Good cold tone, clean highlights and thick base are features. Problems are resists bleaching and selenium toning. Other papers have slight warm tone cast, Ilford MG has coolest tone of all. Stiffest base around.

Ilford makes wonderful papers for printing in the darkroom from RC to FB, Warmtone to Neutral. This multigrade FB paper renders wonderful tones and looks great in a frame or mounted on sintra or gatorboard. I've recently been using it to build some sculptures, and have found it very enjoyable to work with. If you like a warmer look, (good for landscapes and some portraits), I would try the warmtone version of this paper, but pay attention to your developer, because the warmtone paper will react differently with different brands of developers.

While other photo paper manufacturers are pulling their silver-gelatin papers off the market, Ilford continues to make one of the best, silver-rich variable contrast papers around. I've used their Multigrade IV black-and-white papers for almost 20 years and will continue to rely on it in the darkroom as long as they make it. It's consistent from one box to the next and the slightly warm blacks with a pure white base provide a wide tonal range for rich prints. It tones well with selenium, sepia or brown toners.

For the past ten years of working with black and white this is my favorite paper to work with. Easy to handle when taken out of box, because of the size you would need some space for it. As with other fiber-based paper, when it's going through the wet-process, it is more flimsy than RC paper, so you would have to handle it differently/carefully than with RC. This paper exhausts chemicals faster, so it's good to check on them right-before or after 10 sheets. When dried, it hardens and curls a little bit, air-dried is best (no heat, it curls the paper more). The blacks and whites are very sharp, and the glossy surface (when dried) helps the blacks stand out even more.

Comments about Ilford Multigrade IV Fiber Based, Variable Contrast Black and White Paper (16 x 20", Glossy, 50 Sheets):

When Kodak Polymax was discontinued, I switched to Ilford IV paper and am enjoying this almost as much as Polymax. In particular I like the fact that the dry down is in the order of only 4%. I think that the D-Max could be higher but I am learning how to adjust my exposures to compensate for this. I find the surface rather delicate and if I am not careful, the surface will separate at the site where my pinch turns the paper. I now do more rocking and less turning and this is now no longer a problem. Overall it is an excellent paper and I am happy to continue using it.

Comments about Ilford Multigrade IV Fiber Based, Variable Contrast Black and White Paper (16 x 20", Glossy, 50 Sheets):

I used this for my medium format college course final and it was wonderful. A great large black and white printing paper. Perfect.
