From Neumann, the RSM 191 A-S is a professional stereo shotgun microphone system designed for crucial recording and live sound reinforcement applications. The system consists of the RSM 191 microphone and MTX 191 matrix amplifier. The revolutionary design of the RSM 191 begins with it's dual capsule system. A hypercardioid element and a figure-8 element exist in a short shotgun housing. Together the capsules generate the mid and side signals necessary to achieve either M-S or X-Y style capturing.
The MTX191 matrix amplifier is the control center, output stage and power supply for the microphone. The MTX191 features controls to adjust the width of the stereo image by adjusting the side signal gain. The controls may be used to widen a stereo perspective or create a focused, narrow pick up with exceptional attenuation of residual off-axis noise. The output stage features dual (stereo) 3-pin XLR outputs. The MTX191 is capable of +48 V phantom power via an external source or internal 9-volt battery (8 hours typical).
Neumann's dedication to excellence is apparent in the overall sound quality of the RSM 191 A-S. As a stereo microphone the imaging and detail is reproduced with stunning accuracy in either M-S or X-Y configurations. As a shotgun, the focused pick up pattern provides an off-axis rejection that rivals dedicated shotguns in the same price range. The RSM 191 AS is a formidable choice for film, television, Electronic News Gathering (ENG), orchestra capturing, ambiance capturing and more.
- Stereo and Shotgun Style Capturing
- The RSM 191 AS hosts hypercardioid and figure-8 transducers. Each transducer features it's own output transformers enabling true stereo or shotgun style signal capturing.
- M-S and X-Y Configurations
- The existance of dual capsules allows M-S or X-Y style stereo capturing techniques. Either mode is selected on the MTX 191 Matrix.
- High Directivity
- The outer structer features the acoustic properties necessary to achieve high directivity and rejection at the off-axis and rear sections of the microphone.
- MTX 191 Matrix Amplifier
- The separate power supply, output stage and control center features stereo width adjustment, M-S or X-Y mode switch, dual 3-pin XLR output and more.
- Flexible Powering Options
- The microphone is powered with 2-channels of +48Volt phantom power or 9-volt alkaline for up to 8 hours.
- Low Cut Filter Switch
- A low cut filter eliminates hum, wind and proximity noise below 40Hz, 80Hz and 200Hz.
- -10dB PAD Attenuation
- -10dB attenuation switch provides the added headroom necessary when capturing sources rich in transients and peaks, without distortion.

I use my RSM-191s with my Arri Alexa-Plus digital cinematography camera because there's no point in using the finest camera and lenses (Zeiss Master Primes) if you're going to short change sound. From feature films to documentaries this Neumann microphone won't disappoint, producing amazing audio, even in the most difficult conditions, either as a mono shotgun, or in it's MS mode.
Expensive with a steep learning curve, but worth it. If you can't afford it, rent it.-Robert Tur, Director of Photography
