Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun. Filter factor is between 2.3 and 2.8 (approx. +1.3 stops).

Linear polarizers are used with most manual focus cameras and are not recommended for auto-focus cameras.

This filter is specific to Cokin's "P" Series filter holder and rotates within the holder.

PLEASE NOTE: All auto-focus and certain manual focus cameras require circular polarizers. Consult your instruction manual.

Comments about Cokin P160 Top/Linear Polarizer Glass Filter:

I decided to try this linear polarizer first, especially since it will be used mostly with older film cameras. Actually, it worked perfectly with my Pentax k20d, and I'm glad I didn't pay twice as much for the circular polarizer. I could see little difference between this polarizer and my MUCH more expensive Rodenstock circular (lists for over $200). Actually, the Cokin obtained a slightly darker sky. I can't comment yet on flare issues, but one shouldn't be pointing a polarizer anywhere near the sun anyway......
Tricky to slide all the way into the holder at first, but rotates freely once it's in. If you use two other filters on the P holder, the next one may contact the polarizer.
Apparently not coated, so I gave it 4 stars.

Comments about Cokin P160 Top/Linear Polarizer Glass Filter:

I like the p-series filters since they're cost-effective. This polarizer lets me intensify the blue color of the sky and to selectively cut out reflections from car windows. You have to get into more extreme lighting than I've encountered to get this thing to contribute to lens flare.

I'm sure there are better polarizers out there, but this one gets the job done without making anything else harder. For the money, it's hard to beat.
