Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Comments about Nikon HB-11 Bayonet Lens Hood:
I personally prefer the flowered lens hoods, but this is a very solid performer. It isn't so bukly that it's in the way, and can store easily. Because it's not fit to the lens body, if you reverse it to avoid shielding on the lens, it partially covers the modeling light so you typically have to take it off of the lens if you're going to use that part of the metering & AF system.
