Comments about Leica M-Handgrip:
Although some Leica users may object (on aesthetic grounds, I suppose) to putting a handgrip on an M-body, this relatively inexpensive yet useful accessory for an otherwise extremely expensive camera is a nice addition in terms of handling what is -- let's be honest -- a pretty small camera. Even with only average-sized hands, I can attest to the fact that the Handgrip-M does make holding and carrying an M7 considerably easier (and more importantly, safer), and prevents the hand-cramping that a lot of Leica users (especially with larger hands) typically report after using an M-series camera after a few hours. It certainly helps with holding the camera during vertical compositions, which I think is one of the main benefits of handgrips, in general. As far as appearance, the color and finish are indistinguishable from the color and finish on an M7, so it looks quite at home when attached to the camera.
The previous reviewer who claimed, rather disparagingly, that this grip is made of plastic is either uninformed or is in possession of an aftermarket handgrip (which, when considering his comment that he purchased a "used copy", may be the case, as there are a number of Chinese-manufactured knockoffs out there). The base of the handgrip is made of metal, and may be the exact same black chrome used on the M7 body, itself (it looks and feels exactly the same, at least). The textured grip area is plastic, to be sure, but it's plenty sturdy (and I can't report the same kind of "squeaking" that the previous reviewer complained of). In summation, it's certainly not "trashy," neither in terms of appearance nor durability.
The mechanism for attaching the handgrip to the bottom of the camera body is the same type of screw mechanism used to keep the bottom camera plate in place, and it's quite sturdy. The inner surface of the handgrip (i.e., the surface that is in contact with the bottom of the camera when attached) is covered in a velvet-like black foam that prevents the bottom plate from being scratched. Although I've not tried, I think you could feasible remove the bottom plate (i.e., to unload/reload a roll of film) without even having to first remove the handgrip, but it only takes a few seconds to remove the handgrip, so it's of little consequence. Leica shooting isn't meant to be fast-paced, so the few extra seconds needed to remove and then replace the handgrip when swapping out film could be considered moments of zen as opposed to needless distraction. Your philosophy may vary.
All in all, a nicely built accessory.

Comments about Leica M-Handgrip:
I never thought grips were important, but after walking around for hours holding the camera on one hand (strap around the wrist) I started thinking of ways to make it easier.
This grip is amazing. It has classic Leica built quality, very sturdy, and makes carrying the camera much more pleasant. I regret not considering this earlier! A very good investment (plus it looks good on the camera (MP)).

Comments about Leica M-Handgrip:
Luckily I only paid [$] for a used copy of the handgrip. It is made of plastic and a complete embarrassment to any Leica M body. The size and weight are nice and provide a good solid grip on my M6 TTL. However, as a result of the positioning of the tripod mount and the fact that it's is made 100% of plastic, it doesn't take much effort to flex the grip and get it to squeak as if you don't have it screwed on all the way. If you're not picky about how a camera feels, you probably aren't using a Leica. If you are, this grip doesn't command much respect of instill capability. It's unfortunate that even the Voigtlander handgrip is all metal and fits the Bessa series more securely than this pitiful offering by what is supposed to be the finest camera manufacturer of all time. The leatherette doesn't even match my M6 TTL but doesn't appear to be the type used on the MP either. I may keep mine since I didn't pay much for it but I'll be sure to remove it from my camera before handing it to anyone who wants to see what a Leica feels like.
