sun you get some glare. Recommend purchasing the lens hood. For the price you can't beat it. Canon's USM autofocus system (not all Canon lenses use USM technology) is terrific. It focuses quietly and very fast. This is one of Canon's better inexpensive lenses. You can't go wrong for the price. Manual focus ring takes getting some used to, if you manual focus. 95% of the time most digital/autofocus photographers exclusively use the autofocus feature. Took away 1 star for the location of the manual focus ring. Works great!

This is a delightful lens. It is exceptionally compact,light-weight, versatile (for wide-angle shooters), and at anexcellent price! I've used it for about 5 years as myprimary lens -- the past two on my 5D (making for anawesomely powerful, non-cumbersome documentary unit). Itsoptics are flawless. My only complaint is the manual focusring; but that is ALWAYS my only complaint with Canon zoomlenses: their focus rings are horrible little things. (Meanwhile, their zoom rings are large and ergonomic.) But ifyou don't use manual focus (though you should), you're goingto experience wide-angle bliss with this little gem. All ofmy four-stars reflect five stars minus one for the focusring (but if you're an auto-focuser, you can call it five).
