Standard eyepieces supplied with Nikon SLR cameras have no corrective value and are for dust protection and for those eyepieces supplied with a rubber coating, designed to lessen scratching of a photographer's eyeglasses.

I've used my F5 and other cameras without the finder eye piece, but it does protect one's face and glasses from getting scratched.

This is the replacement original equipment eyepiece replacement for the F5. It simply threads into the eyepiece threads. The glass disk protects the eyepiece and the rubber ring gives a soft surface to protect eyeglasses. I use this when not using the larger rubber eyecup.

You would never think you would need a spare one but they come in handy If you are use to shooting with one and most of us are, it is one thing you can't do without. It rests your camera comfortably on your face. Without out it shooting can be annoying. It also protects the glass on the camera.
