Ok, this is one you are just going to have to hit Add to Cart and stop thinking about it. I read the many reviews and comparisons of this lens along with the Canon 28mm f/1.8 and Sigma 30mm f/1.4. Lest you think it is a difficult decision and you want to pay more money then stop reading. Otherwise buy this lens you won't regret it.
Sure it is not the best built lens in the lineup, but it would be hard to say after handling it that the 28mm f/1.8 is built any better. Unless you are traveling in the Amazon or repelling down Everest it will hold up just fine.
It is true, the focusing of this lens is loud. In fact the first time I heard it is was almost startlingly loud like something was wrong with it. It emits a higher pitched whining noise than the Canon 50 f/1.8 mkII. You get used to it though, to the point that you don't notice it. Not a deal breaker by any means in my opinion. Despite the loudness and not being a USM motor it focuses just as fast.
On to the optical performance...WOW! I was blown away at how sharp this lens was on my 40D. Sharp edge to edge and to the very tip of the corners. Definitely sharper than my 17-40 f/4L. Colors and contrast are also very good and saturation is high but not overly so. Colors are accurate and allow for plenty of color detail adjustments in software later. The detail, both in color and resolution, is really impressive even wide open at f/2 and just gets even better around f/5.6-f/8. Alot of information is recorded with this lens, a real winner. I would say it is at least as sharp as the Canon 50mm f/1.8II, if not sharper. Both likely exceed the resolution capabilities of your camera, unless maybe if you own a 50D.
It is roughly 56mm on a 1.6x crop body which certainly feels the same as the Canon 50mm f/1.8II on my old Elan 7. You do not have quite the same depth of field as the 50 1.8 because the crop cannot make up for that or simulate that plus the 35 is one stop slower. In all practicality this will serve the normal lens role very well.
Most manufacturer's 50mm lenses are slightly longer than that to allow for better portraits. They often actually measure 54-57mm in the lab, so this lens as 56mm on a 1.6 body more closely approximates a normal prime than the 28 does. The 28 definitely feels a bit wider than a 50mm should. So I feel, based on focal length alone, this lens is the best choice.
Based on this lens's performance compared to the Canon 28's and Sigma 30mm and based on its lower cost, I think this qualifies as a no brainier. So stop reading comparison charts, buy this lens, and go out and shoot.
BTW, the barrel does extend about a centimeter during focusing, but it does not rotate so a screw in polarizer is easy to use. The dedicated focusing ring helps alot compared to the nub on the end of the 50 f/1.8II.

I got this to use as a "normal" lens for my 40d. It is a little slow focusing in low light and the picture quality is just OK. But for the price [...] it serves the purpose. The plastic is cheesy and the focus ring is loose feeling , it's not the "L" but not the price either.

Great for low light and close quarters. Really fun to play with the shallow depth of field. Fantastic for traveling, as it is small and not so "in your face" as larger lenses.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:
I am an amateur - I can't stress that enough! - photographer who bought a DSLR on sale because I have 2 young boys and want professional looking photos of them to look back on in 5, 10, 20 years.
I bought this lens because it was highly recommended from various forums as a great lens for indoor use and portraits. The f/2 aperture setting allows me to get that cool blurred-out background for closeup portraits and also allows me to take great indoor photos of my kids at reasonable shutter speeds.
If you hate flash photography indoors, this is a solid lens that will give you a great chance of snapping those warmer indoor photos without the harsh shadows.
Right now I have my kit lens, a telephoto lens, and this 35mm lens and the 35mm is almost always on my camera. I highly, highly recommend this as an affordable lens for budding amateurs. The other bonus is it's small and lightweight, which means it's a great go-to lens for walks when you don't want to haul a bunch of equipment or a long, heavy lens.
The focusing mechanism on this lens is louder than others I've tried, so be aware of that. Focus is also tricky at open apertures like f/2. If I'm focusing on one of my boys in the foreground then the other one behind him may not be in focus when I snap the picture. However, if you get the focus right the pictures look amazing!
I've tried uploading photo examples but I keep getting an error from the website - sorry!

