I have read a number of things about this lens in various reviews. The one thing that is often said is that it is made cheaply. I was surprised at how wrong that idea is.It is very light weight, by design. I think this leads people to think it is cheap. The other common complaint is that it doesn't have image stabilization. But I have to say, what do you expect for [$]. Also, I really don't care. I have used IS lenses before and the only thing they do is give people a sense of overconfidence. Slow yourself down and take a good picture.I gave this review the headline that I did because this lens makes catalog style photography almost a no brainer. I put this lens on and handed it to my wife and then to a neighbor. Both of them were taking really beautiful photos with minimal effort. If you want to have maximum control of your depth of field and very eye pleasing angles this should be the top of your list unless you have the money for the f/1.4. Still, after using this I'm not sure I could come up with a good enough reason to convince myself to buy the 1.4.

I'm gonna average my rating between the 2 lenses that I got. I know that it's a QC issue, but hey, that's what the average star rating is for.The first one has serious front element play, and that makes AF totally unusable (think 9/10 shots out of focus at f/2.8).Returned that one. The 2nd one I got was amazing. On a 600D crop body, sharpness is consistently good from edge to edge. Pentagonal bokeh is not very nice, but the wide aperture allows for custom-shaped bokeh, so not really an issue. The real problem is the almost unusable manual focus ring. Even though this lens doesn't have the front-element play anymore, AF is spotty at wide aperture. Forget about focus-recompose. Your best bet is to use live view, zoom in, then AF.Not the best-built lens out there, but hey, for $ you get high-quality glass. If you're thinking of upgrading from the 18-55 kit lens, besides a longer tele-zoom, this is seriously to be considered. If you're on a tight budget but want to upgrade from kit lens, no reason not to get this one.

I kicked around ordering this lens or the 1.4 lens. I'm glad I made the choice for this one. Hard to beat this lens for the cost.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens:
I am somewhat of an amateur photographer/videographer but after purchasing the Canon 50mm f1.8 II, I felt like a pro! All of my shots spoke with inspiration and robust character. The simplicity of a fixed lens and excellent build quality and magnificent depth of field made the purchase a no brainer. There is only one mis-step, and that is the motor while shooting video... it is a bit loud but I feel the only way to focus in video is manual. so there is no real mis-step at all. They don't call it the Nifty-50 for nothin'!

This lens is so great- its the perfect amount of aperture to get that really close shot, but remember, you can't get too close. The no zoom thing threw me off at first, but this lens is so awesome- you'll get used to it. I went from ordinary pics to some creative photography!

Love the wide opening of this lens. It gives such a nice blurred background. 50mm is a great focal length. I think this prime lens is super close. I do wish it could focus closer than 1.5 feet, though.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens:
I only use this lens occasionally as my 28-135mm is what I call my 'walk-around-lens'. I do use it when I want to shoot close up or want to use the reversing ring with it for really close ups.
I find this lens to be light weight and very sharp.
My only 'wish it were different' would be for it to have IS (image stabilization) which I have really enjoyed on the 28-135. That is the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens:
After reading many reviews on "the" lense to have in your camera bag, I decided on this lense. I was a little skeptical ofcourse because you want to spend your money wisely in this sort of purchases but after recieving the lense I am so impressed and don't regret my purchase in the slightest! The lense itself is very fast even in low lighting and the picture quality is so amazing when compared to the kit lense with the Rebel T2i. Also, this lense takes excellent macro photos and its a solid 50 mm so you don't have to zoom just move exactly where you want and if it does not auto focus you can switch to manual to get your perfect shot! Overall a great lense! My only complaint would be just the noise from the lense as it is auto focusing but if you use manual you don't have this issue.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens:
This is a great lens and I am extremely pleased. I ordered this for my Rebel XT. This is my only lens other than the kit lens. I purchased it mainly to take portraits of my children. It does exactly what I expected and I am very happy I purchased this lens over a more expensive one. As an amateur, it focuses fast and the f/1.8 is more than adequate for my needs. Having a cropped body camera, the focal length is perfect for shooting my kids. Action shots and stills alike have turned out wonderful.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens:
Recently bought a T3i that came with the 18-55mm kit lens. I read a lot of reviews and decided I needed a nifty Fifty. it was well worth it. I use my 50mm now more than the kit lens. the bokeh(background blur) is amazing, and the speed of this thing is awesome. At f/1.8 you won't miss a shot again. This lens is incredibly fast compared to the kit lens. I never knew what I was missing till I bought this. And for around 100 bucks it's a nice addition to your lens collection. It's almost a necessity, almost ever photographer owns a nifty fifty.Be aware when buying this, you will not be able to zoom at all, I own both kit lens, the 18-55mm as well as the 55-250mm telephoto. But out of those, the 50mm is on my camera 90% of the time. The photos are that great! It takes excellent portraits. Some of the more professionals around here may complain about this lens, fair enough. but if your just starting out, and like me, came from a point & shoot to this, you will find this lens more than adequate. I review my shots and see nothing wrong with them, in fact family and friends have asked me to get some prints for them.As for the plastic casing, I don't find it all that bad, after all, aren't most of our cameras made of plastic? I'm not taking photos with it in a warzone, so as long as you treat it properly it will be fine. It's a worthy investment, you'll love the photos you get with it, so buy it now!

I have to agree with the people who think this lens is great. After I got over trying to zoom in or out, it was a breeze to use. The short focal range makes it perfect for portraits. First lens I put on to cover a story.
