I've been using these for years. If you want a good, simple soft light source, these fit the bill. I usually use one as a key light for interviews, and another as a back light. I like their size and simplicity. Things I don't like: They fall apart. The screws are constantly loosening up. After about a year of traveling, they get pretty bad. Also, the power cord is very stiff. You wouldn't think this would be a big deal, but it is. It's made of the stiffest, cheapest plastic money can buy. Can't coil it decently. Why can't they use the cord Arri uses?

Excellent ligth to use in softboxes/octodomes, it is small, well built and does not get to hot even with a 1000W bulb. For the price of the unit you can't go wrong. The handle set the tilt angle and stay in place once locked (even with a 36x48" softbox). Only one downside the bulbs are a bit pricy.

I've been using these for years, mostly for interview lighting. I usually have 4 of them in my kit, and there are a lot of things I like about them. They're compact, efficient, and versatile. But, there are several things I don't like about them. The biggest problem is that they fall apart. The screws are constantly falling out. Once this happens to the internal screws, plan on replacing the unit--repair is tedious. Another problem--the power cord is extremely stiff and cheap. It has a decent switch, but it's stiff as a board. Who knows why they decided to skimp on this detail, but it makes using the light a little bit awkward. Summary: not perfect, cheaply made, but useful.

The light output from this (when used with an appropriate softbox) is awesome! It does not get too hot, and my camera can "read" the color temperature of this light perfectly. Since I started using this, I no longer have to "color correct" my portraits. I love it! The long shape really does make for great light output.

A great light for the money, lightweight, compact and takes a variety of bulbs from tungsten to florescent and can be easily fitted with softboxes.

I am mostly pleased with this lamp. It works, is well constructed, and does not feel flimsy or cheap. The only thing I don't like about it is that the power switch is on the cord, and the cord has a proprietary connector that attaches to the lamp. This is a shameless attempt at vendor lock-in. It would have been better had they used a standard commodity cord and placed the switch on the lamp itself. Otherwise, I like this lamp. Surprisingly, it does not get very hot when using the 1000 watt bulb.

I have been using strobe flash for the past twenty years. However keeping in touch with the Photoflex advertisements and website I decided to try something new. I had one of the female models that I work with come to my studio and we started shooting. The light balance of the Starlight was amazing and simple to use but complicated delicate photography for the person that views the final product. It comes equipt with a lamp stand housing, all you need is your bulb of choice, and a adapter ring if needed.
I would recommend this product to the novice as well as professional. B&H has the best price (as usual), and the promotion of free bulb kit from Photoflex is worth it's weight in money saving ventures for the studio budget.

I use this product with the Photoflex Octodome. The lighthead is well made, and the addition of handle makes it even more usable than previous models, which I have also used. I love shooting digital with tungsten light, and this is an easy to use, professional-quality unit that works very well. However, do not use it with softboxes designed for strobe. You must use softboxes made with heat-resistant fabric.