I dont really like it.
I have compared this with 50mm 1.8
50mm 1.8 is cheaper and it also has better performance.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:
I bought this lens since I found the 50mm f/1.8 too narrow on a crop sensor. I find this lens to give ma a more natural view, and can shoot indoors without having to take 5 steps back.
It is a bit noisy, the "bee buzz" comment was right on, however unless you are shooting wildlife I don't see this as a problem.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:
I have always been a fan of the nifty fifty, but wanted a bit more space around my subjects. The 35mm is definitely a better build quality and otherwise seems quite comparable to the 50mm to me (the 50mm is obviously inexpensive as heck, so I still recommend that as a place to start to all of my non-pro pals).
Pros have complained that it isn't fast enough and that it's noisy, but I'm just a little ol' amateur and those issues have not been concerns for me.

It would have been better to have a USM 1.8 in the product line. But still this is a nice piece of work though it's never been improved since 1990. It gives nice view on my 7D. The 5 blades of Diaphragm is a pitfall. I love the focusing sound , the speed is fine , no concern from my side. Still as others say, it is a good lens but never expect too much.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:
I sold my 28mm f/1.8 to buy this lens based on several friends who also had this lens. I found my copy of the 28mm too soft and all the 35mm f/2s I had played with were WAY sharper.
It's also a nicer focal length for me. The 28mm was a tiny bit too wide. Bokeh and sharpness are awesome.
Autofocus is the older technology and therefore right down slow and noisy. Don't expect to be able to focus efficiently in low-light with this lens on autofocus. For me, this is a welcome return to manual focus. It sure beats having to spend much more for L version!

Great focal length for a cropped sensor. Extremely sharp lens even a f2. Sharper than my Canon 15-85mm. The only downfall is the loud focusing motor, but I can live with it. Lens is a solid performer. I would highly recommend this lens. In some aspects, according to some review websites, it out performs the L-version. Another benefit is it macro capabilties. You can really get close to the subject.

I have a Canon 60D and was looking to upgrade to a full frame sensor. This is a great lens because it performs close to a 50mm in a 1/1.6 sensor and when I get the full frame will be a 35mm lens.
The focusing is a little noisy but I am really starting to love the images I can get out of this lens

I bought this lens for times when I need a small camera setup when travelling and skiing. Coupled with the 5D Mk2 the combination is great. The picture quality is good and the F2 gives lots of light for difficult situations without flash. It is a little difficult to focus manually so I use the auto focus mainly.

For the price this lens is great! I am using it on a 40D and could not be happier. It does sound like a bunch of bees as it focuses (by far the loudest focusing lens I own). I love how close you can get to a subject! You cannot beat the price and quality of this lens!!!

I debated for some time about this lens, the 28mm f/1.8, and the Sigma 30mm f/1.4...but I know I made the right decision the first time I looked through the viewfinder. This brought the feeling of my old film Nikon F2 body with a Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 lens. I know this lens is actually the equivalent of 56mm, but it feels just the same. Shooting wide open rewards with fantastic bokeh. This compact lens feels great on the 60D body. Though not bullet proof, this lens feels more than sturdy enough for serious use. Highly recommended for use on a crop sensor Canon. Also, if I ever upgrade to a full frame body I can use it as a wide angle. A GREAT BARGAIN. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

A great lightweight, fast, sharp lens. Perfect for low light situations or as a walkabout/travel lens. I bought this lens for a wedding and it worked out fantastic.
Build quality is a little weak and it is a little nosiy (lack of USM) but it is a consumer grade lens and you can't expect L quality at this price.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:
I use this lens for advertising photography and get the best quality pictures when exposing at f/8 or f/11. At these settings there is no much difference in image quality when compared to the EF 35mm f/1.4L lens.
One thing I really like about my EF 35mm f/2.0 lens is that I can get as close as 10 inches away from a product and still keep it in perfect focus. One of its drawbacks is supposed to be the noisy autofocus, but that's not a problem to me since I always work with manual focus in studio.

I bought this instead of the 35mm 1.4L lens. In comparison to my 50mm 1.2 this lens is not quite as sharp but does a decent job. Don't expect anything amazing for what you're paying. It's good but not GREAT. A great lens for a beginner.. but not for a pro.
