I purchased this to make a large, make shift ring light, that could also be reversed and used for dramatic images. Their power, 45 w/s, is more than enough for most applications. They can be used to light up a dark room to give more depth. Punch up the light on your subject, a makeshift hair light, kicker, etc.... The only drawback is the bulbs aren't replaceable. But for the price, you can replace them probably cheaper than buying a replacement bulb. I also wished they would've come with gels, to change the color. Overall, I would say having several on hand if your an on-location photgrapher (journalist, lifestyle portraitist, or an on the go senior shooter), would come in handy in a pinch (using them in a table lamp socket means you don't have to carry extra gear)... Uses are limitless (especially if you have some ND gels on hand).... Highly recommend....

i have three of these now. i don't use them much but they do work well for what i use them for. they are very affordable but two of the three i bought came broken. the test button on the flash didn't work right out of the box. i don't need that function because i am using pocket wizards and the internal slave to fire them but it is a little disheartening knowing that 2 out of 3 came to me broken. if they test button worked i would give these a much better rating for how cheap you can buy them.

    Comments about Smith-Victor 45i Flashlite 45W/s Slave/Master Flash:

My company maufactures Photo Booths. Tried several of these flashes. We put heavy usage on the unit. We require it to go off every 15 seconds for 4 hours. They repeatedly fail as Master flashes using sync cord. Apparently is is a known issue with the sync input on the unit. DO NOT USE if you require similiar usage.

I bought one of these to use as a cheap alternative to more expensive strobe lights to use along with a camera flash I have on a wireless receiver for portraits. It is reliable and very easy to use. So far I can't find anything wrong with it.

      Comments about Smith-Victor 45i Flashlite 45W/s Slave/Master Flash:

I love how these bulbs work and they are good enough for the work I do. However, I wish it had wider angle coverage (at least greater than 90 degree). I compare it with a Canon 580 and it's just about a step weaker, so it's not bad at all for non-mobile projects.

Great flash. Only thing you want to be aware of is that if you screw it into a clamp light, the hot shoe connector cord gets in the way a little bit...ie. its difficult to get the flash into the clamp light while the cord is connected

          Comments about Smith-Victor 45i Flashlite 45W/s Slave/Master Flash:

I use three of these in a simple portrait setup. Triggering is fast and flawless. The light is smooth and even. I haven't timed them with a stopwatch, but I think they recycle in about five seconds or so, which is adequate for my purposes.

Recently, as I was removing one from its box, I made the mistake of dropping it an inch or two onto a coffee table. After the drop, I could hear something inside rattling around. I was able to save the shoot by improvising with a spare flash unit, but ordered a replacement for the broken light ASAP. On inspection, it turns out that the damage to the one I dropped is minor, and should be easily fixable with my trusty soldering iron.

All in all, I'm very happy with this product, and would not hesitate to recommend it.

This Flash really works, I have a Canon 7D and I configured the Flash setting for MANUAL and the other setting was eliminate the PRE-FLASH Firing. And I think that´s all.
I used a desk lamp pointing to the celing to spread the light.
The 7D boddy works wirellesly with this Flash.

So far this has been a great tool in my photo studio. At first I felt it was too bright. It just overshadowed everything I did. Then, I decided to use it for bounced light - works great! I've had no problems so far. I'm looking to experiment with it in other ways (besides bounced). I'm considering buying more for backup and to use together.

I bought three of the flashes to help add light to my environmental portraits without having to spend too much money on a studio like lighting setup. They are very handy, easily screwing into any household socket and firing in sync with my cameras on board flash. They recharge a little slower than I would prefer but for [$] each they are a great addition to my equiptment

Lots of light, good color temp and always powered and ready to go. I use it on light stands and even with C-clamps. It does exactly what it says it will do.

It does not have the fastest recycle time but for the uses I need I do not need a lot of flashes per second.

                    Comments about Smith-Victor 45i Flashlite 45W/s Slave/Master Flash:

My son works as a video production assistant and I have been thinking a lot about posing subjects, after years doing mostly landscape and travel photography. He bought a set of lights, umbrellas and stands at a pawn shop. One of these flashes was among the stuff and I found it fascinating. They give me an inexpensive and effective tool for practicing lighting techniques that have frustrated me for a long time.

I use this as a hairlight, with barndoors meant for my flash unit that happen to fit perfectly. Add a grid or snoot and it's ideal.

It won't get you F16, but it will give you nice enough fill light to lighten a background or throw a bit of light into a dark corner. Worth the cost.

I should have bought one more to screw into table lamp in each room during the holidays. This flash provides lots of light. With flash light filtered by lamp shade and bounced of the ceiling photos look like taken in soft daylight.

Great complement to the underpowered and very harsh built-in flash.

I had to use Manual mode to get the exposure right, while my Panasonic DMZ35 can usually compensate 'on the fly' for smaller slave flash, this one has enough power to seriously overexpose photos.
