A speed ring is required and not included with this unit. Remember to get the best type of speed ring for the light you are using. If you plan on using it with multiple lights we recommend the adjustable speed ring.
This is a Photoflex SilverDome NXT, Medium Softbox , 24 x 32 x 17" (61 x 81 x 43cm) . Photoflex makes a wide variety of softboxes for use on your strobes or hotlights. LiteDomes and MultiDomes are for use with strobes only. SilverDomes and HalfDomes may also be used with hotlights. All Photoflex softboxes require a Speed Ring Adapter, which must be purchased separately.
Choose a softbox according to the size of your subject. For example, a small or extra small is appropriate for a head-and-shoulders portrait, or a very small still-life such as a paperweight. A medium softbox is good for a half-length portrait of an adult. A large is suitable for a group portrait of 3 - 4 people.
Choose a softbox interior color for the lighting effect you want. White is the most universal, giving the most softening effect. Silver gives a little more punch and crispness. Gold (with the MultiDome only) adds that punch, with a warmer tone.
Note:Provide ample ventilation when using flash heads that have modeling lights. Do not use a modeling light higher than 300 watts with a LiteDome or MultiDome.

With it's neat construction and it's quick to set up design, the Photoflex SilverDome NXT medium softbox is a great lighting defuser.
Made from heat resistant material, I use it with my Lowel Tota lighting system to create great looking pictures everytime.

For being the cheapest light box solution for a TOTA light (although I could wish for cheaper), this lightbox ain't so bad!
I use it as a cheaper alternative to a Kino light for interviews and it works well. Yes, hot. Yes, not a seamless setup. But it works well.
You hear a lot about how hard this is to setup. I actually find it painfully easy. Unfortunately, I think arm strength is fairly key in doing it quickly but it doesn't take brute strength.
All in all, easy peesy.

This product needed to be assembled which at first is one of the "oh know" I wish I hadn't ordered this feeling..but honestly it was very simple to do and the instructions were logical.I also ordered the light adapter for it so it too was easy to put together and the light is beautiful.Hot from the Starlite but those flaps are lovely.Nice touch. Love it.

I use this for lighting interviews and short films. I've set it up several times now but, the more I do it, the quicker I get. Read the directions to find the most efficient way to set it up.
I wouldn't recommend running a high watt bulb in it too long. I use a Lowel Tota with a 750W lamp and it started to smoke after 10 minutes. Luckily I found I only needed to run a 500W lamp so I think that'll help later on.
It does what it is supposed to and seems super durable!

We use these softboxes on 800W Redhead open face lights. They have been generally good but after 4 years of regular use and abuse by students the foil started to flake away on the parts closest to the lamp head. We have since replaced all our softboxes with new ones and have noticed this part of the softbox has a different design now and seems to be more reinforced.
Factoring in their constant use on a very hot open face light, and replacement price it is reasonable to expect them to wear out. Hopefully the newer design lasts longer.
They are tricky to attach to the speed ring when new but once the spars bend a little they are easy to set up and pack down.

Price to performance Photoflex does it again.
If you're used to the softboxes for flash only, expect a MUCH heavier unit. Thicker fabric and vents (open/close-able via velcro). AND the fact that the end of each stay (rod) velcros open for easier assembly and take down.
I have yet to use it very much, so no reliable wear rating at this point. BTW, this fits just fine into the ARRI 750 open face with the speed ring that comes with it (which is made to fit Chimera).

Great buy when compared to the typical soft box we all use. Bought two of these and we're VERY pleased. Will buy two more soon.

I ended up returning this and decided to buy a Rifa light instead because I wanted to use daylight, for a few hundred more than the silver dome + speed ring + halfblue gel. But it is a good softbox.

My old flash-only medium-sized softbox was coming apart at the seams so I replaced it with this so I could also use it for video hotlights. This is a really nice softbox, especially at its price point. I can't see any reason why I'd want anything else. The fabric has a much stronger feel to it than the one that I replaced; it softens the light nicely without spilling out unwanted light; and I've used 700W hotlights in it for hours with no problem at all. For me it's perfect.

I've used many different types of soft boxes over the years. Obviously, one of the best traits of any piece of equipment is durability. Although I think this box will last me a long time, I couldn't help to notice how easy the metal frame detaches from the peg. It's a small detail, but I think it's worth mentioning. Nonetheless, the box is what I expected from a soft box. It's one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest brand.
