The pop recording industry often prefers selected models of dynamic microphones for pickup of closely-spaced bass drums and bass guitar amplifiers, because the moving system of the dynamic can be designed to handle these high excursions with very high mechanical linearity. The AKG D 112 Microphone is a descendent of AKG's earlier D12 dynamic microphone, and is widely known for its ability to handle high level signals from bass drums and bass guitars in the studio. The microphone has been designed with a low resonance frequency and can handle very high transient signals with virtually unmeasurable distortion; it has an enormous dynamic range with a very high signal/noise ratio and the capacity to input very high sound levels without distorting. High frequency response has been tailored to keep both bass drum and bass guitar clearly distinguishable in the mix. A built-in windscreen makes the D 112 also suitable for high SPL instruments such as the trombone and tuba.

Comments about AKG D 112 Microphone:

Funny story, but the D112 has almost nothing to do with its fabled daddy, the AKG D12. Watch out. This mic needs some serious EQing and processing to sit well in the mix when used on kick drums. Stick with the shure model!

On the plus side, it sounds cool on some guitars I recorded, almost like a ribbon mic!

Comments about AKG D 112 Microphone:

Worth the dollar, personally I prefer this over the Shure Beta Mics, but that could vary based on taste. Only thing I would have liked AKG to include is a better carrying case, soft or hard. Product only comes with foam inside manufacturer's box. There is a cutout for the Mic and mic clip specifically, but it must be stored in manufacturer's box unless you buy your own case.

Comments about AKG D 112 Microphone:

Finding this the perfect mike for bass cabs at low to very high volume. Virtually no ambient bleed from other sound sources. Excellent result miking toms and congas, dejembe, etc. Suggest a good pre-amp and limiter/gate/compressor combo. Comparable to shure beta 52a for miking kick drums. Handles high SPL's really well. Very versatile. Good fat guitar sound, but doesn't quite have the high frequency response of shure SM-57.
