I love this head, and I use it every day. I don't think you can do any better for the money! I find it very quick and precise and solid. Once you get used to having precise geared control over you camera's movement, it will be very hard to go back to a 'normal' head.
It holds everything from my 1dsmkIII to my toyo 4x5.
It is a bit more fragile than a normal head though. I dropped my tripod head first onto my first one and the gearing on one movement was damaged. I think a normal head would have taken the battering with more grace.
It is a bit out of balance in portrait orientation, it would be worth getting an 'L' bracket for your camera if you shoot a lot of verts.
The quick release system is not so common and is not replaceable like some other heads. Given that you will probably end up using an L bracket you will be forced to stack up the adaptors :(

I needed a head that could give me precise control on the 3 axes. This is exactly what this head does, and it does it well. However ...
The head won't allow your camera to "look straight up" : one of the buttons hits the central part of the head preventing it to look up more than app 30 degrees.
This wouldn't be so much of a problem if it were easy to mount the camera facing aft on the head, but the mouning plate will only fit one way on the head. The workaround is to unscrew the plate slightly (with a screwdriver or coin), turn it 180 degress, fasten it again, mount the camera back on the head, turn it sideways and up... what a hassle.
Except for this not so clever design, the head works great. I'm pleased with it.

Comments about Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head - Supports 11 lbs (5kg):
This was a second 410 head I've purchased. I've had one since 2004 and have NEVER had a problem with it. I know there is a lot of feedback which is somewhat negative on this head because it doesn't allow for straight up and down shooting, which is definitely true. I don't ever rehire that my heads shoot straight up, or straight down, so this hasn't been a limiting factor for me.
The mechanism for locking the camera to the head is incredibly stable and secure. Something tragically lacking in other heads I've used. When you've got $25,000 worth of camera gear strapped to the head, this becomes INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT. Never had even a hint of slipping with this head.
All in all, this is probably one of the best values going for gear. If you're in the market for a head with both rough and fine controls, this is a great value, and over almost a decade of use has shown it to be an incredibly good return on investment!

Stepping up from an 804RC2 Manfrotto head, this one delivers more fine tune adjustment for macro shooting, and for general shooting. Superior Manfrotto quality and ease of use are also trademarks of this piece.
I mainly use it with my Hasselblad 500C/M and Nikon D3; it holds both firmly and the bigger quick release plate (bigger than plate on 804 head) adds to the overall stability. Highly recommended.

Comments about Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head - Supports 11 lbs (5kg):
A geared head puts all other tripod heads to shame. When you have to have the horizon level or the verticals plumb you simply can't be acurate by any other means. The Manfrotto is smooth through out and the bubble level is on the mark. I do landscape and architectural photography so this was a must have tool for me. You will be glad you own one.

I do mainly work in macro photography, so a friend of mine who is a professional portrait photographer recommended this head with the 055xPROB legs. For macro work the ability to make such minor adjustments is perfect. The quick release knobs also make it very useful for landscapes and portraits. My only complaint is that the head will only tilt back 30 degrees which would make it hard for long time night exposures where the camera needs to be pointed directly up. However paired with the 055xPROB legs the combination makes basically any angle possible.

great tripod head. for the price, hard to beat. I went from an arca-swiss ball head to this. can't imagine going back. great construction. slightly bulky I must say, but that's what you get with all the knobs.
not mandatory for casual users but when I began shooting more architecture and interiors, the ball head didn't offer nearly enough control.

I use this head to shoot architecture, primarily. Having micro adjustments of all three axes is essential.
I love this head because it's very solid and quality. It says it supports 11 pounds but seems like it could easily support more than that. Doesn't shake or wobble, and provides smooth adjustments, with also the ability to move it freely when you need to do so quickly.
I don't really have anything negative to say about this head, except that the screws on mounting plate don't come with a D-ring, meaning you can't use a bottom-mounted strap with it.

I can dial my verticals/horizontals in perfect now. Too much slop trying to be precise with a ball head. The double check quick release lock is great as well.

Comments about Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head - Supports 11 lbs (5kg):
I love this head. Very stable. I use it for long exposure wide angle (up to 200mm) astrophotography on an Astrotrac mount, so any slop in the head would be easily uncovered with elongated stars. Easy to position exactly where I want it and the vibration is limited. The range of motion in one direction or another can be somewhat limiting, but can usually be solved by turning the camera around. I'll be adding a Henjar Photo arca-swiss plate/clamp to replace the stock plate precisely to allow easy reorientation of the the camera.

Comments about Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head - Supports 11 lbs (5kg):
If you want a tripod head for a DSLR that is easy to align precisely, this is it. Heavy-duty and high quality construction. It is large and you should note the specifications before purchasing. It is also much heavier than a ballhead. It is completely useless for movie shooting - you cannot pan or tilt while filming. But if you need pan and tilt functionality, want to set up a shot where precise leveling is child's play and is rock solid - this is an excellent choice.
The spring loaded over-ride to move the head on any of its three axis takes more of an effort than I expected. Fortunately, you only need that to get the head into rough alignment before using the precie controls.
I am not a fan of the quick release plate and prefer the Arca-Swiss style assemblies, plates and lock mechanisms. However, it is high quality and functions in a similar fashion.
This head is not for use with a light tripod. The weight of the head is off-centered. If you were to set it on a flat surface, it falls over. Therefore, the weight of the camera and lens is also off-center from the column. Moving the head from landscape to portrait further exacerbates being off balance.

I bought this to go with my new Manfrotto 055XPROB Aluminum Tripod Legs (Black). This is a macro rig that I have been dreaming of!!! It fully supports the weight of Canon 7D with 100mmf/2.8L with 3 extension tubes and the MTX-24 macro twin flash on the end plus a macro focusing rail. Definitely pushing the 11lb weight limit. I can turn the the center brace on the tripod to angle out to the side fully extended and extend the legs flat and literaly keep this setup millimeters off the ground and feel like the head is holding securely and make micro adjustments with the head and micro focusing adjustments with the focusing rail. Awesome!! Just what I was looking for . Very stable. I wish I could adjust the head beyond 90 degrees as I am using it it would allow me more flexibility for different angeles because the head almost needs to turn upside down to allow for this rig, but more practice will make me more adept at getting quickly to the position I want, not fast enough for flying insects but good for slow moving crawlers where multiple shots increases likelihood that super narrow DOF with extension tubes will turn out.

I bought the 410 Junior Geared Head as I do a lot of real estate photography and needed a head that would be easy to precisely align so as to get perfectly straight lines. The 410 Junior is perfect and does exactly what I need - I would recommend this for anyone who needs precision alighnment, and the built in spirit level is essential.

Don't be fooled by its name, it has nothing to do with junior anything. I attached my Canon 5D MKII and TS-17mm with confidence. It is very sturdy and easy to adjust. You get the best of both world, rapidity if needed and precision with the knobs.
Wish I bought this head earlier.

Comments about Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head - Supports 11 lbs (5kg):
Works well, level is great and movements work well enough. I'm sure there are better three axis heads out there but this one is great for the money. Camera plate works well and fits camera (Canon 5DmkII) well. It would be nice if Manfrotto could standardize on a plate system. I have another head from them which uses a different plate would have been nice to not have to worry about wich plate I had attached to my camera when I grab a tripod and head out the door.
